On topic "Tips on how to be Courteous to Fellow Players"

$

Hello fellow Forum Members! Those of you who've been around for a while probably remember this topic made by @MenaAthena:

It was pinned for quite a long time, however, it has been removed some time ago, I guess in the last year at some point.

I really liked the tips Mena gave, they can be the backbone of a healthy and friendly community. I (still) play quite often on public survival servers with random players of every skill level and these tips are still very actual. "Don't ask where the Base is Right After Joining" (a classic, heh :D), "Don't Pick Everything", "Don't Enter in Winter or Summer" or "If you don't want Strangers, set a Password" are some of the most important and relevant ones and my favourites (in fact, there's been a rant on the latter topic on steam lately (again)).

Does anyone know why this topic got un-pinned? Maybe because it got archived? I think it is still worthy of being on the top of the general forums, so that new players can find it as well. Could we get it back in some way?

Thoughts on Reap What You Sow?

Hello there, I wanna know what everyone's thoughts are on the new update "Reap What You Sow" so far, I've been seeing a lot of mixed thoughts on the topic and wanted to know what people think on here, do you think the recent reworks and the first ever nerf will change the game for the better or worse?

My Opinion is that this update is an amazing addition to the game, giving players a higher reward for tending to they're crops instead of just leaving them for 3 days and then duplicating them into more when finished. sure it seems like it'll be more complicated to make vegetables, but once looked into there isn't any real way that prevents you from farming the same with farm plots, you can still leave your crops alone and still get the same results. The only problem with not being around your crops is the fruit flies appearing. The nerf to Wickerbottom in this update in my opinion is more than fair, if she wasn't nerfed the farm rework would have been basically worthless, it makes players put effort into they're farms. Overall I think this update is one of the best updates we've gotten, why'd they have to nerf eggs tho.

My feedback and possible suggestion on the new bunnyman drop table

The recent change nerfed drop table of bunnyman to reduce the “overpowerness” of bunnyman farms and make players to consider to use different long-term sources of food like the new gardening. I think that this change was needed regardless of the new content and I like it.

However, what I don’t like is that now it is almost pointless to kill a bunnyman by yourself.  Whenever I was roaming in the caves, from time to time I bypassed those “lonely bunny hutches” and that meant at least two carrots that could help me on my way through the caves. Now knowing that it can drop only one bunny puff… it is simply not worth the trouble.

My suggestion is:

Make it that the old drop table is applied only when the bunnyman is killed by a player. Apply the new one when the bunnyman is killed in any other way including catapult or other bunnymen.

This way killing a bunnyman by yourself stays rewarding and will not cause mass-production of food by using cheap methods.

The Starver's Guide to Self-Feeding Farms

$
0
0

Guess who had a ton of free time on his hands and decided to compile a list of all possible crop combinations whose nutritional needs sum up to a grand total of zero, meaning you need only take care of tending and watering. Note, the combinations listed here must exist within each individual soil tile for this to work; crops in one tile cannot feed crops in an adjacent tile.

But first, have a free table of farm plant stats as of the latest patch. (The wiki's page had not been properly updated when this was made, so I had to make my own table to figure things out.)

image.png.72d45c0d2935db19566a4d7fa8425a69.png

Now, on to the possible configurations of a self-feeding farm...

Type A: Three Different Crops in Equal Amounts

farm_3.thumb.png.a4590e74f2f3ae2474b10f4b631b545e.png

This is by far the most common configuration. I couldn't come up with a way to get all the crops to meet the family requirement, so I went with a simple columns design instead. Turn out that, aside from 2 crops at each corner, which were "isolated", the rest had no issue growing into oversized plants. It is possible that long term use of this design will cause a bit of a nutrient imbalance at these 4 corner tiles, but I believe the difference in growth speed (nutrients are consumed/produced when going from one stage to the next) between the isolated plants and the rest is small enough that this will not happen.

In any case, this imperfection is more than acceptable for me, because it does not scale with farm size. If you were to make, say, a 10x10 farm area, you could grow 10x10x9=900 plants in it and only 4 of those would be "isolated". So the imperfection becomes largely insignificant in bigger farms.

Type B: Two Crops in Equal Amounts

farm_1_1.thumb.png.826c8ed0255dcb1bdcef8d33c14f8143.png

For this one, you can place 4 of each crop in every tile, for a total of 8 crops per tile. To ensure the family requirement is met, I've arranged crops of the same type in an L shape, which is contained entirely within one tile. This means you can minimize or expand this setup as much as you want, because each tile is effectively autonomous. It also means you can combine multiple self-feeding farms of this type without a need to pay attention to plant proximity.

