Decorations, Shrines and Base Designs

$

Hey everyone! My love for designing is thriving and I've been feeling inspired lately and really wanted a place to share some of the things I've been working on. I love making shrines and designs in worlds whether it's big or small, and adding cute little details to them as well. Most of what I do isn't practical and is purely for decoration.

I was originally posting screenshots of my base on this thread:

But I feel as though my style of basing has evolved into something that cannot be categorized as tidy and I wanted to start a different thread that was for bases/worlds more on the ornamental side like mine. Plus I feel far more comfortable and way less anxious being annoying and posting heaps on my own thread than I do spamming someone else's *nervous laugh* ^-^'

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's a few shrines I worked on last month:

Moon Stone Shrine

Don't think I'll ever be able to do the Moon Stone event ever again because I'll never be able to get a pig so perfectly back in that spot like that ahah, worth it.

5e0fcdcc8b19a_MoonstoneShrine.thumb.jpg.bd0e3274f74bee4eb3c13697333eb03a.jpg

Klaus Shrine/Arena

We found every Klaus spawner and plugged them with a firepit except this one, now he only ever spawns here and we fight him on the cobble stone bit to the right. This area doubles as a shrine and a fighting arena, I love it ^-^

Hi to my lovely Wes @Warlockadamm <3

Mandrake Shrine

This may or may not end up being a Year of the Carrat Shrine... We'll see.

That's all I'm going to post for now but I'll probably be posting here quite often so yeh ^-^'

Why i think reworked Woodie is more balanced than we thought at first

$

0

When Woodie's rework initially came out, i thought, like many others, that Woodie was sort of in the overpowered side. Heck, i even made a thread suggesting different ways his transformations could get forced onto people by different actions to sort of make him have more of a downside. But then it hit me, maybe he DOES have downsides, it's just that they're not obvious downsides or highly noticeable like Warly's pickiness, Wes' existence or Wormwood's lack of food heals.

Here's what i mean:

Woodie no longer has much of a downside that affects his human form besides from the doubled treeguard spawn (which many experienced players consider an upside rather) and while this technically makes him "better Wilson with an axe" his rough edges start showing when you start transforming:

  • Every transformation (considering you're using totems) costs 20 health and 15 sanity to boot.
  • cursed Woodie drains sanity at an amount almost comparable to the Tam o Shanter (which restores 6.7 p/m according to wiki) draining -6 p/m.
  • When Woodie ceases to be transformed, he's immediately starving, meaning that even the most prepared of players is bound to take AT LEAST 1-4 starving damage (on top of the native idol damage i mentioned above)
  • Though unlikely, he can't binge eat monster foods in a pinch since that would force him into a random transformation (which tends to be undesirable).
  • Random transformations also occur at a full moon no matter what, though one can prepare and eat a desired idol right before night hits.

This is without taking into account the quirks of each transformation (moose has great power and defense but is slow and can't heal by himself without jellybeans or a Wortox; Goose can't harvest or do anything but run; werebeaver can't collect his farmed items until he's back to human form; whenever Woodie dies he stays transformed, most likely causing starvation at ressurrection) really hones in the point that Woodie's upsides are not without consequences, but rather that his downsides only come as a direct consequence of using his powers. And even if you were to tell me that you would never transform or chop that much and that it makes him just a better Wilson, then what would be the point of playing as him?

What d'yall think

Extra notes:

  • I know insanity isn't a problem to most players, but it can be annoying even for the more experienced players during a boss fight or a farming session, not to mention new players lose their monkeys at insanity.
  • I'm sorry i disrespected Wes, o' Wes worshipers.

On topic "Tips on how to be Courteous to Fellow Players"

Hello fellow Forum Members! Those of you who've been around for a while probably remember this topic made by @MenaAthena:

It was pinned for quite a long time, however, it has been removed some time ago, I guess in the last year at some point.

I really liked the tips Mena gave, they can be the backbone of a healthy and friendly community. I (still) play quite often on public survival servers with random players of every skill level and these tips are still very actual. "Don't ask where the Base is Right After Joining" (a classic, heh :D), "Don't Pick Everything", "Don't Enter in Winter or Summer" or "If you don't want Strangers, set a Password" are some of the most important and relevant ones and my favourites (in fact, there's been a rant on the latter topic on steam lately (again)).

