I have been thinking about how cool it would be to make cheese cakes and such we have all the means, and RWYS added the gorge farming system so it would be cool to try and cook these recipes

Maxwell says "They" are just watching.
The ancients represented Them as an eye appearing at the opening of the gate.
They are described as custodians of immense knowledge, the eye is a symbol of omniscience.
Return of Them in Chinese is 旧 神 归来, literally, "The return of Gods".
The eye in our world is the symbol of providence and of God.

Tips on defeating Deerclops

Can I get some advice on defeating Deerclops? I've already survived a year, but I didn't fight any of the seasonal bosses and I really want to learn to fight them. I've already died twice to Deerclops after setting this goal and I honestly don't know what to do now. I made sure I had more than one football helmet, had a hambat, but now the problem is my sanity. By the time I get Deerclops to low health, Terrorbeaks start to attack me and make it pretty much impossible to hit the boss. I tried getting in close to hit Deerclops, got stunlocked and that was the end of my latest run. I'm really struggling here to say the least! Also I'd like to know if there any better healing food other than pierogi, they're nice and all but the animation is really long.

I don't understand why hound/depth worm wave mechanics are in the game

$

To me this mechanic is extremely unfair, unenjoyable, and binary in its outcomes: either you're near a killbox and you win easily, or you're not and you're instantly dead.

The only real counterplay thus is incredibly tedious: check the wiki to know what is the minimum period between attacks, wait until the attack happens, then only explore for an amount of time equal to that minimum period and instantly return to your base to wait for the next attack to happen. It seems quite suffocating and sadistic to me.

I know they can be disabled, and I probably will have to because to me they are a failure of game design, but it still makes me feel like I'm cheating to change those settings thus this mechanic succeeds in needlessly inflicting pain upon players.

Why Wagstaff will never be added to DST

Wagstaff is a fan fav character, I like him too, I love the detail in how his voice and appearance get more distorted as he loses health, his nearsightedness flaw is genius, and I love the Thumper, Telebrella and Telepad. There's one thing though I don't like about wagstaff though. He can't be added to DST. Let me explain.

Wagstaff's main perks are his engineering tab, the electrical doodad, and being able to spot hidden dangers. "This would make a great character though, why can't he be added?" said every fan ever. Well. simply put, all his features have been given to other people. The electrical doodad is not Wagstaff exclusive anymore, his ability to spot hidden dangers was given to wurt, a similar engineering tab has already been given to Winona, and his telebrella and telepad have already sorta been implemented poorly with the Lazy deserter and Desert stones. Adding wagstaff is completely redundant as he's just a package of already implemented features. The only features of his that haven't been implemented in some way is the thumper, and his glasses types. And the glasses really only benefit him, and the thumper kinda undermines shadow loggers/mners/shovelers. Wagstaff would serve no gameplay value being added, the only value I can see being added from wagstaff showing up is lore. Because they'd have to change him much more drastically than other characters to put him in. Klei removed Warbucks because he wasn't fun to play, (That and Idt you can get oincs in SW) and Wagstaff is basically a mix of all these features of different characters/items. While I know fans would love him implemented it just isn't worth it.

2021 Roadmap Character Refresh Discussion

When the 2021 Roadmap came out, it indroduced a lot of things, and a couple things that caught my eye were, A: The new DLC character coming this year, but that's a whole new can of worms. and B: The 3 character refreshes. And thats where I'm getting at, since IDK when the next thing will happen, I'm opening up this discussion: Who do you think will be reworked first, why, and what are some things you'd want to see in said rework?

You can go leave comments now, but I am super happy that one of my topics reached 2 pages, I know this isn't like Youtube where that earns me money, but it's nice to know that people are finding my topics.

What got you good at DST?

What was the thing that either really got you into DS(T), got you good at it, or both?

For me, I play on PS4, and I can only play online on weekends since I don't have PS+ at my household on weekdays. At the time I only had DST there, meaning that I had to deal with the higher health enemies solo. I honestly couldn't get past my first winter or spring, because I was horrible at fighting.

To fix this, I sort of just made a world, got a spear, found some clockwork knights, and kited them. I wasn't even bad at it at first, I guess I just had never had the willpower to really try it well. I practiced on all kinds of mobs, got the kite patterns memorized, and now I can kite pretty much anything kiteable. I continued to make it to the point in the game where time is practically irrelevant.

Another thing I think that really drove me to become better at the game was that I really wanted to get my friends into it, but we always struggled through the first winter and lost interest quick. Now I really got them into it so we can share this crippling DST addiction, and today (a weekend day) me and my friends finally killed dragonfly for the first time!

Fire hound on day 14?

$

I was playing on a new dst world, & on my first hound wave I got a red hound, & 2 regular.

I've never seen this happen before, I thought red hounds only spawn after summer?