Type C: Two Crops at a 2:1 Ratio

farm_2_1.thumb.png.f54b7959be4581c761d71e3c3ceab9b2.png

Last but not least. Here each tile has 2 adjacent columns of the first plant (which is always either Toma Root or Watermelon) and 1 column of the second plant (in this case, Dragon Fruit). The first plant's family requirement is met within the tile itself, so you need not concern yourself with. However, you must make sure that the second plant is always facing another of its kind.

As a result, the minimum size of this setup is 1x2 and you must take care to ensure that the crops are always facing other crops of their kinds for this to work. (e.g. Toma Roots facing Toma Roots, Dragon Fruits facing Dragon Fruits)

And now, the part you've all been waiting for: all the possible crop combinations, arranged by preferred season. (Preferred season halves growth time and you need plants to grow at roughly the same ratio, or it will result in a nutritional imbalance.)

AUTUMN:

  • Carrot/Corn/Potato
  • Carrot/Corn/Eggplant
  • Pumpkin/Corn/Potato
  • Pumpkin/Corn/Eggplant
  • Toma Root/Potato
  • Toma Root/Eggplant
  • Toma Root/Toma Root/Pepper
  • Garlic/Pepper/Onion

WINTER:

  • Carrot/Potato/Asparagus
  • Pumpkin/Potato/Asparagus
  • ... that's it

SPRING:

  • Carrot/Corn/Potato
  • Carrot/Corn/Eggplant
  • Carrot/Potato/Asparagus
  • Carrot/Eggplant/Asparagus
  • Carrot/Watermelon
  • Toma Root/Potato
  • Toma Root/Eggplant
  • Toma Root/Toma Root/Dragon Fruit
  • Toma Root/Toma Root/Durian
  • Watermelon/Watermelon/Onion
  • Watermelon/Watermelon/Pomegranate
  • Dragon Fruit/Garlic/Onion
  • Dragon Fruit/Garlic/Pomegranate
  • Durian/Garlic/Onion
  • Durian/Garlic/Pomegranate

SUMMER:

  • Garlic/Pepper/Onion
  • Garlic/Pepper/Pomegranate
  • Garlic/Dragon Fruit/Onion
  • Garlic/Dragon Fruit/Pomegranate
  • Toma Root/Toma Root/Dragon Fruit
  • Toma Root/Toma Root/Pepper
  • Watermelon/Watermelon/Onion
  • Watermelon/Watermelon/Pomegranate

That's all, folks!

Yep, it's one of those threads and this time it's by yours truly.

I'm sure that I'm missing some important details, cuz it's barely been 2 hours since the beta branch is open. But I'm know yall will be more than happy to correct me.

Now before you read further on I do want to say that I acknowledge that this update might just be a preparation just like the turn of tides.

This update,  or rather the idea behind it, seems confusing.

Farms got deleted which is a big loss for the base building fans. However we no longer have to spend literall stacks of grass and rocks if we want some greens.

Farming has been changed from a boring activity to a tedious activity. From what I've seen and experienced crops work the same when it comes to gains. When you harvest them you get a single crop and some seeds to replant. Caged birds are now useless in farming. Gardening hat appear to work like cookbook- allowing you to check what each crop likes.

Speaking of which- you now have to be a lot more invested in what seems to be no reward at all. Unless you get multiple crops after harvesting a happy plant I don't see no reason to waste your time on that. Since there's a scale for crops I assume that's the only reason why plants have all those requirements now- so that you can make a happy crop with heavy produce and gain braging rights. Was farming changed into a side activity? An in-game hobby just like fishing?

At first I thought that if you neglect your plants they'd just get up and beat you to death. But since nobody posted a datamined angry vegetable it seems that's not the case. Then letting your plants be stinky appears to only result in the new mob: Fruit Flies.

We got some new crops and stuff related to them but I don't know enough to talk about that.

I'm happy that Klei's decided to start making some big changes to the gameplay and to overhaul old content. But I'm just confused by what was done to farming.

This is what i learned from the new update

I found a functional crop set! I also have a small guide on how this works

First you will need to create 4 cultivation plots where there will have to be 9 holes in each one

1321962205_2020-11-28(1).thumb.png.82c8601d40006bebf4e6dc460cca8328.png

then you will need the following crops: potato, eggplant, pumpkin, garlic and tomato respectively

453128614_2020-11-28(2).thumb.png.5e0d30ebae71c1175f51308d86da1e14.png

Plant 8 potatoes, eggplant, pumpkins and tomatoes, for garlic only 4. Plant them making sure they are all in groups of 4, the plant feels lonely if there are no more plants of the same species nearby

1688197779_2020-11-28(3).thumb.png.c93c31897bab07c1470b53a30aa188e9.png

Now you have to water the plot 4 times (Tip: spamming right click does it in about 3 seconds)

104519056_2020-11-28(4).thumb.png.09762c26c1b93190d0e7013518f43969.png

You can use the one-man band to make all plants happy in no time

172422792_2020-11-28(5).thumb.png.33f6bca459808e71be5934a1b4c008cf.png

If your character says something similar to "a happy plant" it means that you are fine for this day