Does anyone know why this topic got un-pinned? Maybe because it got archived? I think it is still worthy of being on the top of the general forums, so that new players can find it as well. Could we get it back in some way?

What DST character are you?

I'm a big fan of Personality quizzes. I know they are dumb but i guess being immerse into the world of whatever the quizz is about feels SO REWARDING. So after some days putting my ideas together, i made this game:

Basically, Its a survival themed game where your actions will determine your personality and finally, what DST character fits your personality the best. I would suggest answering the questions as if it was you trying to survive. The more honest you are the more accurate the quizz will be.

Here are some images of it:

dstgame.thumb.png.b3e4fc651903e42674679b998ba75936.png

dstgame2.thumb.png.01e702a5237f42e1f2a4566b4c8725a0.pngdstgame3.thumb.png.f0d18cce9d1b7acb2fcb151b2455f0c2.png

If you would like to try it out just click on the spoiler tab above and click the link. Let me know what character you got!

Also if you have any suggestions or want to correct my spelling, grammar etc, please do so! I've been doing this for a while so probably my brain messed up at some point.

Disclaimer: i do not own any of the images i literally just googled stuff and used them. Some of them have their watermarks others don't so im sorry for that. The results in the quizz may vary so don't take this serious, it is just a game made by someone who plays this game for others who play this game too. I'm not a psychologist or anything of the kind lol. This game was made just for fun so i hope you enjoy it~ :p

What's your thoughts about Warly?

$

I'm curious about where Warly stands. He was the first character I've ever played as and I still love him. Then Wurt joined the cast and I've really only played as her. I decided to play Warly again and I've noticed something rather lackluster.

That's his hunger, I'm probably just super rusty, but I've notice more of a punishment playing as him and dealing with his hunger than other characters besides Wes. On paper, that makes sense since he does have 250 hunger from the start along with a crockpot that you can move. But, I dunno, him not being able to eat regular cooked food or at least having a favorite food on top of him being less satisfied with the same food with a 20% faster hunger drain is big downer. Again, I'm probably playing him wrong, I have been getting rather unlucky with world spawns with him, I haven't been trying to eat the same foods, but I've unfortunately been stuck in bad situations where I'm needed to at least eat the same food.

However, I absolutely do love his seasoning ability. That's the thing that drew me in to playing as Warly. Just the idea of being a support character for those who needs it and having more of a repertoire when it comes to cooking.

Maybe I'm just bad with him, but I absolutely have no idea on where he stands. What do you all think?

Optimal plant rotation

I've done a bit of digging. Considering rushing for a Empty Bottle early in the game is a bit hard (need loads of board for a boat and time to venture into the sea), I think plants that *produces* Growth Formula nutrient is most preferable in early-mid game. This illustrated table lists plants in ascending order based on their Growth Formula production, and when that is equal, the need for Compost then Manure. Note that to get huge harvests, you also need to keep your farm clean of junk and weed, and keep at least 3 of the same type in a tile (according to the wiki, anyway). I might dig into the .lua to check later.

latest-screenshot.thumb.png.7fd6293eff9cf78ba55479148914f34d.png

Now, you can see Garlic is available all year around, and provides growth formula quite well. In any way, avoid Carrot since it isn't really worth it (well, unless you are doing random seeds).

Now the same data ordered according to Seasonal Availability, sorted from Autumn through Winter until Summer.

Farming 101 - Grow Like Never Before

$
0
0

You know I've never really written many guides to apologies before hand, but let's just dive right into it!
Due Note: This is based on my experience and not code. Data-divers may correct or tweak what is stated here!

How to Get Started - Basics

Farmplots are no more! First thing you need to make is a Garden Rigamajig for 3 Boards, 2 Rope, & 2 Flint found in the Food Tab. This object can be placed along a grid to create a spot of farmland after a couple of seconds. It has 4 uses, and each square can hold 9 crops. Make sure to dig up any Garden Debris with a shovel to make room.

BJfknc4.jpg

Next you're going to need a Hoe (or several) for 2 Twigs & 2 Flint from in the Food Tab. Each Hoe has 25 uses, and is used for creating spots for planting seeds on your existing farmland. Both mechanics play out very much like they did in the Gorge.

