dst_roadmap_2020.png

Hey everybody. Just taking a moment to check-in and update you all with the roadmap for 2020.

Please note that roadmaps are provided to give the community a sense on what we are working on and what is driving our decisions for what we are focusing on in the coming year. None of this is a promise or a guarantee. We always prioritize quality over deadlines and all dates and timelines are estimated to the best of our current ability. Many long time fans will know that we often add new things to these plans which often shifts things around a bit, so it is recommended to avoid scheduling your vacation plans around our dates.

This roadmap is subject to change at any time, but as we have done in the past, if any of this does change significantly we will post new information as we have it.

A quick recap of 2019.

2019 was a fantastic year for DST. We added four new characters to the game and we refreshed three more characters. We also had three substantial content updates with Return of them: Turn of Tides, Salty Dog and Hook Line and Inker. We also saw big updates to our holiday events Hallowed Nights, Winter's Feast and Year of the Carrat. During all of that we hit our highest player concurrency record back in April (during a free weekend) and after that craziness had stabilized we just saw our second highest concurrency last week.

For those of you who aren't super into numbers, what that means is that Don't Starve Together is still growing quite nicely. This is also a clear indicator that our plan of character refreshes, content updates and new characters has been working to help keep a healthy community and continues to keep the game interesting for new and returning players.

On that note, we're still very aware that many people want to see events like The Forge and The Gorge come back. While we are not prepared for that right now, we do understand that this is something many of you are interested in and we are still discussing ways to address this in the future.

ReForged and Re-Gorge-itated are both super good so until we have something new we want to contribute, you should check those out.
Re-Gorge-itated: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1918927570
ReForged: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1938752683

Oh, and not for nothing, we took great strides in console support. We didn't always hit the mark, but most everything we can control directly has been working out quite well over the past year or so. We will continue improving console support as best we can through 2020.

What we're doing in 2020

We're going to continue with generally the same plan as last year. More character refreshes and content. However, at this time we aren't going to commit to a specific number of new characters. While the new characters were very well received and successful in selling well enough to help fund development we also don't want to add new characters just for the sake of it. With that being said we are currently in the process of creating at least one entirely new character for the future and we will have more information about them as we get closer to release.

For our update timeline, we expect that we will have something being launched at least once a month. We don't want to do more updates in a shorter period of time so we can be sure the updates are more substantial and interesting. Depending on how that lines up we may see a couple updates during some months and sometimes we may go a little past a month for the next update, but our goal is that you have something interesting to look forward too at least once a month.

Our first character refresh is a bit of a secret at the moment - but you might be able to guess. You will be seeing more info about that during the first or second week of March. For now, enjoy this small teaser from the update trailer we are working on.

whocoulditbe_BG.png

Lore. Yep. I said Lore.

Something we know everybody wants is more lore. I am not going to say much more for now. But we know you want more lore.  It would be smart from this point on to get back into scrutinizing things we put out for secrets. Not everything, but keep your eyes open. Not this post though. There are no secrets in this post. So scrutinizing this post would probably be a waste of your time. Probably. (But really, there is nothing to find here. You'll know when there is something to be found.)

While Maxwell enjoyed hiding little secrets for you to find and seemed to bask in your attention, Charlie has been quite content to work from the shadows, planning and patiently working to put her pieces into play. Things will become much more apparent as her plans become to take shape and she finally takes center stage.

The other stuff.

We're also going to continue doing other cool new things. We really want to work on Klei Rewards more and streaming items have been really popular so we're thinking of new and interesting things to do with these while continuing to support them throughout the year.

And finally.

We're also aware than some players would like us to make more substantial changes to the overall base game of Don't Starve Together and change things up a bit. While this is not a focus right now, we do understand this is something that is being discussed and I invite you to continue those conversations. Don't Starve Together isn't going away any time soon, so keep it coming.

All of your feedback really helps us figure out where we want to put our resources and it goes a long way in helping us decide which direction to steer the ship. You're all a huge part of the growth of DST and we couldn't have done it without you. Thanks for hanging out with us and sharing your fun stories and interesting ideas. Please keep sending us your thoughts and feedback and we'll keep trying our best to build the world of Don't Starve Together in new and interesting ways.

Have fun out there!

A thread like this existed before but I'm afraid it fell deep into the archive, so here is a new one. You can post funny, odd and terrible pictures that you made while playing DST.

Here are some from my collection:

Love this one because it looks like as if the third bunny from the right (not counting the bunny behind the hut) is throwing the small bunny.

My dear Wolfgang managed to trap himself while being sane and of course I mocked him by taking a screenshot and weeks later finding myself trapped in this too while being sane.

