Why We Need Fire Immunity

$

So, this forum is chaos at the moment, to the point where it's practically war against Pro-Immunity and Anti-Immunity. However, whenever I try and argue against someone who is Anti-Immunity, they don't really give a coherent counterargument, ever. So here I am, putting all of my reasons why we need Fire Immunity, along with popular counter-arguments and why they are not valid. Be prepared to see me be a little heated. (ha get it)

Also, the post is segmented into spoiler tabs so they're easier to read.

Perks Of Immunity:
Spoiler

Combat:

This is the point I'm most vocal about, and if Immunity was added (which it should) it would be the primary reason why I'd play Willow more than I already do. Anyways, I have tested the following strat in-game as Willow with Scaled Armor (which gives fire Immunity) and it works perfectly.
How to kill just about anything with Fire:

Step 1: Set the thing on fire (best option is Willow's Lighter, but a torch can work)
Step 2: Hold F until it dies
Step 3: There's no step 3 you did it

The reason why this works so well is because of the mob AI. When on fire, mobs don't attack and instead run around, aka panicking. However, if you are constantly attacking a panicking mob, they won't run around (because they're flinching to player attacks) and instead be STUNNED until they either die or get extinguished. No other character in the game fills the niche of being able to stun mobs. Yeah, it disallows others to help you kill it or else they'll take damage from fire, but honestly, you won't really need the help.

If Klei reads this, and I hope they do, I'd recommend adding the ability for mobs that are slain whilst on fire (specifically set alight by Willow) to not drop ashes. This is practically the only reason why this strat isn't being used already. If it were added, it would boost Willow's viability by a long shot.

I'd also like to point out the fact that bosses don't panic when on fire, so they're able to attack you. So no, it's not as OP as it sounds. Furthermore, I am NOT supportive of being able to light things on fire in your inventory, because THAT is when it would go into OP territory. However, if there was a DPS cap at maybe around 25-40 damage per second, I'd be all for it.

Sanity:

At the moment, Willow can't really capitalize on her sanity regen when near fire because said sanity regen gives the max amount of sanity when she's in fire, which is something she can't do efficiently without Immunity. So imo, either raise the amount of sanity gained from fire sources, or tick this off as another reason why we need Immunity.
Also yes, dropping 20 items on the floor and setting them on fire gains a stupid amount of sanity and I agree that it needs to be nerfed.

Misc:

Being able to mitigate some damage taken from Dfly and Klaus is, okay I guess. It's not a main focus and mostly just a side effect. Being able to use lava pools for stuff like lighting yourself on fire is really cool, and could be used for some creative strategies. You can also freely cook food on it, so that's a plus.

Fire Immunity Counter-Arguments, and why they are not valid:
Spoiler

"Immunity is useless, you never take fire damage at all"
The reason why we want fire Immunity is NOT to have safe-guards so we don't take fire damage in general situations. Instead, we want it so we can use fire to our advantage, and use strats that are otherwise not possible without full immunity (aka not possible with temporary immunity without taking damage). See "Perks of Immunity" to see how you could use Fire Immunity to it's full potential.

"Immunity is too OP!"
This is the same game that has:
-Someone that does double damage when having a full belly.
-Someone that can generate a near-infinite amount of food with one use of a book.
-Someone that can make an infinite amount of catapults and completely shred any boss.
-Someone that can heal a large amount of the team's HP by killing small insects.
-Someone that can upgrade to 400 HP and becomes invincible during a thunderstorm.

Now, tell me again how being Immune to Fire would be better than every single one of these examples?
Also, lets not even mention the fact that Winona and Wortox (two of the post-rework characters) are pretty up there in the "powerful" category. Why should Willow be any different?

Also, here's a quote from @Mr.Mulk that accurately sums it up.
Quote

"And yeah, I support [Fire Immunity] being re-added, not because fire immunity is some sort of insane OP perk (like so many people are claiming, but suspiciously can't give a good example of how), but because it already existed and was removed for reasons (griefing) that it didn't help satisfy in the slightest, so there's no reason to not bring it back. It's an integral part in my opinion of what made DS Willow so much fun, and since its purpose in DST was a flop (its removal didn't help griefing at all) it should be brought back."