Take this time to also craft a Watering Can for 2 Boards & 1 Rope in the Food Tab. This will be used later to water an entire farmland tile.

Knowing Your Plants - Research

If you've already researched the plants or are using the (not yet updated) wiki, you can skip this step. Otherwise go ahead and craft yourself a Gardeneer Hat for a Bucket of Poop, 3 Seeds, & an Electric Doodad. This hat has no durability and is primarily used to view and update your "Plant Registry" much like the recipe book. The hat has two primary functions:

  • Research - With the hat equipped, you can research a crop's current stage. There are 5 basic stages: Seed, Sprout, Small, Medium, & Grown, as well as 2 hidden stages: Giant & Rotting. You only need the basic stages to unlock information on the crop.
Due Note - You can only get the Seed stage from specific seeds. Normal seeds will grow into a random Sprout.
  • Inspect - After a plant has been Tended (will be discussed later) you will be given the option to Inspect. This will prompt your character to comment on the current status of the plant. If there is something making the plant unhappy, it will be said here. Otherwise they will state the plant is doing well. This is what we're aiming for!

There are three main components to a plants needs as seen in the Plant Registry: Season, Water Consumption, Nutrients.

  • Season - Self explanatory, the best season for the plant to grow happy.
  • Water Consumption - Self explanatory, the level of moisture a plant needs to grow happy.
  • Nutrients - There are three types of Nutrients: Manure, Compost, & Growth Formula. Different plants will consume as well as produce nutrients. This is the most important detail to understand, as it'll form the basis of what plants you pair together when farming. Nutrients are visible while looking at a farmland tile, but are made much easier to discern with the Premier Gardeneer Hat from the Ancients Tab.

HdQKNHn.jpg

Beyond these three there are three others:

  • Happiness - Talking to a plant (right-click), or playing music to it (via Conch, Flute, Band, or a new item) will satisfy a plants' happiness. You need to tend to your plants once per growth stage.
  • Family - Plants will need to be next to (4) plants of the same kind to meet this criteria. Keep this in mind when planting.
  • Killjoys - Plants must NOT be next to any "Killjoys" also known as Weeds. There are 4 different kinds of weeds: Fire Nettles, Forget-Me-Lots, Spiny Bindweed, and Tillweed. Make sure to keep these out of your garden (or at least seperated)!

The Actual Process - Farming

The example listed is OUTDATED. The logic stands, but the nutrient consumption/production rates of the plants have changed.

Let's start with a simple example: Onion & Pepper. Onion & Pepper are both able to be grown in Autumn, and have directly opposite Nutrient usage, and rate. (One consumes Manure at a rate of 3, while producing Growth Formula at a rate of 3 while the other consumes Growth Formula at a rate of 3 while producing Manure at a rate of 3.)

YYY8Fiu.jpgsM3QBc6.jpg

Essentially, so long as you have an equal amount of onions to peppers within a single plot the crops will maintain the nutrients themselves.

W3JyDUh.jpg

As you can see here, within each tile I use 8/9 of the spots with an equal distribution of Onion & Pepper. Plus I try to make sure that each crop is next a couple of their own (4) to hit that Family criteria. So long as these are being grown in Autumn all I need to worry about is Watering & Happiness—and possibly weeds due to the unused spots.

What's The Next Step?

Not all crops have a convenient opposite, and even if they do you may end up wasting space to maintain the nutrients. The trick is finding what plant combinations work for the best result. You don't need a perfect ratio, but then you'll have to periodically Fertilize the plot which is an added step you can avoid with some proper planning.

Fertilizer

Fertilizer can be used to instantly add a specific type (or types) of Nutrients to your plots. To my understanding, each plot tile starts with a random amount between 20 to 40 of each nutrient and can hold a total of 100. This means you are allowed to use crop combinations that result in a net loss, so long as there's enough nutrients for the growing stages (sprout, small, medium). Just make sure you bring the nutrients back up with Fertilizer before planting your next batch!

F&Q

How do I get Giant Crops?
As far as I can tell, if you meet all the plants needs (& don't let it drop) you are guaranteed a Giant Crop (running out of nutrients ruins this)!
Tip - Make sure to pre-water & pre-fertilize (if the soil is off) before planting the seeds. This way you don't stress the plants out while planting.

