(First of all for all we know the rock den could be a placeholder since it takes some time to add all these things and pets aren't finished according to the part of code that DarkXero posted in the update thread but I'm just gonna give my feedback here)
To me the whole mechanic of just getting pets at a crafting station and having them be completely invincible (they avoid fights so maybe they're not planning on keeping them that way and starvation doesn't seem to do anything to them yet etc) feels out of place for Don't Starve. I'm hoping that maybe they will all get different ways to obtain similar to smallbirds.
Kittykits could be at catcoon dens or following catcoons, varglings could be obtainable from vargs or hound mounds and ewelets from the ewecus. Maybe during specific seasons and all obtained by distracting their parents and then feeding them the items currently needed to craft them to make them start following the player. Glomgloms could perhaps be obtained by giving the Glommer a certain item and maybe to get the Broodling we could just give the chili to the chilled lavae and it would grow into a Broodling with the explanation being that the chili warmed it up and made it grow but it's undersized because it was frozen before.
Also if they would be changed like that maybe smallbirds could be changed as well (has been suggested before I know but that thread suggested making them work like the current pets) to be worth raising and not die so easily and maybe baby beefalos could be changed as well though that would be weird since they can be tamed as adults.
Should the way pets are obtained be changed?
Animal Crafting Sucks
Reasons:
- Mobs should be incorporated into the world through new game mechanics, like for example how Smallbirds hatch from Tallbirds or Glommer travels for the flower. These details give life to world. Crafting animals into existence just ruins the immersion for me, and its just cheap and lacks creativity.
- There's no challenge to it. Recipes are incredibly simple and once you get them you don't even have to feed them. Extra-Adorable Lavae and Smallbirds are engaging because they are difficult to obtain.
- Also the idea that this is the only way we can get skins is ridiculous. But anyway, NEW MECHANICS > SKINS. Skins are nice and all, but they don't make the game.
I really feel like this game is loosing sight on what's important.

Tips on how to be Courteous to Fellow Players
Now this thread is not meant to call anyone out, nor is it about venting your frustrations over mistakes noobs make. These are tips aimed more at showing ways of being considerate than improving your skill at the game.
I don't have a lot of time for playing computer games, so when I play DST I tend to hop on a random server and help out all I can before I have to leave (sometimes hosting my own server if I can't find one, which tends to be lonely), and I thought it would be nice to share ways I've found of not being a liability and not getting on peoples bad sides. I'd like to see other peoples tips too, in case there's some I've missed or just haven't thought of. So here's mine :3
- Don't ask where the Base is Right After Joining: This one's simple, but it goes a long way in not annoying people. Now I know that when you first enter a server you want to know where you can come to at night to cook and spam the /dance emote, but be patient. If you aren't given directions or offered an escort, explore, gather some things, get your bearings. People will respect you more if you survive a few days before asking where the base is located. Who knows, you may even find it on your own!
- Don't Pick Everything: When first entering one of the many randomly generated islands, our brains tend to immediately slip into PICK ALL THE THINGS mode, especially those of us who've spent a fair amount of time in the single player game. However, when playing in multipayer, one has to stop and think, "Hey, if I systematically pick every bit of flint, grass, twigs, and food from around the portal in a ten mile radius, then there won't be anything left for new players!" Please, be considerate. How can you expect new players to survive a few days if they can't even scrounge up enough for a torch?
- Drop some Flint by the Portal: It's a small thing that'll help out people just entering the server. You don't even have to go out of the way to do it; if you happen to be pasing by the portal and have some flint to spare, just drop some by it, or make a pickaxe to leave behind so they can collect their own. Heck, I've heard of people making a chest by the portal containing equipment like torches, rabbit earmuffs, and pickaxes to help new players out.
- Don't Enter in Winter or Summer: Pay attention to the day and season of the server you're joining. If you want to join in a difficult season for some extra challenge, go ahead. Just don't expect everyone to drop what they're doing to help you out.
- If you don't want Strangers, set a Password: You'd think this one would be a no brainer, but I've heard a lot of stories of people joining servers just to be kicked the moment they enter. I assume it only happens when someone doesn't know that they can make a password for they're server, but still, it's rude.
- Drop your Stuff Before you Leave: Before you leave a server, it's nice to drop your items on the ground so others can use them. If you're playing with familiar people on a server you know you'll be on again, you can keep your equipment. In any case it's still rude to leave with gears, a big stack of silk, or any other important items still in your inventory, selfishly taking them out of reach of the unfortunate players left on the server.