495995422_2020-11-28(6).thumb.png.592aa2c58b2f76ac462191b732f3bcc6.png

In the next few days you just have to make sure to water and play music for the plants

126019779_2020-11-28(8).thumb.png.3ad83805422500d2f6335737be3a3e28.png

Make sure that all the plants have heard music before it is tomorrow, they will only need happiness when they have moved to the next stage of growth, so you will probably have to spend some time playing music (In the image you can see that not all plants are affected because they have not yet grown)

1703382806_2020-11-28(9).thumb.png.fdbb1acd961504c8613f362755224677.png

A few days later and you will have many large crops

138272001_2020-11-28(10).thumb.png.bd1bba3f55ec0f3858f145fdaed8b146.png

How does this work?

All the plants that were chosen in this crop plot share the necessary nutrients with each other:

Eggplant
Consume: Manure 2
Produces: Growth formula 1 - Compost 1

Garlic
Consume: Compost 4
Produces: Growth Formula 2 - Manure 2

Potato
Consume: Manure 2
Produces: Growth formula 1 - Compost 1

Pumpkin
Consume: Growth formula 2
Produces: Compost 1 - Manure 1

Tomato:
Consume: Growth formula 1 - Compost 1
Produces: Manure 2

Simple formula

When adding all the nutrients, if the result between what is consumed and what is produced is 0 or more, it means that the farm does not need to be fertilized periodically.

If it is a negative number it means that the farm is not productive and will have to be fertilized often.

In this case

M = Manure - C = Compost - G = Growth Formula

Spoiler

We can reduce the 8 (potatoes, eggplant, pumpinks, tomatoes) and the 4 garlic to 2 (potatoes, eggplant, pumpinks, tomatoes) and 1 garlic, so the values of the plants that are 2 are doubled, Example:

(1) Eggplant
Consume: Manure 2
Produces: Growth formula 1 - Compost 1

(2) Eggplant
Consume: Manure 4
Produces: Growth formula 2 - Compost 2

Consumed: (-7M -6C -6G)
Produced: (7M +6C +6G)

(-7M -6C -6G) + (7M +6C +6G) = 0

The farm is productive

Yes, but why do I want these plants?

I was thinking of a farm that could cater to the basic needs, especially of new players:
Pumpkins for food (+37.5)
Eggplants and tomatoes for health (+20)
Potatoes and garlic for sanity (Creamy potato purée +33)

1913591218_2020-11-28(12).thumb.png.0f78e4cab99a47db7febfb3b723d3a84.png

it's a good recipe, especially for when I'm not in the mood to fight shadows with webber

Production and costs

Time to talk about those weird things called numbers, this is the farm production previously seen1037123639_2020-11-28(13).thumb.png.4e18166028ade7f0e3b904c33a4b81e5.png

It seems little, but keep in mind that the materials that were used for the construction and the process of this farm are only (3 boards, 2 ropes and 2 flints) and (2 gold, 4 nightmare fuel, 2 pigskin) instead of the expensive (10 grass, 6 manure, 4 rocks) that were needed to build a farm that produced only 1 fruit.

Conclusion

The new farms are pretty cool, fun and interesting to use, they seem boring and tedious, but they really are not, it is not such a complicated system, possibly the most difficult thing is to get a combination of crops that fits the play style of each player, is a great improvement to what they were.

(Also forget everything I said in my previous post, I didn't understand how it works very well)

Wormwood is actually buffed after this update

$
0
0

If you plant the crops at the right season the crop you planted demands, you'll get guaranteed drop of 1 crop and 1 seed.

All you need to do is plant crop at the right season. No need to water, tend or fertilize to mass-produce crops.

Seems good enough! (Without considering the applied horticulture nerf, of course.)

For instance you need to fertilize 12.5 manures per "1" pepper to get the giant one if you don't use plant combination methods.

But if you're Wormwood in summer or autumn, You just don't need do anything after putting them in the random ground.

The crops doesn't wither or start wildfire after this update, you don't even need to build flingomatic near the crops right now.

And some crops, for example pumpkins, potatoes grow well in winter, that means Wormwood now can duplicate those kinds of crops even in winter.

Most of all, garlics grow well in every season. Now garlics are competitively considerable rival of peppers if you're Wormwood player.

A new dangerous season

$

By removing the disease, it makes me think to a "rot season". A season where every plant would die, even trees. Everything.

I just wrote "I would like to feel some fears". But it's about a real fear to lose my game, and for that, we have to make the rollback useless. Just because we wouldn't be able to rollback days enough to save us.

A rot season could appear after 2 years. The best would be with a little warning. It wouldn't work if we place it every time after the summer. This warning would give us like 10 days to prepare ourselves. Does it mean bundle wraps ? I... Guess yes.

