Don't Starve Together Roadmap 2021

Hey everybody. I know many of you have been waiting for this so let’s get right to it.

NOTE: Please remember that the roadmap is provided to give the community a sense of what we are working on and what is driving our decisions and what we are focused on in the coming year. None of this is a promise or a guarantee. We always prioritize quality over deadlines and all dates and timelines are estimated to the best of our current ability. Many long-time fans will know that we often add new things to these plans which often shifts things around a bit, so it is recommended that you avoid scheduling your vacation plans around our dates.

This roadmap is subject to change at any time, but as we have done in the past, we will let you know if any of these plans change significantly. 

2020 Recap. 
As we began the year staring down the barrel of a global pandemic we set our sights on a roadmap that was more structured and potentially even more ambitious than years before. We set a goal of attempting to “have something being launched at least once a month”.  Despite moving the entire studio to work from home we managed to do that pretty much without missing a beat. 

We released four substantial content updates, two character refreshes(and Wes), a new character, we introduced two QOL updates to the schedule, and of course our holiday events. The QOL updates turned out to be a pretty big hit. They let the team smooth out some rough edges and work on some things that fall outside of the normal content schedule. These updates also allow the team to split tasks allowing some of the team to begin working on the next big update sooner allowing more time to be spent on them before release. 

Console support has been in relative lockstep with PC releases other than the odd hiccups here and there inherent to console certification.

All of this while also putting out some super cool shorts that just keep getting better and better in my opinion. 

We don’t like to brag, but we kind of nailed it. 2020 was definitely the strongest year for DST ever, and we’re looking forward to keeping that momentum going. 

That being said - We do think there are some things that need some more love, and we’re going to be incorporating these things in the upcoming content schedule. More on that later.

What’s coming?
We’re sticking with it. A great benefit to how well last year went is that now that we’ve got some experience with this doing things this way, we can really hit the ground running for 2021 and we have a much clearer schedule than we probably have ever had. So, what you are going to see now is probably the most information we have ever put out for a roadmap. 

This is the current plan for 2021. 

  • Year of the Beefalo
  • Three Character Refreshes
  • Three Content Updates 
  • One new DLC character
  • One new summer event (Summer Solstice, like Winter’s Feast)
  • Two QOL updates
  • Holiday events

Once again we are aiming to have something interesting for you every month and we’ll also be doing more Streaming drops and Klei Rewards as well.  

Also
We’re taking additional steps to improve the quality of life for players throughout the regular updates as well. We have noticed some things that can be done to help a lot of players in different ways and we have a few changes we would like to try. From main menu changes to new world generation options, we’ve also been experimenting with ways to help new players to familiarize themselves with the game.

One of the newer things coming up we think many of you will be pretty interested in. We’ll get into more details at a later date, but for now, you can check out this work-in-progress image from the QOL update coming in March and speculate away.

And finally…. 
This isn’t directly related to Don’t Starve Together, but we thought it would be a good time to mention that we are taking a look at the Original Don’t Starve ports. We’re collecting feedback and will be working with our porting partners to address lingering issues that have been hanging around on various platforms. 

One issue we find is a lot of players tend to accept these issues as “known”, and we don’t necessarily always know specifically what kind of issues need to be prioritized because they might not be getting represented in such a way that we fully see them. So if you have specific issues you are frustrated about and feel need to be resolved, now is a good idea to make sure we know about it. We’ll be making posts in the appropriate forums as we shift focus to each port.   

We will not likely ever get to a place where Don’t Starve and the DLC have zero bugs but we would like to get the Don’t Starve ports in a better place. This isn’t going to happen overnight as we need to organize and we can’t do everything all at once, but we thought it was worth mentioning that this is something we are working on. 

And that’s it!
Another roadmap down. I do have one last thing to share though. This is a work in progress image of something we have coming in a future update likely to hit beta in April.

The "???" Ping Issue (personal and dedicated servers)

For some time now, I reckon at least 5-6 months, I've seen something bothersome in general server populace and, more pressing, in relation to friends' personal servers that in past not only were showing the actual ping of said servers, but were good pings, around 60-100 with people from my country (Romania) and ~neighboring countries (Hungary, Turkey, Greece, Poland, Germany, France): now almost all my friends' personal servers show "???" even though, in-game, actual ping still is ~60-100 pings, same with some frequented dedicated pubs. Problem is "???" servers get almost no traction aka no one playing on them, and that's my dilemma (and, by extension, my friends' issue): we get no more people aside original group of 2-3 friends.

