The Atrium

$

So i finally got to the Atrium in my main save and i have a few things i want to say.

Ill get right to the point!

Things i love about the atrium are:

  • The fact that it is separate and you cant just wonder into the place.
  • The lay out and the whole feel of the place. (creepy as all hell)
  • THE LORE!

Things i think need to change:

  • The size of the place seems really small.
  • The spiders!!! Oh my the spiders, the number of nests need to be lowered a lot. Five nest on top of each other is just too much.
  • New monsters would be nice. Maybe a new kind of spider or something i don't know. :)

I didn't talk about loot becasue it seems like they are working on it. So i just hope we get some good loot.

I know its still early days and things can and will change. :)

So upon playing beta, you know the Reanimated Skeleton, right?

Well, this is what I found on the wiki when it dies (Its death statement)

Dead and Over-Expensive Items

The game has a lot of them surprisingly. They are just items in the game that either are not worth using, or they require too many resources.

While it is true that playing longer sessions will eventually lead to an abundance of resources. Most public servers do not last past winter. And in general, it makes little sense how the resource requirement of certain items just, scales up sharply for no reason at all. While other items have just unbalanced features in general.

Some examples would be the Piggyback. If the developers increased its resource requirement, and removed its negative effects, it could be a legitimate second tier backpack players who save up or survive long enough can get. Instead, never really used. Why be slower, that means every trip will be longer.

Oh if you wield the walking cane you can move around just fine with the Piggyback. Well then why do you not just get rid of the Piggyback and fly around the map with the cane with a mere four less inventory slots. anticipated counter to generic everything-is-useful commentors

Also have the Bat Bat. Lots of resources, few uses. There is also Smallbird raising, which is just a challenge instead of a real beneficial mechanic. Same goes for Beefalo riding, takes up too many resources and is completely finite. Farm pits, lots of resources required yet they barely produce any food; ever. Why make a bee mine, when you have tooth traps. Why make a bee box, it really does not produce anything you need that is worth sacrificing the time over doing something else.

Honestly backpacks in general should be nerfed. They pretty much defeat the existence of torso items in general, can just use a thermal stone to substitute for warm or cool tops. Can just swap back and forth between the backpack and torso armor. Unless the developers intended for backpacks to be the base, always present lifeblood of the player; it really should not dominate the scene as much as it does over everything else. Again, less variety in how people play the game because of this.

The game has a surprising amount of things like this. If the Piggyback and Beefalo riding features had their negative and finite aspects removed, and their resource requirement increased, they could become legitimate higher-tier features of the game players could work towards. If the Bat Bat did not cost such a ridiculous amount for so little use, it could be an actual weapon players use. Instead these items have mixed requirements and aspects; which leads to them being completely cosmetic or not even worth getting to begin with.

General discussion and references to other items in the game which could use improvement would be useful for bringing more attention to this.

You should kill all beefalos?!

Hello.  Some youtuber guy, "a very experienced player", claims you should kill all beefalos on the map very early in the game because they provide nothing useful and, on the other hand, are dangerous while in heat and are overpopulating the world after a while. He says it is common knowledge among the pro players.

The dude is making a video telling the average joe to kill all beefalos.. .

What does the community thinks?

Do beefalo respawn if they all killed?

Hi everyone!

Question is pretty simple. I just would like to get actual information about that and specially for DST, cause a lot of changes were added just to multiplayer version. Part of my friends keep telling me stories about respawned beefalos in random place. If all beefalo killed, you can't bring marble pieces to the place (nobody wants to do it himself). so you have to restart your world or you can just wait and find them somewhere accidentally?

What do you think about that? Have you any information? Please share.

What kind of a drawback would the community want for Willow?

Probably the most controversial character, mechanically speaking, being begged to have various previous or new buffs being added to her to not be so darn useless (two people triggered already) and not that fun to play either (five people triggered now).

I'm all for her having Bernie, her Lighter and fire immunity as boons for certain reasons, however, if those were to be changed to be very cool and very good boons to make her a wantable character, both individually and in relation to other players, what kind of drawbacks exactly should she have then? Most, if not all characters who have special boons have certain disadvantages to them in some form as well, at the very least in single player, so, if the aforementioned three things are her pros, what should be her cons or at least one con? Because it would make her probably the most unbalanced character, or "OP", so to speak if she just has  pretty good buffs, but no drawbacks, as if were to be an improved Wilson in a way (aside from the beard).