- Keep Busy: Look around the base. Does it still need some drying racks? A crockpot? Some farms? Do the traps need to be emptyed? Are you low on wood? Look around for things that need to be done, and if you're having trouble finding something, it never hurts to ask. No one likes a leach.
I hope you enjoyed reading through my wall of text and I didn't waste your time. Feel free to post helpful tips of your own, and you might help a few people become a little more helpful. Maybe.
If you want a tldr just read the bold text.
How to kill Klaus solo (text only guide)
Easier, less expensive way to kill him:
I feel like my method's more fun, but his takes less materials and less setup.
What you'll need:
- 3 Dark Swords (more if you're Wendy or Wes, bring six to be safe)
- 4-5 Logsuits
- Cane
- Healing items
- 1-3 Ice staffs (optional)
- Some kiting skill
Your inventory should look something like this.
Setting up an arena:
Dig out an 8x8 area with Klaus's sack in the middle and place down cobblestones, you can use the speed boost to dodge Klaus's lunge attack and the Deer's ice magic.
First Phase:
His first phase pattern's simple: swipe, pause, swipe, pause, deer magic (alternating between fire and ice each time). You can get two hits in between swipes. The deer won't attack you at all as long as you don't get too close to them.
When he uses the ice deer you can just run around with your cane and you'll either only get affected for a second or you'll dodge it completely, after you've escaped the ice you can get a few free hits on Klaus.
When he uses the fire deer you can freeze it with an ice staff and avoid the lava attack entirely, you won't be able to get any free hits on Klaus this way but it's a lot safer than letting him use the attack.
Sometimes he'll spawn a few Krampus, you can just kite them the same way you do normal Krampus, be careful not to let Klaus hit you while you're focused on them.
Second Phase:
Whenever he falls to the ground you should heal up if you've taken any damage or just wait for him to get up if you haven't.
His pattern's different now: Lunge, Lunge, Magic. Don't try to attack him while he's lunging, just run. Don't freeze the fire deer anymore since that'll just make the fight longer. And whatever you do, DON'T TRY TO TANK HIM, he does a TON of damage now.
After he casts a spell and you avoid it you can run over and get two hits on him, four if he does the roaring animation, but as soon as he's done you need to run so his lunge can't hit you.
After a bit of that he'll be down for real, the deer will break their chains, and you can claim the loot from the sack.
Please consider to improve voting system
Today, I've been playing dst on an official server with other 7 random people. Everything was going pretty good, we made big base, have plenty of food, get ready for winter, spring and summer. After that 2 guys left, 1 guy died and decided to leave to game, 2 guys went for dinner, so there're only 3/8 people left in the server. Suddenly 3 random new guys joined and vote to kick one of us, 3 vs 2 (can't vote to yourself), so he got kick. They keep voting till all of us got kicked. Then they vote to regenerate new world. All hard work has gone... and we can't join after got kicked.
After the world got reset, they left!! what!?!?
I don't mind if they reset and play and start their own new life, I'm ok to start my new life with them. This thing keep happening everyday. I've been playing this game since it was in beta and seen many good ppl complain in game and disappear.
I would like to suggest to put more condition for people to be able to vote such as survive for 5 days+ or have 200 hrs+ playtime or whatever that you think it will be able to fix this.
Hope you consider about this and improve voting system for good dst community!
Cheers.
DST in wifi/local with only one Steam account?
Hi!
First, sorry for my english and my ignorance, I'm French and don't play online haha (but I'm a big fan of DS !). Me and my gf want to play DST with two computers in the same room (so, with the same wifi), but we just have one DST game (and one Steam account). How can we play together? Create another Steam account? Connect with the same account but in a local world? I don't want to pay a second time JUST for that...
Thks!
DST Troubles with Resuming a World
I bought DST for a friend of mine about a week ago and we've been playing together nonstop since. I host a world on my end ( no dedicated server, didn't see the need for one since we're just friends playing. We played with no mods and then slowly I taught them how to use mods and I even incorporated some into the server but none of which are anything more than 'tweaks' really. The stuff that changes drastically I tend to stick away from.
Now on to my error.... I can't resume a world. We'll play to about day 30 usually in game and then take a break or go to bed or whatever... the following day, I can't resume the world. I have had this happen both WITH mods and WITHOUT. DO I HAVE to have a dedicated server just to play with a single friend or two.
>Make world (usually with mods)
>play for 20-30 ingame days
>Call it a night
>sleep -wake up
> resume world (can't, error)
>turn off mods, game freezes or gives the same error
... same thing happens without mods, it'll just never load the resuming world....