We all haven't done any modifications on our PCs, no new modems, new Windows installations/updates, new Internet Security System/AntiVirus, VPNs and so on. At some point the "???" ping just appeared. This happens for both vanilla and modded servers. Checking server list for Co-Op pubs par example (print-screens in spoiler below - Mods plus Password Protection: on/off) reveals around 1/2-1/3 of total existing servers as being "???". It may just be that such servers have a very high ping/unstable connection to be shown like that. Yet, after trying randomly some, in about 1/2 of cases that wasn't the problem - still green-to-yellow pings (50-200 actual pings), only mentioned servers were "???" nonetheless.

I've made a poll to inquired about perceived prevalence of topic's issue.

Likewise I've tried to find similar posts from past and only came up with this one: "HELP Ping shows as ???" - still I know I've seem more in recent times.

Could this issue be caused by recent updates, modifications on how server data is sent out and could that conflict worlds and their settings?

Make pick/axe more useful?

I was thinking today about completely useless items, and the pick/axe came to mind! (Along with the lazy forager, albeit slightly more useful) I really think this item should get a buff. At the very least it should have more uses than a gold pickaxe or axe. In the item's current state, I've never once crafted it, and I don't think I ever would unless I just wanted to flex. Gold tools are much cheaper, and the efficiency bonus you get for using the pick/axe is not worth the cost at all. In my opinion, it should be a pick/axe you can use nightmare fuel to repair, but you drastically lose sanity while using it. Just like magi, this would make the pick/axe a beloved item that would actually get used!

Although this isn't the topic, I believe the same should be done for lazy forager (make it refuelable), but we at least have Electroely's mod for that. It's one of the few game changing mods I actually use. Thanks Electroely!

Bug Fixes:

  • Adding Settings option to disable Moving Head Icons.
  • Fixed a bug causing stumps that decay to remove all the relevant items, instead of leaving one of each item behind.
  • Fixed Bundling Wrap from losing skin information when entering and exiting Caves.
  • Updating legacy Lunar and Valentine skins to Timeless rarity.
  • Beefalo no longer duplicate during a rollback while a player is riding them.
  • Beefalo no longer duplicate during a rollback if the Beefalo Bell is in a backpack.
  • Fixed a crash when attempting to Hitch a Beefalo while not bonded to a Beefalo.
  • Fixed a crash on load if you had Amberosia in your inventory.
  • Fixed an issue causing sketches to always give you the pawn figure, sketches that you gave to the sculpting table that turned into pawn sketches are unfortunately not able to be properly fixed.

  • Fixed a bug causing all sketches to turn into pawn sketches.

What Do You Want About New Character?

As you know we are gonna get a new DLC character.

What do you want he be like in general. IMO he should be Old, Male, Human and be based on Building.

I just had a hound wave appear on the final night of Autumn, they stopped barking and appeared literally a second or so before the day ended. This resulted in the first group of Hounds that appeared including Fire Hounds and the second group that appeared had Ice Hounds. Completely tripped me out for a minute or two until I realised what had actually happened. Game decided I was in Winter halfway through the Hounds spawning so it changed special ones from Fire to Ice.

That was crazy.

Whenever I am bored I like to come up with fun little things that I think would be cool in the game.
Nothing major or all too important, just small things that would be neat to have, be it some kind of item, small feature or what not.

But coming up with these kinds of things on my own is boring, so I'd like to know what some other people think would be neat in dst. 
This can really be almost anything, so long as it's not some huge expansive new dlc or some stuff like that, I feel like this would be a tiny bit too much for this post.

I personally would very much enjoy something along the lines of a custom blueprint kit to create blueprints of items without necessarily needing to prototype them.