Two ideas I had were:

1) Bring her "lights things on fire when nervous" or even expand on that (e.g. lighting things on fire when losing a lot of sanity even if insane in some form, lighting fires when she's about to be attacked by charlie occasionally or every time).

2) Make her more vulnerable to freezing in general, but make her much more resilient, if not immune, to heat.

Because I've heard people being disappointingly pissed from her just freezing-when-insane ordeal and I can kind of agree with that and it seems like a little bit of 'thrown in there just for "chalunj"' type of a thing. Although, the first of the above can cause issues of base burning again early game, without any good preventions, unless you anticipate it beforehand and the second one, I feel kind of "meh" about and not that it would be something really fitting for her.

May be you guys have better ideas for her drawbacks. Or perhaps you have some good pros that subsequently provide some good drawbacks or make certain "meh" kind of drawbacks more fitting?

I'm interested in making a grass gekko farm, but I'm not entirely sure how far the grass gekkos need to be moved to achieve the desired effect (not preventing more gekkodudes from spawning.) The wiki says 20 tiles, but the code seems to suggest 10. does anyone know?

Cooperative Play Setting, Everyone Has Individual Bases

$

Thought this might be fun to try and it was a blast, the idea was to make it more challenging than a single base model and it was!   The only rule is that you have to create your own base and transactions are done through a barter system (which is leading to a universal currency).    It isn't strictly a model of "everyone goes there own way", people do go on joint ventures on a voluntary basis.  Watching how everyone sets up their base is enthralling, some opt for lavish setups and designed set pieces, others go the minimalist route with less attention to orderly design.

What was interesting about this dynamic is that players who were conditioned to the single base model weren't always prepared for every exigency as they forgot that they were responsible for everything.    Another fascinating component is the "price" of goods in the barter system, one person values 40 grass as 20 wood and vice-versa.   Gears of course buy you quite a bit.   Gold at first commands a very high price then it diminishes rapidly.    The basics for barter don't change too much though, they are grass, wood,  and silk (not so much twigs) because "farming" them is labor intensive.

The other serious challenge is Deerklops in the early phase, a wrecked base can take 20 days or more to rebuild (especially when you're in the wrong season).

Most valuable item is (as always) the walking stick, and the essentials for the first winter are of course tents, thermal stones, beefalo hats and sewing kits.   Miss any one of these and you workload goes up exponentially.

We are doing this scenario in a large world setting, doing long solo excursions to explore are tricky as its hard to pack enough gear and deal with hound attacks simultaneously.    Players who focus on that too early risk working from an underdeveloped base which leads to trouble later when winter hits.

At the moment we have 4 dedicated players but the server has six slots, in the next week or two I hope to fill the last two.

[Theory] There is a Nightmare Fuel "source" contained within the Atrium of the Ruins.

$

0

My reason for thinking this is, there will be three forms of the little (big) dude:

Overworld - Weak. Loses limbs and fixes them. Does not fight.

Caves - Medium. Fights relatively well

Atrium (soon) - Hard. Said to be stronger than Caves one and should use more of it's animations.

This shows, the closer to the Atrium, the stronger he is.

This would also mean the Atrium is the center of all Nightmare Fuel, which seems to be what truly sustains him.

How does this apply to Charlie?

Charlie on the Overworld (and Caves + Ruins!) usually is just... a spirit. Shadow. Attacking in the darkness, can't be seen.

However, in A New Reign she gains a physical Shadow Form. How does this work? Well, potentially she's even closer to the true source of the Nightmare Fuel than even the Caves.

Perhaps her Throne Room is on the other side of the Atrium Gate, theoretically the true source of Nightmare Fuel.

This Nightmare Fuel would sustain her Shadow Form, and allow her to take the throne (as she did) - What we don't know yet is how she became more... human(?) from being on the throne.

Perhaps one way we could end this is to simply kill the true source of all that Nightmare Fuel.

Who knows.

