Totally useless items OR just alternative to something

Hi there!

I would like to discuss few items in Don't Starve Together. Do you think they are totally useless (why:expensive, replacing backpack, any other reason) or, somehow, they can be useful in some situations. Otherwise, what would you change or improve to make you to give them a chance. Do they need any changes or the items were implemented just for fun?

I'm just disappointed that I never seen anyone would craft any of listed items. Some of them are really cool and "cool" like Ice Cube and Watermelon, for example. I crafted most part of them only once - out of interest. And second time - to be sure I don't need them :D .

Please add information if you are using slots mods like BackPack+Armor slots especially.

Anyways so recently, there is a rumor going around that Charlie's sister Winona may be added into the game as a playable character. People have been claiming they even found numerous, numerous dialogue strings for her in the code; which have just recently disappeared. The dialogue actively referenced themes such as Winona being familiar with the factory workplace and mechanics, Maxy which was Charlie's nickname for Maxwell - Waxwell - William and that there is a potential feature which gives Winona one free hit from Charlie in the darkness.

Highly unlikely this is a prank from the developers for April Fools seeing as that would just be an incredibly poor way to infuriate the fanbase, Perhaps this may even be a prank made by fans themselves who are all falsely claiming that something existed in the code which isn't. But would like to believe people do not suck that much.

There is a mod for Winona, but it is apparently very outdated and the text strings found include dialogue for very modern updates to the game like the Atrium. So it could not be some player accidentally viewing a mod they installed as a part of the core game.

Would also like the believe if it was fake the developers would step in to disprove it all to save the playerbase a massive disappointment.

 

However the developers are also very well aware that any coding they put into the game is blatantly dug up as it is released, and that their fans are very much used to deciphering vague information the developers leave behind. Having Charlie's sister added to the game would also be a very logical way to advance the plot and hinting to it around April Fools just causes more chaos.

 

Any thoughts, information on the subject, so on.

Lore, From Ancients to the Fuelweaver [Theory]

I've been spouting lore and theories in several different threads, and finally decided to make a single location for it. My most prominent theory is about the statues not being statues, but the bodies that the ancients left behind. Instead of making a wall of text, however, I decided to do something different and make it into a video. Hopefully that will keep people more engaged, and be easier to follow.

I'm no expert with this stuff, and not much of a speaker so forgive the quality.

While most of my interest lies with the statues, I go over a number of topics including some interesting details regarding some of the Fuelweaver's quotes. I tried not to make too many bold statements, aside from the statue one, but rather share things I've noticed. Which may or may not be relevant. That way you can come to your own conclusions, and add to your own surplus of ideas.

I very much want to hear everyone's own thoughts regarding everything lore. Different angles and opinions can draw us closer to the truth! We're all in the dark here, so there is no sure answer. Differing thoughts will occur, but let's keep our minds open shall we?

Please Add Critters to the Wild

I just want to see them naturally in the wild during Spring. To make the game feel that it´s actually a living world and create a better sense of immersion. 

Here's some ideas:

- Varglings spawn near Hound Mounds in Spring and they stay close to it at all times (making them difficult to approach).

- Catcoons in Spring spawn out of the Hollow Stump with a little Kittykit, which follows the mamma around wherever they go.

- Ewecus in Spring spaws with a little Ewelet.

- At full moons in Spring, if Glommer's flower is still on the Statue, little baby Glomgloms will come along with Glommer and frolic nearby the statue. 

- In Spring, there's a chance that picking a berry bush will disturb a Gobbler's nest and five littke Gibblents will jump out, and dash for berries. 

You can kill critters for morsels (except for Glomglom, you get monster meat) and it has severe naughtiness point (because, you know, you are killing a puppy). Or you can catch them with a net and tame them that way. You can still keep the Critters Tab and the Rock Den, but just have this as an alternative for players who are more into the exploration and survival aspects of the game.

Usefulness of Certain Biomes?

The game does a good job of making every biome useful for something but it feels like the balance of usefulness in a normal world is really awkward.