First, I want to start with Maxwell's quote

I think Maxwell and Charlie spent over 40,000 years in The Constant. And that is between 1906 and 1910 in earth time. Before Maxwell started taking people from the earth into the Constant. And the first Characters Maxwell Brought into the Constant was Wes, but Maxwell was displeased by Wes poor performance. So Maxwell imprisoned him. This is the list of the Characters that have been Brought into the Constant after Wes. When Maxwell was the king (the list is sorted by order)

Now I'm going to explain why Winona is on the list. My reasons are 
1- Charlie did have a split personality when she grabbed Winona (that means it was before she took the throne) 
2- the design of the portal that Winona tried to fix is a bit similar to Maxwell's Door.
So Winona was just on a different island when Maxwell was the king
But when Charlie took the throne. She Brought Winona to the other survivors.

While the Characters in The Constant age normally. The moment they die their age reset to the point they first entered the Constant. But they have the memories of their past lives.

We know that the dark magic and the Nightmare Fuel can change a person's personality a lot like how William turns into Maxwell after finding the Codex Umbra.
When Maxwell and Charlie were dragged into The Constant "they" put Maxwell on the Nightmare Throne and fused Charlie with Nightmare Fuel. That caused her to have a split personality. A side of her was the sweet and caring Charlie. was mad at Maxwell for what happened and the other side was sadistic and cruel enjoyed seeing him suffer on the Nightmare Throne.


Maxwell was worried  about what happen to Charlie but when Wes died of total darkness when Maxwell was watching him. At that point maxwell know that there is a Night Monster, and it is non-other than Charlie. And aside from the split personality she is fully aware and conscious of what she is doing. Charlie relation to the Nightmare Throne is like Webber relation to spiders. The Nightmare Throne is not hostile to Charlie. Since she is not a fully human like Maxwell or Wilson. 


Charlie can free Maxwell from the Nightmare Throne if she wanted to. But if she freed him and took his place. Maxwell may think that maybe Charlie still cares about him. But she doesn't want him to think that way. So she waited and waited. When Maxwell became bored and wanted someone to take his place. While Charlie does have a split personality, she still has a personality. For example, she rolled her eyes every time Wilson died for a silly reason in the Adventure Mode. But finally Wilson took Maxwell place. In less than a minute after that Charlie went to the throne room, and we all know what happens after that.

Passive Farming - Reap What You Sow Update

Okay, I finally figured out a way to effectively automate farming.  The RWYS update frustrated me a lot because it made farming an incredibly frustrating task that required a lot of time and attention to get decent rewards from.  So, finally, I have created a method for farming massive amounts of food while only having to interact with your crops when you plant them, and then you can just walk away until its time to harvest.

Benefits of this method:
+ One-time interaction with crops until harvest
+ No unwanted spawns of Lord of the Fruitflies
+ All crops grown are giant
+ Very simple, and can be done in the caves

Negatives:
- Does not grow large numbers of crops, so yield is smaller than mega farms
- Requires a little pre-planning (fertilizing the ground 1 time, killing 1 Lord of the Fruitflies)
- Can only grow a limited set of crops, not all crops
- Requires rotating crops
- Cannot be scaled up, already at maximum efficiency


Ok, now, to the method:

Make sure to spawn a Lord of the Fruitflies, kill it, and get the Friendly Fruit Fly Fruit.

The Friendly Fruit Fly Fruit needs to be placed on the ground for this to be passive, but he has a limited range and moves slowly.
He can reach 2 tiles North, South, East and West of him and 1 tile diagonally. Because of this, we are only going to use 4 tiles total for farming.
Imagine a 3x3 tic-tac-toe board.  Place the Friendly Fruit Fly Fruit in the center of the board, and then dig up the 4 corners of the board with Rigamajigs.

Then you will need to fertilize each tile to 100 on all three fertilizers one time.  Do this however you want.

Now, we will start with how to do this in Autumn and go season by season.  
 

Autumn:

Dig up 6 seed holes in each garden plot.
Plant 6 Corn Seeds on each garden plot and water 4 times.
You can now walk away because the plot has all the nutrients it needs, will be tended by the fruit fly, and will only drop to 22 Wetness at the most when the Giant Crops finish growing. 

Now, when you go collect your Giant Crops 3, the compost level is down to 4.  We need to get that back up, and we will do it with rotating crops.

So now, you will dig 6 seed holes in each garden plot again.
Then plant 6 Potato Seeds on each garden plot and water 4 times again.
Once again, walk away for 3 days and return to collect you 24 Giant Potatoes.
The Manure level is down to 4 on each plot now, but the Compost is back up to 52.