What's the deal with Fruitflys?
After 35 days the Lord of the Fruit Flies can spawn if there's a harvest/rot of 10 or more plants together. After which he will spawn in the next 20 days if the same criteria is met. Also, I believe the timer is reduced by half a day when a crop rots. So take care of your plants!

Is Wormwood trash now?
Unfortunately, Wormwood doesn't excel at gardening (via the new system) more than anyone else. In fact, I would avoid planting without a hoe, as the crop placement is incredibly finnicky right now and crops may not be considered "on the tile" even if they appear to be.

Combinations

There's a handy thread right here for some top-notch combinations:

Final Notes

I might go into weeds & some other specifics/details at a later point. I've got other things to do today, but just wanted to get the basics out for those who are confused. Questions/Corrections are of course welcome. Happy farming!

Wormwood is actually buffed after this update

$
0
0

If you plant the crops at the right season the crop you planted demands, you'll get guaranteed drop of 1 crop and 1 seed.

All you need to do is plant crop at the right season. No need to water, tend or fertilize to mass-produce crops.

Seems good enough! (Without considering the applied horticulture nerf, of course.)

For instance you need to fertilize 12.5 manures per "1" pepper to get the giant one if you don't use plant combination methods.

But if you're Wormwood in summer or autumn, You just don't need do anything after putting them in the random ground.

The crops doesn't wither or start wildfire after this update, you don't even need to build flingomatic near the crops right now.

And some crops, for example pumpkins, potatoes, asparagus and carrots grow well in winter, that means Wormwood now can duplicate those kinds of crops even in winter.

Most of all, garlics grow well in every season. Now garlics are competitively considerable rival of peppers if you're Wormwood player.

Wickerbottom: Applied Horticulture (MEGABASE) nerf

$
0
0

I am a Wickerbottom main but try to read why i believe this is bad change before you think that i am complaining about my main character being nerfed.

If you aren't planning to read everything, here's the shortest explanation i can give, gathering twigs/grass/lichen (wood/feathers/reeds) after so many thousands of hours of playing DS/DST it becomes really annoying for me when i need thousands of basic resources for megabase.

There's really no balance for characters to be equally strong and that will never happen as this isn't a PVP game. There are also many characters that you may switch to when you want to use their abilites. Maybe you want Winona's catapults to be able to farm bosses or you have killed bee queen so many times that you believe it is worthwhile to use jelly beans on wormwood for living logs? Then there's Warly for his food bonuses or maybe now Wurt is also good choice for craftsmerm houses to make fish farm since bunnymen have been nerfed in the beta, i am sure that someone will soon find a replacement. Don't forget that players will switch to Wickerbottom to use her books.

What can be said from this is that there are many characters that are used as switch characters, also this is mostly for megabasing and i don't see why this shouldn't be possible. Only downside is that someone may use these characters just for their abilities and never actually give them a try and it makes them less appealing once you have exhausted the benefits of their abilities and aren't forced to stay and play as them. I am not going offtopic because many people want Wickebottom nerfed when there's no need as it doesn't matter if a character is strong or not, if you need to keep playing as said character to be able to use their abilities, or you can just switch to another. Here's an example, If you pick Winona and make catapults, you don't ever have to play her again while using them to your benefit for unlimited number of days, this will make it less likely for you to main her.

Since i went over why i believe characters being stronger or weaker doesn't matter or shouldn't with the current situation where they are being used for their abilities then switched back to your main, i'd like to talk more about Applied Horticulture being almost unusable now considering its efficiency the recipe is much more expensive and it only works on 10 plants. At the very least recipe cost should be reverted.

2 papyrus 1 seed 1 Manure >>>>>> 2 papyrus 5 seeds and 5 manure plus limitation to 10 plants

Is there even a situation where you will want to use this book as it currently is? Probably not, you'll need to reset the world until you get a reed trap setpiece and just use lureplant.

Now to go back to the Applied Horticulture, It wouldn't be a bad idea if it was reverted but for her to not able to use the book on the new farm plots and maybe do something with Wormwood here. The current nerf will just make the it much more tedious if megabase is your goal which doesn't make much sense because megabasing is one of the best options for people who have killed all the bosses and they don't think they have much left to do in the current world and they may start getting bored, now i believe they will much less likely decide to make a megabase if they have to grind so much.

