Willow the Fire...fighter?

$

Willow is an interesting character, because she is not good at starting fires, yet people think she is. She gets a lighter, but torches are easy to craft. Anyone can grab a torch and ignite something. She's not better at it than anyone else. Her fires aren't bigger, don't spread faster, or anything. Given the choice between Willow with her lighter, and Wickerbottom reading The End is Nigh, I can tell you who's gonna burn your base down, and she doesn't have pigtails. Heck, with Wolfgang's mighty speed buff, he can light fires faster than Willow, as can an overcharged WX-78 (after Wickerbottom read The End is Nigh).

What's interesting is that Willow is good at stopping fires. She has 3 seconds of fire damage immunity, half fire damage, and she's entirely immune to the burning from putting out smouldering objects. She can run into a burning base, collect everything that's catching on fire, and save more than any other character. She'll get sanity from doing so, and won't lose nearly as much health. All she has to do is momentarily dart out of the flames, and she's got 3 more seconds of fire suppression. She might even be able to go into smouldering chests, to grab ice, where other characters would burn to death trying to extinguish the chest to access it.

So it's really bizarre that she's "the character who burns down your base." Is it because she starts with a lighter, and griefers are just so stupid they can't even craft a torch? No, I think it's entirely our assumptions about her. Purely from her dialog, and her delight at being near fire and burning things, it leads us to assume she's the best for starting fires, and always use her to do so. It's actually really good, because people who only care about hurting others (not the game) will make the mistake of picking her, then be less effective, and more vulnerable to being outclassed by the better characters. People who hide their fear of caring about anything behind self-deprecatory humor, they pick Willow, and their days are numbered. If they picked Wigfrid they could linger longer, and make life harder for more people.

Y'know unless someone actually points it out, then everyone would know Willow's not who they should use to grief, but hey, who'd be stupid enough to do that?

So that makes Willow the best firefighter, for literal flames, and for containing destructive sprees by malicious players.

Hey everybody. Today we changed how gift items for owning Don't Starve Reign of Giants and Don't Starve Shipwrecked are being handled. Players no longer have to use their game keys to claim these items and will instead have the items granted to them automatically. If you already claimed these items, this change will not affect you. If you didn't claim these items already, you should find them in your inventory after the next time you log into DST.

Formal skins and Classic Curio Chests

Does formal skins even drop? I've getting skins in DST for about 2 years and got only 3 Maxwell's suits, 2 Winona's dresses and GoH Winona. It seems 10 original formal sets have the rarest drop chances. And look at the prices in Market! 1.5 years ago shadow ones was the most expencive, but now we have Classic Curio Chests. No, really, does anyone got something non-shadow from these chests?

Do you have the Display Food Values mod enabled?

If you do have it enabled, then disable it.

That mod spawns items right at the centre of your map whenever you hover over a cookable food item in your inventory and press the inspect key. This can cause performance issues when it has spawned thousands of items.

Up to more than a million users experience this issue, if we look at how many subscribers the mod has. So this affects a good chunk of the playerbase.

A video using the strategy

---- Complete Dragonfly Guide ----

https://pastebin.com/raw/zifBSj5C

Dragonfly is a fairly simple boss, though he has a few quirks that can make him difficult.

Dodging him involves timing, the reasoning for this is the dragonfly will move when he attacks, but only if he was moving while he started the attack.

AKA if he was standing still when he started the attack, he will remain still for the entire duration of the attack.

The way to dodge dragonfly is obvious then, time it so that you're next to him and not far out enough so he starts moving, let him begin his attack, and dodge in the small time frame.

You CAN react to this, but mostly you just want to count hits like kiting other bosses, it's just easier.

Next, once you deal enough damage to dragonfly, he starts spawning lavae waves, these die naturally after 30 seconds.

We want all the lavae to die so dragonfly enrages, then use the pan flute or any other method to calm him down from enraging, and he'll go back to attacking you normally.

Sadly, there is a bug in existence, if the last lavae dies naturally, then the boss has a 50/50 chance to enrage, or spawn more lavae, so running around is not viable.

The reason in the code for this, is that after the last lavae spawns, a timer runs for 30 seconds exactly, which resets the spawn integers for the next wave of lavae, though there's no real point to this timer actually.

Reason being, the dragonfly starts spawning lavae at set health percentages, where the spawn integers reset anyways, this shouldn't affect anything, but remember that the lavae die naturally after 30 seconds.

This causes a problem, code cannot run at the same time, so it has to choose to run the timer or let the lavae die first.

If the lavae dies first, there's an event that checks when lavae die if all of the lavae have spawned and are dead, if so, then the dragonfly enrages, in this case the dragonfly will enrage.