So, once more, dig 6 seed holes in each garden.
But this time you will plant 6 Carrots in each (and water each garden 4 times).
Walk away for 3 days, return, collect your 24 Giant Carrots.
Now the plots are each at 4 Growth Formula, 52 Manure, and 100 Compost.

So, start over with a new set of Corn Seeds and keep repeating this process until Autumn is over.
 

Winter:

In Winter we will be using Asparagus instead of Corn, as we are after Giant Crops and you can't grow Giant Crops out of season.

So, lets assume our last crop of Autumn was Carrots, and continue the process.

The first crop of winter will be 6 Asparagus Seeds in each garden plot with each plot watered 4 times.
Leave for 3 days, return and collect your 24 Giant Aspargus.

Then plant Potatoes, and after Potatoes you will plant Carrots, after Carrots you plant Asparagus again, and...well you get the idea.


Spring:

In Spring, we are back to Corn, Potatoes, and Carrots.
Keep repeating the rotation until Summer


Summer:

Ok, Summer is the curveball.  Here we have to change the gameplan as the previous rotations don't work and most Summer crops consume huge amounts of water, and we want to avoid those crops.

In Summer we will be growing Corn, Dragonfruit, and Pomegranates.

So, let assume your last crop of Spring was Potatoes.  Your Manure in each garden is only at 4, Compost is 52, and Growth Formula is 100.

We need to now dig up 8 seed holes in each garden plot and plant 4 Corn seeds and 4 Pomegranate Seeds in each.
Water each plot 4 times and walk away for 3 days.  When you return and collect your 32 Giant Crops, the gardens wil be at 0 Wetness.  Thats okay because only a few of the plants will have gotten 1 stress point, which means you still get Giant Crops.
The Growth Formula in each is now at 4, Compost is 52 still, and Manure is at 100.

So now you will again dig 8 seed holes, but this time you will plant 4 Corn Seeds and 4 Dragonfruit Seeds.  Water each garden 4 times, and walk away.
When you return for the harvest, the numbers will have flipped.  Manure is back at 4, Compost at 52, and Growth Formula is at 100.

So now you plant 4 Corn and 4 Pomegranates again, then 4 Corn and 4 Dragonfruit, etc. until the end of Summer.

When the next Autumn begins, start by planting Carrots if the last crop of Summer was Dragonfruit, or plant Potatoes if the last crop was Pomegranates.

Ta Dah!  A 100% passive Giant Crop farming setup that never requires additional fertilizers, extra watering, or fighting the Lord of the Fruit Flies.


Extra Tidbits:

Potatoes can be swapped out for Eggplants in Spring and Autumn
Carrots can be swapped out for Pumpkins in Autumn and Winter
Dragonfruit can be swapped out for Peppers in Summer
Pomegranates can be swapped out for Onions in Summer
Garlic and Durians suck, but if you want to grow them you can in Spring with a 4 Carrots / 4 Durian(or Garlic), then 4 Carrots / 4 Dragonfruit
Watermelon and Tomatoes suck because they drink water like crazy, when you're already losing 24 wetness a day in Summer from evaporation.  Grow 8 of them on their own plots and use stacks of 5 Ice to water them passively if you really want them.

If you don't want to fertilize everything to max the first time, just fertilize each garden with 13 Rot, 7 Manure, and preferably 1 Growth Formula Starter.  Then plant Corn as your first crop.  This is the poor man's method of getting this farming method started.

EDIT: Thanks to @QuartzBeam for explaining this method of exiling the Lord of the Fruitflies.  "You can exile the Lord of the Fruit Flies indefinitely, simply by spawning him at some remote spot and leaving him there. His Lordship will categorically refuse to go further than 8 or so tiles from his spawn point and will instantly drop aggro and return "home" if he goes that far. And since there can only be one Lord of the Fruit Flies at any time, that "protects" every other farm plot you make from uninvited nobility."

This allows my method to be used on all 8 tiles around the fruit fly fruit, thus doubling the yield.  I found that if you try to expand to all 12 tiles the friendly fruit fly can reach, he does not get around fast enough to tend all the plants, so I would suggest sticking to a maximum of 8 plots if you have exiled the Lord of the Fruit Flies elsewhere.