"It encourages Griefing!"
How. Just.... How. Anyone can make a torch (which is dirt easy to craft), not to mention the fact that Wickerbottom is the best "griefer" character with her books. Griefers dont just stand in the middle of fire and let themselves die. This is a very bottom-of-the-barrel argument.

"It's not realistic! She is a human!"
Again, no. This is the same game where:
-Someone can instantly gain 40 pounds when his hunger is satiated
-Someone that can grow a beard in 5 days
-Anyone can heal from ANY TYPE OF WOUND by eating food.
-Magic exists.
-Basically the entire game throws logic out the window whenever it has the chance.

For those that want to argue in this thread, go ahead, in fact I encourage it, that is, if your argument actually has any merit to it. Also, stay on topic I guess.

Also if you want to raise points, whether it is pro or anti immunity, I'll add them to this post.

What if Willow's lighter is refuelable?

What if Willow's lighter could be refueled by not spoiling items such as twigs, grass, or gold nuggets?

At least they are less tricky to deal with or store, compared to light bulbs.

Is allowing skins for single player good idea?

$

There is DST skins mod for single player and it would work fine, but there is problem. Don't Starve has coop mod and if developed further can be almost like multiplayer with Parsec. Parsec is software that make local coop games online. If single player can be coop with Parsec, then with more features to coop mod, you can have all multiplayer features plus DLC content owned by one player. All that needs happen is for coop mod to allow multiple screens render, process multiple world if a player is there and add more player support. Simulate dedicated server and some DST mechanics probably not that hard either. Add Parsec to the mix and DST not relevant anymore because single player has more DLC content.

Another Willow rework idea

I believe that the Willow rework should focus more on her pyroMANIAC side, she is by far the most insane of all the characters and because of that her playstyle should revolve around staying insane instead of avoding it.

While sane she should have less bonus stats ( the fire immunity, resistance to overheat etc...)  and fire, instead of rising her sanity should decrease it because being near fire woud make her obsession with it more intense.

While insane she would get a huge fire related buff like being fully inmune to it, being able to catch in fire and making her target catch on fire too etc.. this would also make Bernie have a bigger synergy with Willow protecting her from the shadows while she has fun with her fire and raising her sanity when the player is done.

Of course something has to be done with the insanity noises that many players can`t stand (myself included), she could get her own insanity noises and screen filter (they could be fire based like ashes dissipating or flames flickering I dunno).

I think something that could increase the value of Willow for her team could be making some weaker explosives that wouldn´t catch anything on fire but could serve for area damage, maybe a version of the flask from the Forge and some firecrackers that could serve as traps to stun lock enemys and that will not affect Willow as long as she is insane.

TL DR: Willow should get benefits for being insane and some cool explosives to share with her team.

Outside of obtaining new Characters and character refreshes, what do you feel the game is missing and new content should focus on?

What if teenbird make tallbird nest for the first time when fully grown up?

I take a pity on new-comers of dst when they try to incubate a tallbird egg because their effort will become void.

So I suggest: what if the smallbird(teenbird) can make a tallbird nest for the first time when they're finally grown up to tallbird?

As I know, The natural tallbird nest is flammable and does not respawn, so the tallbird can extinct at some point. I think my suggestion also can be a solution to this problem.

What's your opinion, everyone?

My personal opinion on Willow update, without the dumpster fire.

Hello there, if i recall correctly, this should be the first time i'm writing down on klei forums. I'm a don't starve together player for give or take 2000 hours and i've been lovingly playing the game for a good few years now. I've been watching the dumpster fire about all this Willow update and I think it's time i should speak my mind as well.

As her title suggests, willow is supposed to be a pyromaniac. However, given the nature of fire in don't starve, it can be quite volatile and unreliable. Burning mobs as a means to attack usually nets in burnt loot. How can we fit a pyromaniac in in such a scenario?

Let's start with the innate abilities. If any of you ever been to a bakery, you should notice how people who work in those places don't mind the heat at all. I think this "reverse insulation" concept is a good idea to start with, making our little pyromancer wade through summer a little easier. However, reverse insulation also means the cold will be a bit more punishing on her. This also means that she needs a mean to go through winter. I don't think she needs something like complete fire invulnerability, since i believe that making a character immune to the game's mechanics can be pretty lazy. She also has to bring along something that will benefit her entire team, doesn't she?

