I know i'm opening pandora's box. But it's time for a heated debate !

Title is self-explanatory. I want your opinion on whether it's appropriate or not to destroy mushroom spawners on public servers.

(also if you are not convinced by a blunt "yes" or "no", try to be more precise, e.g. from what biome ? surface or cave ? for what purpose ? additional early food for the team ? solo boss rush ? and so on)

 

Mods: opinions, preferences, etc.

I've noticed mixed reactions to mods being used here while browsing general discussion. Some of it aimed at character mods; which is understandable. My questions are: what are the opinion of certain QoL mods, certain cosmetic mods, and tool mods? Which do you use; if any? And does anyone use character mods? I'll mention the mods I use as examples, and keep in mind I'm a filthy casual that usually plays alone since my friends are often too busy to play with me.

Geometric placement, combined status, simple health bar, insight. All for obvious reasons. Imperishable thermal stone and smarterer flingomatic (not a typo btw, it's really called that), because I hate that there's a life limit on thermal stones. And last but not least, Gorge Victorian HUD. Because I like the HUD from that event.

The only character mod I use that adds new characters is Reign of Runts. But enough about me, what about you?

Why the Webber Rework doesn't... work

...I was gonna put some funny intro here, but I got an exam tomorrow morning so creative writing isn't really on the menu tonight. Sorry about that.  I'll cut right to the chase instead.

Today's refresh added several neat bells and whistles to everyone's favorite spider-boy, but after a few hours of experimenting with refreshed Webber, I find that the refresh ends up falling flat because it fails to meaningfully address the core issue that has plagued Webber since his debut:

Spiders just aren't very useful.

 

The entire concept behind Webber's character is that you lose access to conventional followers (Pigs, Bunnymen) in exchange for being able to tame Spiders. That, however, is not a fair exchange, because Spiders are pretty weak (and fragile) individually and require the player to spend a lot of meat to recruit enough spiders to match the damage output of a small handful of Pigs, Bunnymen and Merms (a problem exacerbated by the fact Spiders tend to scatter and you need to chase down every single one of them).

So right off the bat, Spiders have a significant disadvantage when it comes to combat. But, unlike Pigs and Merms, they don't have any use outside of combat either. Unless one counts making them kill each other for your benefit.

Oh, and they have a tendency to eat meat the moment it drops on the floor, which makes using them for hunting animals a pretty bad idea.

 


So what steps does the refresh do to improve spiders?

Step 1: It gives you the ability to AoE heal spiders via the Healing Glop and the new Nurse Spider mob. This one is actually pretty great and does wonders for improving the survivability of your spider horde.

Step 2: It allows you to give head armor to spiders. This sounds like a no-brainer buff, because every other fighting follower can wear head armor, and for sure head armor is great for protecting a few select spiders in your army. However, head armor is not cheap and this buff ultimately won't amount too much, because outfitting lots of spiders would only exacerbate the aforementioned issue of spiders being costly to recruit.

Step 3: It allows you to make Switcherdoodles to turn spiders into other types of spiders. This one sounds like it can be a lot of fun, cause "hey, I can create an army of different spiders". Unfortunately, the truth is most spider types feel interchangeable, which makes the switcherdoodles lose a lot of their impact. Nurse Spiders and maybe Spitters are the only ones that really stand out, whereas the other spiders pretty much fall into the same role of "do a little damage at close range". (Heck, Dangling Depth Dwellers are mechanically identical to Spider Warriors.) The Switcherdoodles can also get rather expensive for something that only affects 1 spider at a time.

 

Where does this leave us?

Spiders are still really expensive and, frankly, annoying to recruit. You need at least half a stack of meat to recruit a good amount and you also need to run around and feed each one individually, cause they turn to walk out in random directions. I know that a single meat can recruit 2-3 spiders, but I think the recruitment range could use a significant increase (along with an increase on how many spiders you can recruit per meat.)