TLDR:

Put fruit fly fruit in middle of tile and dig 4 farm plots in the four diagonal tiles
Fertilize each plot to max
Water each garden to max when planting
In Autumn plant 6 carrots, then 6 potatoes, then 6 corn, then repeat
In Winter swap out Corn for Asparagus
In Spring, back to Corn
In Summer, Plant 4 Corn and 4 Dragonfruit together, then 4 Corn and 4 Pomegranates together, then back to Corn/Dragonfruit, etc.

 

Why there's no "wounded" animation?

DST characters have its own animation when the characters are hungry or insane, but currently there's no specific animation when the characters are "wounded". For now there's no way to know others HP in vanilla servers until they told you their HP via chat. You have no idea other players are healthy as a horse or at death's door. It can potentially greatly improve the gameplay experience, letting the cooperative players to know other players' condition easily and help them while not spoil the game's atmosphere that much, especially for Wortox players (and possibly Wigfrid, since she has heartrending ballad).

I sincerely hope the "wounded" animation added to the base game. It may not seems to be important, but it would be a massive QoL improvement for those who play Wortox, include myself.

I got a Kittykit reskin and was looking forward to using it, then I realized. My world doesn't have catcoons, none whatsoever, no stumps, hence no tail.

Is there a way to spawn Catcoon stumps? 

Summer sucks

Everything unique to summer exists just to be a huge pain in the ass. It can cause irreparable damage to a world outside of your control.

Sinkholes are just ******* annoying.

Random burning of structures, even off of your screen outside of your sight, is just ******* annoying.

There's almost nothing fun or rewarding about it. The most you get out of it is a lazy deserter, which is pointless for solo players anyway.

In contrast, winter provides so much extra content, all while not being incredibly oppressive for no reason.'

Things can be hard without being miserable. Summer is just miserable. Most people don't have enough flingos to cover their bases, and the time to constantly run around and refuel the ones that cover your mega-base-in-progress. And it wouldn't be so bad if there was at least a big pay off, but summer is just useless for the most part. You can go to the caves sure, but you shouldn't have to avoid your own base... wtf kind of design is that... (also some people don't play with caves)

/rant because some of my non renewable resources just burnt off screen and I didn't notice... #fucksummer #fixsummer

Can't find Changing Resources Setting

When creating a new world, I can't find the Changing Resources Setting. Was it removed? I checked the changelog on wiki and found nothing.

Also if anyone knows, is it possible to  edit the settings from the save files?


Any way to change ocean into land?

A friend and I are at day 900 in our server and slolwy realising that our world gen is not the best. We want to expand but are very limited due to the ocean being so close! Any way to change water tiles into land?

Beefalo bell and domestication

So if you love your beefalo, and you want to properly domesticate it, is there any downside to the bell that it seems attached to? If you break the bond will it keep it’s name and can it be taken and domesticated properly?

Do you know any game mechanic that could not be very popular, you use for your advantage and could let us know?

For example: If you feed a pig x4 monster meat and kill it, you get 2x meat and 1x pig skin; two out of three ingredients to prototype hambat, also, you can repeat the process to get pig skin without destroying pig houses.

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed a bug causing the world generation on windows to behave differently from mac and linux.
  • Fixed another bug causing you to join the wrong shard sometimes after a rollback.
  • Fixed an exploit allowing spider nests, lureplants, and fossil pieces to be placed in the same location over and over again.
  • Spider nests on boats no longer regenerate spiders.


Notes for Modders

  • Added a new system for displaying popups to clients:
  • Mods can add popups with the function AddPopup(NAME_OF_POPUP)
  • Then doing POPUPS.NAME_OF_POPUP.fn = function(inst, show, …) show/hide your popup end
  • And then to show/hide a popup: player:ShowPopup(POPUPS.NAME_OF_POPUP, true/false) if true, shows the popup, if false hides it.

Change Season Duration

Greetings! Very new to the game, my partner and i started a world with shorter winter and summer seasons to try and actually survive (since we're newbs)!!

Few weeks in we now have a small base and some stuff figured out, only to realize we cannot change the season settings back to 'normal' from the server hosting menu.

Is there any way to change it without having to make a new world? Maybe mod that grands you access to it? Or maybe through the files of the game?