Just a theory;)

i got Don't Starve and RoG dlc during the GOG spring sale that just started. my friend made me aware after the fact that Don't Starve has an MP expansion and for whatever reason, it is NOT available on GOG, she said she got a free upgrade cuz she had the standard version on steam, and it upgraded to together. all i can find on GOG is Don't Starve, and the Reign of Giants and Shipwrecked dlc's.

Has Together just not been made available on gog yet for some reason? any reason it is on steam and console only so far?

my god when will this update come out already

[Request/Idea] Armour and cargo bag for domesticated beefalo

$

It takes a lot of effort (and dragonpie) to train a beefalo, but so far only Rider beefalo is the most beneficial to tame, however it is still not at fullest potential.

Since Ornery beefalo often get involved in combat, there should be some kind of armour/protection for it, some thing similar to this pic.

As for rider, there should be some kind of "cargo" bag for additional transportation purpose, as an alternative/combination of glossamer saddle. (maybe this is stupid, but I'll just put it here nevertheless.)

Lastly, domesticated beefalo should gain full benefit when travelling on roads/cobblestone, to buff the benefit of taming/keeping a beefalo.

I would like to hear your thoughts as well. What do you think?

Solo Atrium Basing Guide

Thought Ruins basing was easy? Well then this is for you.

My friend recently decided to try out solo-basing in the atrium, which wasn't too unexpected as he is known around the server for solo-basing ruins.  Below are the requirements and steps to take on the journey to the heart of the ruins.  All due credit goes to my friend, Toxiqq (Puppy25).

NIP- Don't package this stuff up in your bundling wraps.

IP- Do bundle this stuff up in your bundling wraps.

Any seasoned player will know where to get the materials needed, and if you don't I wouldn't recommend even going to the atrium in the first place.

Those are the materials required to build a base suitable for up to 2 survivors.

Once you have everything prepared, then the fun begins.  In each cave world, there will be 5(?) pairs of big tentacles, only 1 pair leading to the atrium and back.  They are essentially cave worm holes that you have to defeat to access.  Each time you hit the Big Tentacle, it will spawn smaller tentacles around it, which don't do a whole lot of damage themselves, but hit very fast and can easily swarm you.  They are very weak though, dying to a single spear hit.  You might want to back off and hit each tentacle one-by-one, or at least till you've cleared a path back to the big tentacle.  If you are able to count your hits, it's possible to finish off the tentacle in your last 2-3 hits, they only have 500 health.  Remember, each hit spawns a swarm of the smaller tentacles, so it's not advised to hit it more than once at a time.  Anyways, I'm sure somebody else has a better guide on kiting big tentacles.

Once you've covered enough tentacles that you've found the atrium you want to go insane if you already aren't, because there will be obelisks that block your way if you are not.  Stay on the edges and be wary of clockworks that roam the area.  The atrium is very similar to the labyrinth.  You want to find the gateway room because that area provides natural light during daytime and evening.  There are ornate chests scattered around, but the loot isn't worth the trouble as you won't be finding any pseudo-science stations in the atrium.  Once you get to the gateway, you want to plop everything down.  Things are going to get tight, but there should be enough room for everything.  If you have a spider nest, plop it down next to 3 bunny hutches.  If not, 3 bunny hutches will be able to handle 2 depth dweller nests. Put the remaining bunny hutches in your base and close them off for easy culling.  Plant plants, build structures, and do what you would to a normal base.  At this moment, everything should be down, and you are good to go.  By the time you reach the atrium, it will probably be winter, so berry bushes, saplings, and grass tufts aren't going to be of much use.  If you were fast, you might've been able to get 1 harvest in before the winter starts.  At the moment, there isn't much else to do other than kill bunnies, explore the rest of the atrium, and harvest crops.  At least you have a small base prepared when the new update rolls around. :D

I may have forgotten some steps to the Atrium, I wouldn't know as I never completed a full journey, albeit close.  When I did try it once with my friend, we were ambushed in the Atrium by 3 Terror beaks, which ended our adventure then and there as our armour had broke.

FOUND - Console Command to Reveal Whole Map for All Players (ANewReignBeta)

Following A New Reign Beta, I wanted to quickly generate a whole bunch of different caves and quickly view the map, to observe the patterns in world generation.

Even better if I could reveal the entire map not just for myself, but for other players on the server, too.

I checked a bunch of websites and mods, but couldn't find anything that worked for all players in A New Reign Beta on a Dedicated Server with Caves.