Any help?
Christmas Lights
Hello everyone, hope you all doing fantastic!
I'm here to talk a bit about Christmas lights added in the Winter Veil Content. Honestly they look amazing, but i feel 20 days for 1 lamp that you can refuel is a little bit to steep. Currently only Klaus is dropping them, and only after 4 kills i actually got him to drop 2 in the same present.
So here would be my options to fix this issue (Feel free to give your input and suggestions)
1st.
- Make the Non Seasonal Bosses drop Christmas Light as-well. (Dragonfly, BeeQueen, Toadstool). They have big healthpools, require a lot of resources to kill, so i think it would make sense this ones drop the lights as-well instead of just normal Christmas Balls.
2nd.
-Make them refuel. Maybe with Glow Berries if you don't want them to be refueled that easily.
My point is, they look great, and several on the same tree are even better. So if we have this great feature why not make it a tiny bit better?
Best Regards,
Glermz
ps. I really loved this Extra Content patch. DAMN SNOW FLAKES ARE AWESOME. THANK YOU KLEI.
Klei Store Issues.
Has anyone that purchased something from the Klei Store during the Krampus sale not gotten their stuff yet? I received my "Your Package has Shipped" email on the 3rd of December, and it is now the 12th. Also, when I check the tracking number that was included in the email, it says the package is "Awaiting Shipment". I am not sure what is going on, but I have emailed esc toys AND Klei and have not gotten a response in a couple days. So again, is anyone else having this problem? Because i've seen people on here get their pins already. Thanks.
EDIT: Not sure if this belongs here, but I figured "General Discussion" was worthy enough of this.
Christmas Tree thread!
There were some other Christmas Tree pictures in another threads, so maybe it would be nice to see everyone's together in the same place!
Yay!! After an hour running away from frogs rain, I can have a minute to take a picture
My tree might not be the fanciest, but I'm happy as the most!! Yayyyy Wicker pls I told you to smile for the pic
Is Cane Kiting broken?
If you do account for it, people who don't do it greatly disadvantaged; if you don't, then combat is trivial.
What can you do then, bullet hell?
Who do you prefer: Maxwell or Wilson?
Just wondering.
Klaus Boss Battle Guide in a Youtube Video
So I decided to practice fighting this new boss that has been given the name "Klaus". I've found a number of things about this battle worth mentioning. So I decided to make this abomination of a first video and post it here for anyone who wants to learn how to fight this moderately easy boss with only 3 wathgrithrhats... I mean battle helms, a hambat and 6 healing salves. I hope you guys enjoy my first video.
Oh God, the spelling mistakes. I probably should've rewatched the video before uploading.
EDIT: Turns out I was wrong about the Klaus sack. It respawns every 20 days after spawning on days 21-24. Plus his sack also spawn in the biomes deer would spawn, so that's something else that needs to be mentioned...
I also wanted to state some alternate strategies (given you have the items for them) since the one I was doing was just using cheap armor...)
If you have a spare Scalemail and some extra healing items, you can tank his red gem fire attack to make the fight go a little faster.
Jellybeans could be used instead of healing items if you have spare. They make the fight go a little easier if you get hit too much.
Prefab for graveyard fog?
Is there a prefab for the fog that's in the graveyard? If so, does anyone know what it is?
Is there any mod that allows to create the caves in a world already made?
seperate servers really necessary?
Hello guys, i wanted to set up a server with caves and it is really frustrating and problems come and i dont know what to do.
Is it not possible to make caves in one world with the overworld and just connect the sinkholes like wormholes into the game? This would benefit everyone and would make everything much easier. Or they could release a tool which sets up everything autmoatically and you can just enjoy playing.
What do you think about this? is it ok for you to set everything up and search for answers on the internet and forums if something doesnt work? I mean games should be enjoyable and not work.
Krampus Sale!
As you all know, a "krampus sale", has popped up from now till next week. It gives a discount on Klei store items like plushies or little figures.
Has anybody bought or planning to buy something from the Krampus sale this week? If so, share it here!
I personally have been considering buying some blind boxes.
Maxwell Memes: The Sequel
Hey everyone! I noticed that there's a buttload of new memes and no place to put them. Post them here for people to see (and so we can stop clogging up the puzzle thread). Enjoy!
Edit: Also, the memes don't have to be Maxwell themed. All characters are welcome. This is merely a sequel of a previous meme thread.