I did activate the trapped chest/fire wall a few days before, maybe the set piece gives red hounds a chance to spawn in the next wave

Winona is surprisingly strong

I just did a short run as Warly with a friend. He didn't play for quite a while too, so I suggested he might look at Winona and try her new catapults out. When we played a couple of years ago we mostly picked Wicker+Wolfgang/WX, never made large bases, just small utility focused one and went on hunting down bosses and spelunking. We figured we try something else and do a bit of a chill, chaotic run, while trying some new features and stuff.

We based pretty close to Bee Queen so we figured we should try catapults on her. It was already late and we wanted to log off soonish so we YOLOed with super minimal prep, almost no healing foods, no wall to kite the small bees, our hambats were not fresh anymore etc, so we didn't expect to survive the fight, and obviously didn't.

Now what surprised us is that her catapults actually did some good work during the fight. They were pretty cheap to make and did short work of the small bees rather quickly, probably because of the AoE. He put down 5 of them I think and one generator. Another surprise: The monsters didn't attack the catapults so we just kited the small bees into the cross fire and they died off rather quickly.

I think those things are super useful for that specific fight, maybe for Dragonfly too and possibly other monsters and bosses that you spawn at a specific place such as Fuelweaver, maybe Toadstool, one of these huge spider infested areas, you get the drift. They aren't as expensive and slow to make as Shootius, but rather cheap for what they provide.

Winona as a character seems to be in a very good place now, she has a very small, negligible downside, so she is easy to pick up and play for new players. Her catapults are attractive for new players who want more protection or for more experienced ones who want to prepare effectively for some of the harder bosses. Cool stuff!

A thread like this existed before but I'm afraid it fell deep into the archive, so here is a new one. You can post funny, odd and terrible pictures that you made while playing DST.

Here are some from my collection:

Love this one because it looks like as if the third bunny from the right (not counting the bunny behind the hut) is throwing the small bunny.

My dear Wolfgang managed to trap himself while being sane and of course I mocked him by taking a screenshot and weeks later finding myself trapped in this too while being sane.

The Starver's Guide to Self-Feeding Farms

$
0
0

This guide is now fully up to date and, hopefully, finalized.

Guess who had a ton of free time on his hands and decided to compile a list of all the "major" crop combinations that require a grand total of zero nutrients to grow, meaning you only need to take care of tending and watering.

Note, the combinations listed here must exist within each individual soil tile for this to work; crops in one tile cannot feed crops in an adjacent tile.

But first, have a free table of farm plant stats as of the latest patch. (The wiki's page had not been properly updated when this was made, so I had to make my own table to figure things out.)

crops.thumb.png.9a6d40b7b573393df5a446dee5a91696.png

Now, on to the possible configurations of a self-feeding farm...

Type A: Three Different Crops in Equal Amounts (1:1:1 Ratio)

layout1.thumb.png.50853413ca4977da51d06d93201dbe3d.png

Note: Apparently, using the snapping till mod allows you to place the plants close enough that they all meet the family criteria, but I am not sure whether this is possible without that mod. Theoretically, it should be, but it would take some insane precision. Also, I replaced my original column design with the one proposed by @kuroite a few comments below.

This is by far the most common configuration. Unfortunately, it's also got a tiny imperfection: the 4 plants at the corner of this layout will always fail to meet the family requirement, meaning they will grow slower and will not become oversized. However, the imperfection does not scale with the size of the farm, so a 10x10 farm plot will produce a max of 900 plants, of which only 4 will be non-giant.

Combinations that can be done with this layout:

Spoiler

list1.thumb.png.23c88e7145f7f0c91878ba3b175e3968.png

Type B: Two Crops in Equal Amounts

layout2.thumb.png.73d37003d78ccb235d76a0619b11b213.png

The minimalist of the bunch, contained entirely in a single tile, with 4 of each plant. I've arranged the plants in L shapes to ensure the family requirement is met. It goes without saying that you can copy-paste that same tile to make this farm as big or as small as you want.

Combinations that can be done with this layout:

Spoiler

list2.png.9b07fd7876e62006243e6d8e738ae1c7.png

Type C: Two Crops at a 2:1 Ratio

layout3.thumb.png.f025a8f745859dbdabce353f07e49757.png

This one requires a 1x2 farm plot (and multiple of that, of course). The minority plants must be facing others of their kind to meet the family requirement and grow giant.

Combinations that can be done with this layout:

Spoiler

list3.thumb.png.d611241b200a799591726816e61928b3.png

Type D: Three Crops at a 2:1:1 Ratio

layout4.thumb.png.6967ebf6c6f6528e940e29f2ac1236d3.png

This one is a tad more complicated than the previous three, but I figured it was worth adding just because of the amount of combinations it brings to the table.