If the timer runs first, then the lavae will die immediately after, the problem with this is when our event checks if all of the lavae are dead and have spawned, it will show that all of the lavae have not spawned because our timer reset those values.

This means that the dragonfly will not enrage, and will go back to it's natural pattern, which is spawning more lavae since those values are not 0 and it has lavae to spawn.

The easy fix for this is to just remove the timer, if you just remove that timer, dragonfly works perfectly normally.

WE DO NOT like this 50/50 chance basically, when he spawns a wave of lavae, his next wave will spawn 1 more lavae and so on, so get enough bad luck and you'll be swarmed pretty quickly with a dragonfly running after you on top of that.

So we need to seperate the dragonfly from the last lavae, and have time to kill it before it dies naturally.

The way to do this is fairly simple, but don't **** it up or you may have to fight another wave of lavae, which is obnoxious.

Let all the lavae spawn EXCEPT ONE, then follow the dragonfly to where it's going to spawn the last lavae, or pan flute quickly if it's spawning the last lavae at that pool, you want to pan flute when you're sure where it's going to spawn the lavae.

Once the dragonfly is sleeping, run to the other edge of the arena from where the dragonfly is going to spawn the last lavae, if you do this correctly, once it wakes up and spawns the last lavae, dragonfly will not aggro onto you.

Run around until all the lavae except the last one have died naturally, you now have a pan flute + the time it took for the dragonfly to spawn the lavae's time to kill the lavae, which is plenty of time, especially when it's alone.

Once dragonfly enrages, simply pan flute the dragonfly, and then attack and continue the kiting pattern as normal.

Repeat this until the dragonfly is dead, congratulations, you killed dragonfly pretty easily without a cheesing strategy or tons of items.

Hopefully wasn't too cringe or difficult to understand.

Kiting?

How to kite? No, I know, there are a dozen guides out there saying to run at a monster, then run back once you provoked its attack, then run at it again and hit it. But how exactly do you do that, with your physical computer equipment?

I tried clicking them to attack, then clicking away to dodge back, then clicking to attack again, but I kept missing and the character would run past them without attacking. Or dodging back way too far before I could get the cursor hovered over the monster again. Or pausing to chop a tree I accidentally clicked on. To say nothing of monsters like pigs, who move when you're trying to click them.

So, I tried directional keys, and had... slightly better luck. Is there a key you like to put auto-attack on, so you're not holding it while trying to press multiple direction keys with the same hand? Left... control or something? That makes fighting with a mouse difficult... assuming you're an idiot like me who learned to use a mouse left-handed.

Additionally, directional keys are much less convenient than a joystick, because you can only move at 45 degree angles without a lot of swerving, and only at 90 degree angles, if you don't want to hold down two keys at once. I mean, I ended up thinking to myself, "Okay, hold left, while infrequently tapping up to travel left and slightly up, until there, time to dodge! Now hold down... wait, was that hold down and tap right, or hold right and... wait no, I was supposed to hit auto-attack and... dammit it hit me again!"

Of course I don't have a joystick. Must this be rectified? (Is using a joystick even possible, with the PC version?)

Why Has Nothing Changed?

I know what you're probably thinking.

"Oh boy another buff Willow/Woodie thread where yet another bozo gives his idea of what needs to be done to fix them. Haven't seen one of those this week. Guess we're due"

But in actual fact that's not what this is about. It occurred to me that despite the near-constant posting of character rebalance threads in the past years or so almost nothing has changed. To begin, there is simply no denying the outcry the community has had asking for a rebalance that makes Willow and Woodie viable again yet we have received virtually nil in response, despite being the foundation of the game's active community. And that's what this is actually about, it's about why almost nothing changed. It's pretty obvious most of the community desires a buff for these characters, considering the literal hundreds of discussions, posts, arguments, name calling, and threads on the various platforms (steam, discord, youtube, and the forums), yet it seems as though all pleas have been, for the most part, utterly ignored and forgotten, resulting in the cycle never ending.

Not only this, but the horrific disparage in balance between the characters had led to severe animosity and elitism within the community itself, spearheaded by a youtuber who shall remain unnamed all in defense of "the meta." The simple fact is that we have reached a point in the community where if you want to be involved, you have to be careful playing certain characters as your main otherwise you will face severe prejudice, potentially leading to more difficulty developing in the community. There is no way this helps encourage new players.