Their damage output isn't necessarily an issue in and of itself, provided the cost and inconvenience of recruiting a lot of spiders is improved. Oh and they still eat meat the moment it drops on the floor. They really shouldn't do that.

In terms of non-combat utility, I think giving regular spiders the ability to pick up/harvest basic resources like twigs and grass would be a really unique touch and would also make up for how fragile and unsuited for combat they are compared to stronger spiders. you could then retrieve the resources when you pick the spider up.

Finally, I think giving some small perks to different spiders type would go a long way in making Switcherdoodles more useful and spiders more fun to use in general. For example:

  • Enemies could prioritize Cave Spiders over other spiders, so Cave Spiders can use their reinforced hide to effectively shield their spider friends from damage.
  • Maybe Dangling Depth Dwellers could be immune to the Bee Queen's scream? Just something to differentiate them from the more run-of-the-mill Spider Warriors.
  • Shattered Spiders are in dire need of some love here as well, but, uh, I'm kinda out of ideas. They do technically have an AoE attack I think, so maybe they could capitalize on that somehow?

The true identity of Webber's father (SPOILER)

Let's start from the beginning: in Webber's short film we can clearly see, during Webber's childhood, his father:

It doesn't take a genius to grasp the obvious similarity to Woodie:

Both have caveman foreheads, orange hair and beards, and wear suspenders.

Now, some might argue: But webber's father seems so smart!! Woodie is stupid! Wait and listen...

Back to Webber's short film: as you can clearly see, Webber has become the monster he is after experiencing the "side effects" of Wagstaff's demonic machine:

Webber's father (Woodie) would have become a  Werebeaver  NOT for a generic curse ... but because of Wagstaff's invention too!

What an ironic fate, Woodie became a chimera like his son in the end!

And Lucy? Lucy would be none other than the spirit of Woodie's deceased wife. Which wife? THIS wife -->

At this point, Woodie, since he was a man of great intelligence, went mad: he had lost his wife and child, and had been turned into a monster.
He cut his head, became a fool and an idiot and found in the hermitism of the Canadian forests the only salvation from madness.

It would also explain Woodie's hatred of birds: Webber probably wanted to play with his father to catch them (as well as butterflies and insects) but Woodie, when he still could, never played with him. And the vague memory of it makes Woodie hate anything that flies.

This is the story of Woodie: a man destroyed and mentally annihilated, who sought the only opening in dementia to not go completely crazy in the face of the horrors of life. Congratulations Klei, for having brought Don't Starve back to the horror and nihilistic dimension of its origins.

 

Why do passive spiders still attack walls?

even when under the effect of the new decorated den's, the spiders still violently attack walls. the decorated dens are supposed to make spider dens better for bases, so why is this still an issue. Its a small thing, but if they are to be fully integrated into a base, then they need to stop attacking walls when in range of a decorated den.

Can Wickerbottom have the next update please?

What's Next?
The team is continuing to do some work on content and changes before heading into a new content arc. One of our designers describes the next update as "A new biome that pops up in a couple places on the ocean. It's sort of chill... there are some water spiders." So, there's that. Which is nice. We'll have more details as we get closer to the next update. Have fun out there!

 So, in Webber Rework post developers told us a little bit about NEW CONTENT ARC. While it might be similar to Shipwrecked, i think it will be too kind of tropical experience but not the Shipwrecked integration in DST. Share your thoughts about it and expectations

Spiders Are A Little Big I Think

In webber trailer, even with cover and possibly cage, it's smaller than an elder's head.

I think it would be really cute if they would be a little smaller.

If spiders are able to destroy walls, they should be able to help us farm resources.

Since built stone walls should obviously be more sturdy than regular mineable rocks or trees, I think it would be logical that spiders can help us gather resources if they have such strength.