Speaking of which, the combinations you can do with this layout:

Spoiler

list4.thumb.png.425b5c8a6cbfb6146c2123b931ce3615.png

All the above combinations in concise plain text, for those who want to Ctrl+F their way to them:

Spoiler

AUTUMN:

  • Corn + Carrot/Pumpkin + Potato/Eggplant
  • Garlic + Onion + Pepper
  • Toma Root + Potato/Eggplant
  • 2x Toma Root + Pepper
  • 2x Carrot/Pumpkin + Garlic + Pepper
  • 2x Corn + Onion + Pepper
  • 2x Toma Root + Potato + Eggplant
  • 2x Potato/Eggplant + Garlic + Onion

WINTER:

  • Asparagus + Potato + Carrot/Pumpkin

SPRING:

  • Carrot + Corn/Asparagus + Potato/Eggplant
  • Dragon Fruit + Durian/Garlic + Onion/Pomegranate
  • Toma Root + Potato/Eggplant
  • Watermelon + Carrot
  • 2x Watermelon + Pomegranate/Onion
  • 2x Toma Root + Dragon Fruit
  • 2x Carrot + Dragon Fruit + Durian/Garlic
  • 2x Potato/Eggplant + Durian/Garlic + Onion/Pomegranate
  • 2x Asparagus + Dragon Fruit + Onion/Pomegranate
  • 2x Toma Root + Potato + Eggplant

SUMMER:

  • Garlic + Onion/Pomegranate + Dragon Fruit/Pepper
  • 2x Toma Root + Dragon Fruit/Pepper
  • 2x Watermelon + Onion/Pomegranate
  • 2x Corn + Dragon Fruit/Pepper + Onion/Pomegranate

But what about all these other combinations?

I had considered throwing a bunch more layouts into this guide, but all it would have achieved is create a ton of bloat. The above 4 combinations will probably cover all your farming needs anyway. And if they do not, you can find most of the more complicated combinations (that will still give you giant crops) simply by partially replacing one crop with another that has the same stats.

For example, if you got 3 carrots in your setup, you can easily replace 1 or 2 of them with a Pumpkin, provided those are in season. And just like that you have a 3:3:2:1 combination. Which is a bad example, cause I don't think it's actually possible for that to give you all giant crops. :P

That's all, folks!

Does max sanity represent intelligence or resolve?

$
0
0

At first I thought max sanity cap was linked too high intelligence. The key characters like Maxwell and Wickerbottom enforced that assumption. Then we have Wormwood that doesn't display any form of great knowledge, and has a very simple language. How come  its sanity is so high?

Another weird candidate is Walter. Despite having a title "Fearless", which could contribute to resolve, he is just a little boy and I highly doubt he is a prodigy to be on par with the old lady. Because of his f̶o̶o̶l̶i̶s̶h̶ brave act, he almost got minced by deerclops.

If bravery constitutes to max sanity cap then why Wortox isn't at the top of the list? The imp seems to enjoy the chaos revolving around the constant, and even managed to eat a former soul of it's master (Krampus). You may ask how eating your master is linked to high resolve? Well, the imp faced a dilemna of either accepting to kidnap the little beefalo or go against the master wishes. If it was weak/average, they would never revolt and it's a mark of bravery going against the daily routine.

So, what do you think max sanity cap constitutes to?

Who is the most extraordinary intelligence of the Constant?

$

0

Wagstaff: He became rich thanks to his inventions, an entrepreneur of undoubted success but haunted by apparent misfortune; created a sentient android (WX-78), built a fully functional gate for the Constant on its own, is capable of teleporting through space, is capable of creating projections of itself through some unknown form of supernatural technology or power .
Clearly a prodigy, but in my opinion he is not the most extraordinary mind of Constant.

Wickerbottom: Woman of immense knowledge and accustomed to the occult arts, she knows magical formulas to manipulate matter and physical phenomena with the strength of her mind alone. Undoubtedly an extraordinary person.

Maxwell: Thanks to the fortuitous discovery of the Codex Umbra and the study of the code, he learned the filthy secrets of the otherworldly wastes beyond what our limited senses can perceive. He figured out how to summon alien creatures from other dimensions and, to some extent, was able to control them for a while, became rich and famous.
He unintentionally unleashed one of the most terrible earthquakes in recent history and, once he became king / slave of the Constant, by an unknown method he shaped part of the surface of the kingdom in his image and likeness, giving life to bizarre or incredibly dangerous creatures. .
Unfortunately, Maxwell is now a shadow of what he used to be. His mind was broken by those very powers that made him like a God, he doesn't remember much of his immense knowledge. He was probably the most eccentric mind of Constant, now just a sad homunculus. But perhaps it is better to bask in ignorance than to understand the horrendous truth of the world.

Predict the next 2 characters to be refreshed (after the Wes refresh)

I'd like to see people's predictions for the next 2 character refreshes, after the Wes refresh on April 1st. There are in total 3 character refreshes planned for this year.

Also give a reason why if you have a good reason down below.

Edit: I screwed up the post, please pick only 1 option for the first question. o.o

I think some sort of challenge would make it more interesting perhaps a dungeon of sorts where entering leads to multiple random paths and even new bosses.

Giving you special loot each time you do it. It would make for a challenge and give added reasons to keep trying and trying again.

Also harder seasons after year 1. Blizzards, storms, force players to live out at sea and adapt.

Just a few ideas I think would be cool.