Enter the scaly lantern. Let us give the lady an exclusive craftable lantern, an upgrade from her starter lighter. A lantern that can provide heat and light, has a better light radius and fuel efficiency. This lantern would require dragon scales and her lighter to craft, maybe toss one or two red gems in there as well, why not. It would need coal instead of lightbulbs. A situational (can't be used in summer due to heat emission), fair to make in exchange of it's benefits (requires dragon scales to make) and strong item that can be used by everyone. and no. you can't cook with it.

As for bernie, instead of equipping it, why not make willow hug it to regain sanity? Imagine an animation where willow stops what she's doing, pulls bernie out and hugs it, regaining a fair bit of sanity while using durability. Another good way for her to contribute to the team can be letting this ability to be used by everyone. I don't suggest making bernie duplicates though, only one that gets drained on every usage and needs regular repairs. The "brave teddy bear who fights off mobs while it's owner is insane" part can stay though. I've never thought deeply on that aspect, though i was thinking on making bernie a bit protective like how annie and tibbers are in league of legends lore.

These were a few thoughts i had during our discussion with my good friend Versus, who also encouraged me to speak my mind here. I've heard that klei was more active here, given this place is their domain. I sincerely hope that the proposed changes were just bait for us to speak our minds. Anyway, these are just one man's opinion.

I like polls to get an idea of how people feel about changes to characters like Wheeler or Winona, so here's one for the Willow refresh.

What will Willow’s new skin be?

On the topics of Willow’s rework, what do you think her new skin will be?

From the screenshot we got in the update thread, I’m leaning towards the “orphan” skin.

Some people are using bot accounts to collect skins from drops

There is a private steam group which as of now has 286 members. Nearly all of the group's members have same profile pictures, almost same names and all of them play Don't Starve Together. There is a password locked server in game named 'doogworl' which belongs to them, and 20 of group's members play on it. It has an auto gift opener mod enabled, and this allows for easy skin farming behind which there is most likely a single person. Can something be done about this?

"Fiery Weapons:" an addition for Willow's rebalance (no pyro)

this idea started in conversation with @Pop Guy about Willow's rebalance ideas:

Pop Guy's initial idea:

But if, finally, Willow could even build "fiery" versions of the basic weapons?
Nothing particularly convoluted or complex: it would be enough to add a single tab for her, the "toys" tab. Here, combining each basic weapon of the game with a red gem can create an identical variant but with a reddish iridescence, with the same BUT features that inflict fire on enemies.

----

This is an awesome concept. I would add a "charge" mechanic to the fiery weapons so Willow and other players have a visual reference. She could even have some lines of text related to that.

The warmer the weapon gets the more dmg it deals but also the higher the risk to hurting Herself with fire.

That would be cool cuz she is not gonna affect other stuff around her. It would be more like an insane burning wave causing hp dmg to her only or the person using the weapon.

Her fiery weapons overheat the person using it but then Willow should have overheat immunity anyways, which by default makes her the best character to use the fiery weapons the first place.

The weapons will cool down if not used and the charging effect could start again. That could make a great tactical advantage to switch between different weapons to utilize the charge strategically or simply take the hp heat dmg and heal it up.

Her fiery weapons could even be fireproof in spring... Something we already see in SW and obsidian weapons and a great feature for Willow to be the master assassin in that season.

The "fiery weapons" could be a really cool addition that doesn't necessarily are related to the "pyro" concept.. but they are closely related to HEAT WEAVES.

soo what do you think?

If the players can creates skins

Hi, I do not have DST, but it seems to me that it is not possible for the player to create his "own" skins in the game (if it is the case I would delete this subject).  So I had an idea, it would be interesting for the player to make his own skins, for example that he can make a knight's skin with the color of his choice, or wizard's dress.  The player could also "sell" the skins, it seems to me that there are reels in the game, they would act as currency.  What do you think ?

Suspicious Eastern Europe Servers

Hello there,

I just stumbled upon an oddity in the server browser and I wanted to share with you. There are at least 45 dedicated  password protected servers -that originated in Eastern Europe- have strange similarities:

*All of them only have simple map editor mod.

*All of their residents are Wilson.

*All of their profiles are either steam level 0 or private profile. No actual people at all.

Seems like a massive scale skin farm operation to me. Even I, myself idle for skins sometimes to be fair, but this is ridiculous. Just look at the screenshots!