The thing is to put us in an emergency situation, where if we don't prepare ourselves, we would for sure die from starvation. All life would be dead, rabbit and pigs would turn into... things, dropping worse than monster meat. Expect no food source during this time.

Then it doesn't have to be every year, just unexpected.

I don't know how many players are using rollback, but I feel like we need some crazy situations where we could loose everything.

Don't Starve Together Roadmap 2020

dst_roadmap_2020.png

Hey everybody. Just taking a moment to check-in and update you all with the roadmap for 2020.

Please note that roadmaps are provided to give the community a sense on what we are working on and what is driving our decisions for what we are focusing on in the coming year. None of this is a promise or a guarantee. We always prioritize quality over deadlines and all dates and timelines are estimated to the best of our current ability. Many long time fans will know that we often add new things to these plans which often shifts things around a bit, so it is recommended to avoid scheduling your vacation plans around our dates.

This roadmap is subject to change at any time, but as we have done in the past, if any of this does change significantly we will post new information as we have it.

A quick recap of 2019.

2019 was a fantastic year for DST. We added four new characters to the game and we refreshed three more characters. We also had three substantial content updates with Return of them: Turn of Tides, Salty Dog and Hook Line and Inker. We also saw big updates to our holiday events Hallowed Nights, Winter's Feast and Year of the Carrat. During all of that we hit our highest player concurrency record back in April (during a free weekend) and after that craziness had stabilized we just saw our second highest concurrency last week.

For those of you who aren't super into numbers, what that means is that Don't Starve Together is still growing quite nicely. This is also a clear indicator that our plan of character refreshes, content updates and new characters has been working to help keep a healthy community and continues to keep the game interesting for new and returning players.

On that note, we're still very aware that many people want to see events like The Forge and The Gorge come back. While we are not prepared for that right now, we do understand that this is something many of you are interested in and we are still discussing ways to address this in the future.

ReForged and Re-Gorge-itated are both super good so until we have something new we want to contribute, you should check those out.
Re-Gorge-itated: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1918927570
ReForged: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1938752683

Oh, and not for nothing, we took great strides in console support. We didn't always hit the mark, but most everything we can control directly has been working out quite well over the past year or so. We will continue improving console support as best we can through 2020.

What we're doing in 2020

We're going to continue with generally the same plan as last year. More character refreshes and content. However, at this time we aren't going to commit to a specific number of new characters. While the new characters were very well received and successful in selling well enough to help fund development we also don't want to add new characters just for the sake of it. With that being said we are currently in the process of creating at least one entirely new character for the future and we will have more information about them as we get closer to release.

For our update timeline, we expect that we will have something being launched at least once a month. We don't want to do more updates in a shorter period of time so we can be sure the updates are more substantial and interesting. Depending on how that lines up we may see a couple updates during some months and sometimes we may go a little past a month for the next update, but our goal is that you have something interesting to look forward too at least once a month.

Our first character refresh is a bit of a secret at the moment - but you might be able to guess. You will be seeing more info about that during the first or second week of March. For now, enjoy this small teaser from the update trailer we are working on.

whocoulditbe_BG.png

Lore. Yep. I said Lore.

Something we know everybody wants is more lore. I am not going to say much more for now. But we know you want more lore.  It would be smart from this point on to get back into scrutinizing things we put out for secrets. Not everything, but keep your eyes open. Not this post though. There are no secrets in this post. So scrutinizing this post would probably be a waste of your time. Probably. (But really, there is nothing to find here. You'll know when there is something to be found.)

While Maxwell enjoyed hiding little secrets for you to find and seemed to bask in your attention, Charlie has been quite content to work from the shadows, planning and patiently working to put her pieces into play. Things will become much more apparent as her plans become to take shape and she finally takes center stage.

The other stuff.

We're also going to continue doing other cool new things. We really want to work on Klei Rewards more and streaming items have been really popular so we're thinking of new and interesting things to do with these while continuing to support them throughout the year.

And finally.

We're also aware than some players would like us to make more substantial changes to the overall base game of Don't Starve Together and change things up a bit. While this is not a focus right now, we do understand this is something that is being discussed and I invite you to continue those conversations. Don't Starve Together isn't going away any time soon, so keep it coming.

All of your feedback really helps us figure out where we want to put our resources and it goes a long way in helping us decide which direction to steer the ship. You're all a huge part of the growth of DST and we couldn't have done it without you. Thanks for hanging out with us and sharing your fun stories and interesting ideas. Please keep sending us your thoughts and feedback and we'll keep trying our best to build the world of Don't Starve Together in new and interesting ways.

Have fun out there!

I think reducing the visibility of these effects to half of what they are now is going to do wonders for our eyes.. thanks