If the issue is that it matters if the ability is strong or not, split it between Wickerbottom and Wormwood, this would also be fine. Wickerbottom could get pre-nerf Applied Horticulture that can only be used on reeds and lichen while Wormwood could get his own ability with similar cost that can be used on all other plants.

I know that this is beta, this is just my opinion on the Applied Horticulture changes and to many megabasers this is quite important.

I first want to say I really like the update, I just have a suggestion maybe the team could add a well.

Well:

4 cut stone, 2 boards, 1 gold shovel

This building is meant to transfer water into so you can fill up you're watering can at a more convenient location.

It can be filled up through rain or by bucket/watering can i think the well should at least hold 10 buckets/watering cans worth of water.

I'm such a huge fan of giant plants when they fully grow. But, I've notice something, most crops are giants, not all of them.

So I was wondering if that's just temporary or intentional.

I've been thinking it's just temporary, but I've been a little worried haha.

Living plants in moon biomes [Suggestion]

$
0
0

[Suggestion]

I think with the new RWYS beta Wormwood seems to have lost one of the most useful of his perks: planting seeds fo free

Before the update it would take 288 cut grass, 216 manure, and 144 rocks to plant 36 crops, and Wormwood could do that for free, making crops something that is actually useful for once in early to mid game.

But with the new update, while they still gave him little new things and nice perks, it only cost 12 logs, 6 cut grass and 2 flint to grow the same amount of crops than before, and it is actually better to use the Garden Rigmajig and hoe than planting stuff in the ground by Wormwood, since you can't fertilize the normal turfs and can't produce the Big crops unless you plant them in the Farm fields, and even if you plant them in the farm fields, sometimes they don't really detect it and thin they are planted in normal turf instead. Besides, if you are gonna plant them in the farm fields, why using Wormwood anyway.

Still planting crops in the ground has its benefits and is a good thing to be able to do but still this update just made Wormwood's special power kinda lacking the "special" and just being a normal perk.

NOW for the actual topic in the title:

I was watching a streaming on the beta when suddenly I looked at an onion and thought "Hmmm, that looks kinda like a head or something, it'd be funny to see an onion grow some arms and legs and start walking around" then i made a suggestion in the stream chat and everyone seemed to like it.

What if you decided to make farms in the Lunar Island or Lunar Grotto Biome and when harvesting the crops, some of them suddenly came alive and started walking, some of them aggressive, some of them neutral?

I say the lunar biome because it has showed to make plants come alive multiple times with things like carrats, saladmanders, bulbous lightbulbs and so on, and also so it would be a nice way to control if you want to grow normal plants (main island) or living ones (lunar biomes)

And then what about Wormwood actually being able to befriend the living plants, this way giving more emphasis in one of the other perks that really needs more attention by Klei; the fact that Wormwood is a plant-creature hybrid that can relate and befriend plants, since there is a really small portion of the living plants that are actually passive to Wormwood.

So this way you can reproduce carrats and saladmanders by planting carrots and dragon fruits respectively in the moon, but also have more living versions of other crops that could act as followers for Wormwood and maybe not be so useful for other characters, so it's a Wormwood-only perk and more of a little annoyance to some players that want to base in the moon.

But not only this, what if you actually grew the big versions of the crops and then those came alive? then you'd have a bigger and stronger version of said living plants. (Imagine new Giant Carrats and Saladragoons) [you could use Giant Carrats to win easier in the carrat races if you activate the year of the carrat event]

There is one downside to this tho, and it's that making this changes to Wormwood would turn him in another monster-character-that-befriends-its-own-species like Webber and Wurt are, but still would make him somewhat interesting and it is different since he has to grow his new little friends.

TL;DR  Wormwood is not so special anymore so I suggest new crops come alive when grown in the Moon biomes and he can befriend them to have them as followers. Just imagine a Wormwood with an army of walking onions and tomaroots.

After the last QoL update, we have the cook book to store recipes, and soon we will have 2 new compendium for crops & fertilizer.

As I was testing the beta, it occurred to me that I have to notice my character quote to know if a crop is recorded or not, so maybe add a jingle (like the sound when an item can be prototype) to help new player learning?