Webber changes and some potentially unnoticed potential

I want for the Webber players, to highlight some potential "Hidden upsides" that may come from the webber rework, because it's unreleased, anything I say here is purely speculative, but I sure do love to speculate. The second thing i want to do is mention to any klei developer reading this to be careful with being able to pick up spiders and hats. Because I know this community, the first thing they'll do is mutate the spiders, then they'll put helmets on them, then they'll trap them and bundling wrap them for later, because they bundling wrap and save literally everything that exists. You may want to extensively test that to make sure no bugs arise from using a bundling wrap on spiders, as no other creature that can be turned into an item naturally can wear equipment. /bug warning over/

Webby whistle - possibly able to tend to crops as it would be an instrument, also calling out spiders from a tier 3 den and shaving it may lead to large amounts of homeless spiders that would be ASLEEP when morning comes.

Den decorating set - It says it pacifies spiders in range, not the spiders from that den itself, so you could theoretically base even in a queens gathering setpiece safely so long as theres a few decorated dens covering your base, Also if it pacifies spiders you may want to make a pen for spiders with a decorated den in the middle to provide spiders to mutate

Healing glop/nurse spider (if healing) - Very possible it heals webber as well

switcher doodles - We don't know what types we'll be able to make, will moon spiders be available? what about this new nursery spider? I think many times simply trapping the spiders will be far more cost effective than gathering the materials to mutate, now that we're able to transport spiders so easily that is.

Spider changes - A cookie cutter cap would be the ideal helmet for spiders, with higher durability, and the lower protection meaning much less when you take tougher spiders health pools into account,

picking up spiders when asleep would allow you to easily amass large amounts of spiders with a pan flute/wickerbottom and simply dropping spiders while your tamed ones are already in combat would allow you to effectively increase your army without paying these new spiders, as they'll fight anything that hits a spider.

Everyone seems to be assuming the nurse spider is a healer, but its possible it spawns spiders similar to a spider queen but at a slower rate: aka a nursery spider, until its released we cant be sure.

I partly wanted to express my own thoughts, but mostly I want to hear what you guys think of each individual change, and how it may affect playing webber as a whole.

Webber's Character Refresh Coming Next Week!

A long time ago, before “he” and “he” became “we”, there was a young boy and a monster whose ill-fated meeting would leave them both forever changed. Though Webber's two halves didn't exactly start off on the right foot, he has since grown quite comfortable in his combined state, and takes some solace in the fact that he’ll never truly be alone again.

Webber's character refresh arrives next week - Thursday June 24th (PDT).

Here are the details. 

  • Webber can now craft a Webby Whistle to help him control his Spiders. When used the whistle can:
    • Wake spiders up
    • Summon spiders from dens
    • Put following spiders in “defensive” mode
  • Webber can craft the Shoo Box, which dismisses following Spiders and pacifies attacking ones. Can only be used by Webber.
  • Webber can craft a Den Decorating Set. Once decorated the Spider Den will pacify the Spiders in range and make them friendly towards regular players
  • Webber can craft a Healing Glop, an AOE healing item that only affects spiders
  • Webber can craft Switcher Doodles which mutate spiders into a different type once fed to them
  • Spider Changes:
    • Spiders can wear hats now
    • Spiders can be put in the inventory from traps or by Webber when they’re asleep
    • Attack is no longer the default action against spiders when playing as Webber
  • Webber can sleep inside Tier 3 dens now
  • Webber can shave dens down to downgrade them
  • Webber gets a speed boost when on sticky ground
  • The Spiderqueen now spawns a new type of Spider: the Nurse Spider

Of course as always, we will also have a new animated short, new skins and we'll add a new item to the Nautical Collection streaming drops as well.

We are still adding more people into the new Klei Advocates program. We will have more information on that next week as well. 

One last thing. The "big pile o' spool" is now available on Klei Rewards. You can now buy 1500 spool for 4000 Klei points. Don't spend all your spool right away though, new skins are coming next week! Oh, and here are some points! (expires in 7 days)