So, deserts provide bones, rocks, ore, tumbleweed, cactus. Plains has bees, berries, all the normal resources. Swamp has reeds, spiders, tentacles, merm. Spider forest has spiders, lesser normal resources, graves, pigs.

But the savannah, deciduous and mosaic are really left out?

 

Savannah has rabbits, spiders and beefalo, but the only many resource is grass. So, outside of acquiring grass a savannah biome in itself has no inherent resources players will want. And since grass can usually be found in the plains it matters even less.

Deciduous has birch, pigs, catcoons and mushrooms, with some lesser resources. But in the end players normally only go to the deciduous for Glommer or the King. Catcoons are good for meat and birch for trail mix, but both of those sources are obsolete compared to most others in easier places. The biome itself has virtually no resources that are valuable enough to encourage players to go there. Which is the big reason why generic Pig King bases are so unethical because the deciduous biome itself has no majorly useful materials for players to sustain themselves with.

Mosaic has rocks, and a graveyard. Personally hate the existence of this biome because outside of the graveyard; there is literally no beneficial resources for players to gather while they are there other then rocks. Which is what the rockland is meant to be for is the prime rock source, so the mosaic is basically a second rockland pretending it is something more; with a graveyard as attempted evidence.

 

It would be cool if they maybe "buffed" these biomes to give them better resources. Perhaps the savannah could have more rocks and rare gold veins to make it a soft-rockland, the deciduous could have significantly more mushrooms and inherent juicy berry bushes, and the Mosaic could have less rocks but more random resources. Just something to make these biomes more useful on their own since they currently feel like dead-zones in the world where there are only specific reasons to visit them, which often are unrelated to the resources of the biome itself.

Savannah would give players a more lenient access to rocks on-the-fly, players could visit the deciduous for the unique mushrooms and gather berries while there, and the mosaic would just have general useful things for players to gather.

 

Although it would also be useful if catcoons occasionally spawned in the plains, since they are a pretty generic mob yet they are confined to one biome where they are rarely interacted with.

How is it: Life without Extra Equip Slots

Hello,

The problem I described under the spoiler (lots of text). So this is short version of topic: please give us comments about your play style.

  • I will never prefer anything to my wonderful backpack! (armor sometimes)
  • I'm always using hibernation vest, puffy vest, breezy vest, summer frest, hunger belt, amulets and other stuff instead of backpack (krampus sack is for unorganized people :D )
  • I'm using Extra Equip Slots and I'm able to use anything I want in game!

This is not suggestion actually, because I have no idea what to do with it, but without Extra Equip Slots Mod, lots of features in game are useless for you. I'm playing without mods and I love to visit official Klei public servers (There's no mods installed). The problem is: I can't use all those things in game like: amulets, jackets to control temperature (Breezy vest, puffy vest, raincoat, summer things), hunger belts and lots of other. I guess no one will prefer Hibearnation Vest to 8 backpack slots with thermal stone in it. And especially to Krampus sack. It makes Bearger killing pointless.

At the same time Extra Slot makes game much easier: you can just put armor to your slot and you will never accidentally die of tentacle; It's much easier on boss fights, cause you're not limited by usual inventory and you don't have to craft armor on the go; and also extra slot with armor helps you a lot in ruins; eyembrella can be easily replaced with raincoat and rain hat in spring (Never ever crafted them). 

I know, there's some useless things in Don't Starve (watermelon hat, ice cube hat etc..) and stuff like that is normal practice, but still...

Well, i just would like to be able to use all game contents. I think here's lots of people also disappointed by the fact. You will never see anyone on public server without mods wearing puffy vest, excepting newbies. 

So I would like to ask community what do they feel about that?

Beasts (Koalephants, Goats, Beefalo) licks saltlick through fences and walls. It's sadly, because them do not need to close up with saltlick that licks. It can not be possible to pen beefalo and goats in one complete pen. Please fix this bug. These goats are have thelepathy. Sorry for my english. Screenshot is down.

