[Game Update] - Winter's Feast (LIVE 200740, BETA 200744)

The nights are growing colder, and a distinctive holiday cheer has permeated the air. That can only mean one thing - Winter’s Feast is upon us! Take a break from enduring a hostile world to spread some holiday cheer. You could enjoy a tasty sugar cookie and decorate a tree or two… or three. Be wary through… something terrible lurks nearby, ready to punish naughty survivors who try to steal presents. What is it, exactly? We have No-Eyed Deer!

An Uncommon Holiday
New winter skins have appeared to get our survivors into the winter spirit, and for a limited time, the chances of receiving a rare gift have been substantially increased!

Everyone will also get a small set of skins to enjoy, including a festive Gingerbread Chest skin. These skins can be accessed in players’ item collections, but will only be around for the duration of the Winter’s Feast seasonal event - so enjoy them while you can!

Happy Winter’s Feast, everyone!

UPDATE: Last week we released sheet music and lyrics to a "Starver's Carol" and loved the covers people started recording! We decided to have some fun with it and do our own recording! Showcase for tidy bases [2]

Since the first one is archived I wanted to open up a new one. I'm also already busy planning new projects and want to rebuild my base a third time. I drew out the layout for my new base and have some other plans.

Dragonfly hasn't spawned for me after i killed him more than 20 days ago. Does anyone else have this problem?

Feastclops has Klaus' eye?

Notably the solo survivor chest for the Snowfallen skins is a Klaus chest, containing Klaus' antlers on the icey chest, very similar to the Deerclops chest for buying all of the set, for 9.99, however, it also has the red eye, which is odd considering Klaus is "multiated" and does not have an eye. Looking closer at the Feastclops, it's antlers are identical in shape to Klaus, and as we all know it does not have the generic Deerclops eye, leading me to believe this Clops is either related to Klaus, or the result of Klaus' mutilation, presumably by Charlie to upgrade the Deerclops?

Wish Shadow Splumonkeys Were Remotely Fair

Splumonkeys are kind of the most obnoxious and unfun enemy I've ever seen in a game. But whatever, it's funny for some developers to troll their own playerbase.

 

I just had a playthrough that was game over'd in a single moment because the nightmare cycle started as I was entering the ruins, six Shadow Splumonkeys chased me, and I spent four minutes running all over the entire ruins trying to get them off me while gradually freezing to death because it was near winter and the cave rain had not stopped for over a day. So I died, because I literally had no way of surviving; I could not fight them because the horde was too large and would just stunlock me so I could not even attack, and I couldn't stop the damage ticking because anytime I tried to create a fire they would just hit me. And they chased me, for four minutes, through the whole ruins until I died.

What is the recommended strategy, never go anywhere near any Splumonkey areas when the arbitrary nightmare cycle that I technically cannot accurately keep track of without the medallion or a nearby fissure has reached the point where they turn into their Shadow form. So beyond how absurd that is, the recommended strategy for countering this content is to not associate with this content.

 

Don't Starve is a great game but Splumonkeys and especially Shadow Splumonkeys are just terrible, asinine game design which serves no purpose but to frustrate and potentially end the players game in ways they have almost no control of. I exclusively resent going to the ruins because of them. Two design elements you will not see done in any well designed game: enemies that never drop their aggravation regardless of what the player does, and enemies that stunlock players to the point of it not being possible to actually fight back. They combined both of these, into one enemy, then put that in a retail game; obstructing the entrance to one of the most important areas in the game.

If Klei seriously can't be bothered to make their own game fair then could somebody at least create a mod that nerfs Shadow Splumonkey aggravation. I would like the ruins to actually be fun.

Hello i was playing DST recently and i encountered a griefer and he wasnt friendly at all it was on Klei Server tho so i couldnt kick him and i want to ask you Klei

What are we gonna about griefers if there is even more griefers ?

They just come and destroy the whole game with no feelings they even know that DST doesn't have ban system so they swear and destroy others work

then they just disconnect and im starting to think that those griefers don't like klei games at all they just want to ruin them.

This is sad and truthful story which can't be solved maybe in future there will be ban system which will stop them from griefing on servers

Let's erase griefers from DST once for all!

Volt Goats

So I'm not a pro player (still having problems while in ruins) but I'm also not a noob (can survive a whole year, defeat Antlion and Bee Queen). 

I've watched a video on yt a while ago about how to move volt goats in dst.

And my story went something like this:

So I've killed all but 1 volt goats and started to move the last one step by step just like you should. But what happened is that the volt goat started to move on it's own in the direction that i ,,wanted". It ended up creating a heard in the rocky biom and I'm pretty sure that when I kill some of them the rest moves away so they are getting deeper and deeper into rocky biom. 