So I dug through the source code (started with Ocuvigil code, lol) and managed to hack it together myself.

Here is the command:

for k,v in pairs(AllPlayers) do for x=-1600,1600,35 do for y=-1600,1600,35 do v.player_classified.MapExplorer:RevealArea(x,0,y) end end end

It is a bit of a hack, it assumes that x=-1600,1600 and y=-1600,1600 are sufficiently large to cover your entire map.

This is true for a world of default size, but if you generate a world that is much larger, you might need to make those numbers even bigger.

Please note that the whole server hiccups and freezes for a moment when you run it.

World reset - any backup?

Please, please, please tell me this is not happening... :(:(:(

First, I am sorry if there is already same topic or if this is not good place for this topic, I am newbie here..

So what happened :(
We've played DST for the last few months, more than 1700 game days and last night our world was reset in the most stupid way, that I cannot even find right words to describe that situation... So now I am so devastated, brokenhearted, powerless, disappointed, sad, angry, inconsolable, desperate.. well I can't accept that everything is lost..

Please tell me there is some automatic backup or whatever... Please tell me there is a way to retrieve our lovely world...

Thanks in advance...

Tips on how to be Courteous to Fellow Players

$
0
0

Now this thread is not meant to call anyone out, nor is it about venting your frustrations over mistakes noobs make. These are tips aimed more at showing ways of being considerate than improving your skill at the game.

I don't have a lot of time for playing computer games, so when I play DST I tend to hop on a random server and help out all I can before I have to leave (sometimes hosting my own server if I can't find one, which tends to be lonely), and I thought it would be nice to share ways I've found of not being a liability and not getting on peoples bad sides. I'd like to see other peoples tips too, in case there's some I've missed or just haven't thought of. So here's mine :3

  • Don't ask where the Base is Right After Joining: This one's simple, but it goes a long way in not annoying people. Now I know that when you first enter a server you want to know where you can come to at night to cook and spam the /dance emote, but be patient. If you aren't given directions or offered an escort, explore, gather some things, get your bearings. People will respect you more if you survive a few days before asking where the base is located. Who knows, you may even find it on your own!
  • Don't Pick Everything: When first entering one of the many randomly generated islands, our brains tend to immediately slip into PICK ALL THE THINGS mode, especially those of us who've spent a fair amount of time in the single player game. However, when playing in multipayer, one has to stop and think, "Hey, if I systematically pick every bit of flint, grass, twigs, and food from around the portal in a ten mile radius, then there won't be anything left for new players!" Please, be considerate. How can you expect new players to survive a few days if they can't even scrounge up enough for a torch?
  • Drop some Flint by the Portal: It's a small thing that'll help out people just entering the server. You don't even have to go out of the way to do it; if you happen to be pasing by the portal and have some flint to spare, just drop some by it, or make a pickaxe to leave behind so they can collect their own. Heck, I've heard of people making a chest by the portal containing equipment like torches, rabbit earmuffs, and pickaxes to help new players out.
  • Don't Enter in Winter or Summer: Pay attention to the day and season of the server you're joining. If you want to join in a difficult season for some extra challenge, go ahead. Just don't expect everyone to drop what they're doing to help you out.
  • If you don't want Strangers, set a Password: You'd think this one would be a no brainer, but I've heard a lot of stories of people joining servers just to be kicked the moment they enter. I assume it only happens when someone doesn't know that they can make a password for they're server, but still, it's rude.
  • Drop your Stuff Before you Leave: Before you leave a server, it's nice to drop your items on the ground so others can use them. If you're playing with familiar people on a server you know you'll be on again, you can keep your equipment. In any case it's still rude to leave with gears, a big stack of silk, or any other important items still in your inventory, selfishly taking them out of reach of the unfortunate players left on the server.
  • Keep Busy: Look around the base. Does it still need some drying racks? A crockpot? Some farms? Do the traps need to be emptyed? Are you low on wood? Look around for things that need to be done, and if you're having trouble finding something, it never hurts to ask. No one likes a leach.

I hope you enjoyed reading through my wall of text and I didn't waste your time. Feel free to post helpful tips of your own, and you might help a few people become a little more helpful. Maybe.

If you want a tldr just read the bold text.