Maybe I'm just crazy right? Perhaps there has been changes made and I haven't noticed them. Well I decided to check and all I could find in terms of buffs was this:

  • At some point Willow's insanity freeze was nerfed so that it could only freeze her in winter without something else (woah what a MASSIVE buff)
  • Apparently they gave Willow a whole extra second of fire immunity at some point to before deciding that was too op and removing it
  • As far as I know the only buff woodie has received in DST is the ability to plant pinecones and birch nuts for sanity (actually halfway decent but completely out scaled by his nerfs)

These "buffs" are the equivalent of putting a band aid on a bullet wound.

So why has it only been this despite the near constant requests for change? Certainly Klei has seen at least some of the community who has been asking, even if they've actively attempted to ignore or quell posts regarding this subject.

Ok, so the majority of the community wants a buff and that nothing has been really done in earnest to sate this desire, perhaps there's some excellent reasoning as to why we don't actually need the buff. Certainly there's something we're collectively missing here, that actually makes the character imbalance justifiable? In that case let's examine the top arguments in defense of leaving things the way they are now.

Griefing

(this argument relates to Willow specifically). I can hear it now. But if we buff Willow griefers are gonna have a field day! We can't let that happen! In actual fact this argument holds no weight simply because while Willow is slightly better for griefing, any character can craft a torch and burn down everything.

I mean the nerf placed on Willow has worked so well after all anyways, am I right? Wait no actually it hasn't quelled griefing at all, and it still runs rampant as exemplified by the recent dedicated klei server takeovers. As it turns out, not all griefing even bothers with fire, there's more options than just that. The short of it is that griefing didn't justify the initial nerfing, and still doesn't justify.

Protecting "The Meta"

It is an unfortunate truth that the community struggles with severe animosity and hate developed from the imbalance in the characters. Despite this, there are those who would argue Klei need not touch character balance because it might upset the precious meta that they've worked hard to dominate most of the game's community with. I'd suggest that this argument is flawed in the sense that it is foremost inherently unethical, and secondly this thread is more about buffing characters that are at a current severe disadvantage, not nerfing those already on top of the pyramid. Sure it might weaken the most powerful characters by comparison, but it would be nice to not be called a r******* ape for playing my main for a change.

It's not necessary...

This is a pretty uncommon argument, not gonna lie, even generally the most elitist player admits that a buff would be in order, and then goes on generally laughing as they know nothing will even actually be done. However, I have heard this said before, and I'm going to address it. Generally out of the people who make this argument are not super involved or simply don't understand the situation (they often play the OP characters and can't really see the issue from their ivory tower). The truth is something needs to be done, the current disparage is massive, and while I certainly expect nothing to actually come of this thread (it'll likely be thrown on the pile and ignored), it's important as a community we continually call this out.

Another variant of this is "It's just a game, calm down." There is an important distinction to be made here, I'm well aware that this is a game and that it has no tangible impact on real life if Willow and Woodie, two fictional characters, are never buffed. However I love this game and want the absolute best for it, so if I see a problem, I'm going to call it out and say something because I desire a well balanced game. Not to mention it does get kinda discouraging when you're put down for your main repeatedly because they're "useless" (as stated by others).

Sure the Community might be requesting it but is it really a good idea?

My response to this is as follows:

Yes, and if you don't agree just compare the characters currently.

Just use Mods, K?

How would you feel if your main required mods, which are often laughed out in the community as de-legitimizing, just to be played on par with the other characters? What does this say about the balancing if this is one of the current major arguments? What if I told you that mods are often poorly made, buggy, or don't truly encapsulate a healthy buff?

Conclusions

Honestly, I'm aware jack diddly is gonna come of this thread but the community needs to continually keep requesting it. This was not a "bash klei thread" and if you think that then I must have used poor word choice. It's more just calling out an issue I've seen in the game that still hasn't been fixed, and desperately needs change. The flaw's effects have unfortunately taken root but I legitimately believe it is not too late to repair and rebalance Willow and Woodie. As for what that looks like, it's on Klei to really decide what should be done, however I've outlined my own suggestions in another thread.

Created a fenced pathway all the way from cave entrance to ruins

Got tired of dodging shadow monsters, splumonkeys, depth worms and slurpers on the way to the ruins, running wasted a lot of time.

I built a pretty wide pathway using wooden fencing and it works better than I thought, the tooth traps at the exit aren't even needed because nothing makes it past the barriers.   Didn't take too long to build and traveling through it is kind of like going past museum exhibits, you see all kinds of stuff but it is all safely behind an uninterrupted wall.   You can encircle or destroy the monkey houses but that doesn't take care of the rest.

When I need to jump I just use a lazy explorer, once in the ruins I can deal easily with any shadow monsters that come up (I have one of my four bases there).   If depth worms show up at base I just lead them to a small area with tooth traps.