Then I realized that I've "deleted" a volt goat herd (now it's "glitched" and not in desert) so I've spawned a SINGLE volt goat. It's my third summer and when i checked if the goat produced a heard there were so many volt goats it seemed like a second heard appeared. So i separated 2 heards and repeated what I did at the begining- left one heard untouched and other killed with last goat left alive. I've satrted to move that goat away from the second heard. It seemed like I was doing everything Ok cuz a second goat apeared. But now what's happening is that they roam whole desert free.

So here are my questions:
-Maximum amount of goats single heard can have
-The size of a "home" volt goats can roam in
-Does world regen also regen volt goats?
 

Ps. My world can also be gliched as I don't have any catcoons even tho they're set to defeault

I am of the opinion Woodie is 8-12, as evidenced by the fact he has an imaginary friend & celebrates Thanksgiving at the wrong time.

 

There is no evidence Woodie is older, so is it wrong for me to make my R34 Woodie? 

 

On another note, how old is Lucy? Maybe she is the one that is too young here.


My DST Has Become Useless, Please Help

I tried to start a dedicated server, I was having trouble and decided that my computer probably wasn't up to the task so I deleted all of the files that involved the creation of a dedicated servers and tried to make a new world. Upon creating this world it came up with an error reading, Issue Starting Up Dedicated Server with an error code, when I tried to run one of my older worlds(created before I attempted making a dedicated server or even downloaded the required items for a dedicated server.) they all wouldn't start and on the world overview it showed them as a Day 1 Autumn world with the charcter as a question mark. I've tried deleting and reinstalling DST, validating the files, I even went through every single file for DST and made sure there was nothing about dedicated servers(and before you ask yes I deleted the dedicated server tool from Steam) after all of this it still won't let me create worlds. showing the same exact message and error code. Please help, I'm the one in my group that always runs the worlds, and I enjoy playing alone too but I can't do any of this when It won't let me create worlds. 

Winter's Feast Trees

I was playing with the Winter's Feast Trees a bit lately, and there are a few things that I don't understand regarding the gifts we get when sleeping under them (under = near).

I think it's clear that we can get two types of gifts: either 4 food (like hot chocoa, gingerbread man etc), a few trinkets (1 or 2?) and a usually good item (moggles, rabbit earmuffs, beefalo hat etc), or we get only one food item with a charcoal. The latter case looks definitely like a punishment for something, but I'm not really sure for what. It looks like you get this gift if you are naughty (logical...) or if you sleep every night (we shouldn't abuse Klaus' Charlie's kindness?).

However, I have set up a line with 9 trees, and no matter what, I always get the small gifts there. Maybe if there are too many trees and we get too many presents, they are automatically the worse ones? Does anyone know how this system works exactely, what does it depend on what kind of gift we get? Maybe someone who know how and where to find such stuff in the game's code?

Since the beginning of DST, I was surprised by how little attention Klei gave to the PVP side of the game. I mean, if I remember correctly, when they were first testing out the servers, one of the first things the developers ever did was have a Battle Royale between them. DST is just naturally a perfect environment for PVP, and yet, 90% of the focus goes to PVE. Why?

Which got me thinking of so many things that just feel like missed opportunities. So I made a list.

Hunger Games Mode

I mean...I don't understand how this hasn't been made yet, given the massive popularity of it (look at PUBG). Can't this be like a Forge event? Because obviously you don't wanna split the community with different modes and such.

I feel safe in saying that I think people would like this a thousand times more than the Horde mode that Forge is currently. I mean imagine, you all spawn in a circle, weapons and backpacks full of food and items are at the centre. You either stay for the loot and fight, or you run and try to survive without weapons. The maps could be smaller, maybe actually designed, rather than randomly generated, with interesting structure layouts and such. 

And I think it would benefit from being a Forge event, as you could re-design the game so it's more balanced (e.g: Wolfgang doesn't destroy everyone).

Traps

I get why Tooth traps are player friendly. The number one use for them is for Hound shelters, so they should stay as they are, but what about other traps? The Bee Mine for example. I made a post a day ago asking if people use the Bee Mine at all and it seems to be a mostly unused item. How about making this a PVP item? It would give it a use. You could cover your base with them, or use them as distractions as you ran away from a Might Formed Wolfgang. 

And what about new traps? What about a Bush Trap (Tooth Trap + Bush, it's a seemingly normal bush plant that grows berries, but only the player who planted can pick it, or they'll get hit). Maybe bring back the Maxwell Traps? I just feel traps atm are just such a missed opportunity. 

Bush Hat

The Bush Hat should be re-designed to look like an ordinary bush when the player hides. There's no point otherwise! Player's can spot the difference. Imagine how useful the Bush Hat would be when you're being chased by players, if it actually looked like any ordinary bush and could hide you effectively.

Also, bonus points, if it's changed so that, while hiding, players can pick the berries from it.

Forge

PVP arena. Enough said.

So... The current skin chests for the skin purchase seems to be alive and sharing similar anatomy to Chester but something's off. Perhaps we'll get lore on them?