Hey guys! We put together this bonus update with some extra stuff that didn't quite make it during A New Reign updates. A few secrets, and a bunch of bug fixes included as well! =)
 

Changes

  • Carrying a Thulecite Medallion now reveals the location of the Ancient Key on your minimap. (Even if the key is inside a container, or carried by a player or Ancient Guardian.)
  • Ancient Fuelweaver now drops a Bone Helm, which attracts Shadow Creatures but prevents them from attacking you unless provoked.
  • Deerclops, Bearger, Goose/Goose, and Dragonfly now drop Sketches for crafting sculptures in their image.
  • Added secret recipes for crafting replicas of the Ruins Relics.

 

Bug Fixes

  • Reduced Volt Goat physics radius. (Now matches Beefalo size.)
  • Fixed ocean waves animation glitch when rotating the camera.
  • Fixed missing speech strings for Maxwell overusing Birds of the World.
  • Fixed incorrect loot tables for Monkeys in normal and Nightmare phases.
  • Fixed bug where Poison Birchnut Tree Trunks did not save properly and drop Living Logs.
  • Fixed bug where Tree Trunks may not turn to Ash properly when burnt off-screen.
  • Fixed bug where Heal action can show up for Player ghosts.
  • Fixed bug where Bug Net Catch action can show up for insects in inventory or containers.
  • Fixed bug where Werepigs sometimes fail to transform back to normal Pigmen.
  • Fixed bug with Bearger’s ground pound sometimes incorrectly deals damage multiple times to the same target.
  • Fixed bug where Klaus’s Loot Stash may respawn incorrectly sometimes after a server is restarted.
  • Fixed bug where Beefalo Horn still sounds even when the action is interrupted.
  • Fixed bug where Spider Queen can sometimes spawn on invalid ground.
  • Fixed bug where Eye Plants do not resume spawning after extinguishing a burning Meat Bulb.

A New Reign Puzzle - Metheus

With the release of the free A New Reign expansion, comes more puzzles and mysteries from Klei.

The Fuelweaver's 3rd form, fightable in the Atrium, has a string of quote that said "Metheus..."

The user @ImDaMisterL, with his ingenious and brilliant mind, just goofed up the webpage and inputted that there as a what if. What an Einstein.

So, what exactly lead the community to think something was going on?

Klei posted the release trailer of the A New Reign free expansion:

And it had some moments where hidden images could be seen i one paused at the right time before/after/in the middle of transitions.

That seemed to depict weird symbol, maybe even a language, and the community already started to theorize. Some people linked the some of the symbols to older William Carter/Maxwell puzzles.

The First Day

Yes, a cave wall and what appears to be some torches/lanterns. Nothing special was happening, and we realized we'd have to wait.

Ater that, the user @Mobbstar used pro hacking skills to access the available assets page and found 4 very interesting images:

This topic would be updated as the puzzle progressed, but I'm a bit busy nowadays, so I'll take longer to update it properly.

Problem With The New Ancient Fuelweaver Helmet ?

After the release of today's update, we discover the addition of an Ancient Fuelweaver helmet that makes shadow creatures neutral for the helmet owner player, if the player don't attack them.

However, I also do tests, and I notice a "bug", a forgot, or simply something that will never be added, but I find it strange that with the helmet, only crawling horror and terror beak become neutral .

Why do shadow chess pieces always attack ?

These monsters are practical as they fight other creatures AND MUST be built and activated at new moon. Will they becomes neutral in a future update for skeleton helmet owners ?

What do you guys think?

How come Klei keeps implementing useless/underpowered and highly exploitative items?

An item from the latest update: napsack...

You'd think Klei would know what they are doing. So, the heck? I just don't understand and would like some clarification. Overlooks? Other items are not taken intro consideration when making them? Balance is completely disregarded? Not enough testing? I'm confused :(

I'm not talking about decorative stuff, of course, this is all stuff that is supposed to be used in some form. Do they want them to be situational only? Because generally speaking, you can't use this much due to it requiring Toadstool skins, obviously.

On the other hand, some other items they implemented in the update, like the bone armour, just make things that aren't supposed to be easy, easier, aka enable more ways to exploit the game. Why is this? How does it come to it?