Idea of a Don't Starve Live Radio

Ok, so Sometime on Feb,11,2020 (basically yesterday...) Klei made a live radio for Oxygen Not Included on YouTube,  and after listening for a bit I kind of thought, "What if there was a version for Don't Starve?" I can already imagine it in my head! It could be Wilson just casually fishing out on the shore of the constant waiting for his hook to catch something. I thought of other ideas/ scenarios that could work. like at nighttime(could even be a day and night schedule based on real life) the sky would get dark and Wilson could pull out a lantern to light up the area then at day time he turns off the lantern,  Every now and then Warly could show up with some dishes for Wilson to eat that way he doesn't get too hungry while he's out there and Wilson gradually takes a bite out of them and when he's done Warly would come back and pick up the plates, You could even have Season changes and have Wilson wear like a hat corrosponding to the season just like in the Reign of giants Promo! The Possibilities are Endless!!!

Summer Rework Discussion and Concepts

$

0

There have been plenty of discussions about seasons, and I do believe that 2nd+ fall, spring, and even winter (my personal favorite season) could do with some revamping, but summer has the least interesting mechanics despite its potential. I'd like to hear everyone's concepts, and to see discussion of people's ideas here. I'll go ahead and start with some stuff.

Pros:

The summer soundtrack and shading is fantastic.

Ideas:

Wildfires:

Spoiler

As they stand, wildfires are currently just considered a base building nuisance and lead to many players turning the feature off entirely, or avoiding it by just camping in the caves or the oasis. This gameplay loop is not that interesting, but can be easily changed into a nice seasonal danger that doesn't limit gameplay severely. My suggestion would be to significantly limit the amount of things that are prone to the spontaneous combustion, or simply remove it from smoldering man-made objects entirely. If wildfires were truly wild fires, then they can work in a fun way. Trees would be the main source of danger and one would need to plan somewhat accordingly to make sure they aren't too close to valuable structures. Plants like berry bushes would still wither instead of spontaneously smoldering. With them being limited more to trees and nature, their frequency can be turned up a good amount to create a new hazard for gameplay. Collecting wood becomes more difficult outside of the oasis, but you won't feel as restricted in terms of where to base. Flingos still retain the majority of their function, but don't become a necessity. They still prevent withering, can defend sections of trees for log gathering, and defend against fire hounds.

Beetles:

Spoiler

In winter, Pengulls are the primary mob that are responsible for some interesting terraforming and new resource. You can collect plenty of ice, mess around with their eggs, or just appreciate their majesty. Now summer brings a new mob with similar function: the Scorch Beetle. Like Pengulls, travelling around during summer will cause a slight tremor to begin and have pillars of stone rise up along with beetles climbing out of a created crevice. The pillars of stone are guaranteed to drop rocks, and additionally have a chance of dropping nitre, gold, and blue or red gems. They also serve as a spot for Scorch Beetles to lay their eggs. If a pillar has eggs when mined, they will also produce beetle larvae for collection. This can be used in the crockpot or as a crafting recipe for some new unique items and food. Scorch Beetles are inherently neutral, though they will slowly overheat the player if they stand near them, but they will defend their nest if a player attempts to mine their nests. As long as one Beetle and one column in a spawn location are left, the Beetle will continue to lay eggs that hatch new beetles every 1 1/2 days up to a population cap per spawn area in which case eggs will remain dormant. During, Summer the caves will become littered with Beetles as a very common mob, except their heat radiates more strongly while closer to the world's core, making them an overheating threat.

Old Miner (MacTusk Equivalent?):

Spoiler

MacTusk in winter is an important mob with loot that really adds to the gameplay, and is a fun side objective and adds to the environment with the homes. So two ideas, either a large sentient beetle that is more humanoid, or a rock lobster that has come to the surface. Either way, I'm imagining them as a haggardly hunchback miner with a large old and torn cloak over them, holding a paxel (pickaxe, shovel, and axe on one tool), that has a light attached to it, and is being used as a cane to support its weight, along with a miners backpack that has a small light attached to it. A player may walk up to it and offer rocks and (?) in exchange for (?), or they may attack him. While standing up on its legs, it is slow, but it will periodically roll into a ball and charge through the player and then go back into its default form. It will also ring a bell which will cause beetles or (?) to spawn to assist it. Upon killing, it will drop (rocks, or meat depending on beetle or lobster) and has a chance to drop its paxel or backpack. The Paxel is a higher durability tool that adds 5% walking speed, and can mine like a pickaxe, dig like a shovel, and chop like an axe, along with having a small light radius on it (that needs refueling?). Upon reaching 0% durability it will break. The miner's backpack is the same size as a regular one but has a refuelable small light radius. Their home can be in the rocky biome and remain dormant until summer when seismic activity is peaking.

Mountain Soul:

Spoiler

Deerclops is the seasonal giant in winter along with Klaus as the main boss. Summer has Antlion as an interesting giant, but no boss. So, going with this theme of increased seismic activity, a new ominous rock formation has assimilated in the rocky biome. Upon attempting to mine it, it awakens with extreme tremors, growing in size, and beginning the fight. A large antlion like (but much larger) rock arena forms around it locking the player in. The player can attempt to mine the rock or telepoof to escape, instantly causing the Mountain to go dormant. The Mountain Soul fight is one based on good movement and positioning with 3 key mechanics.

1: The Soul begins with 2 tremors that orbit it that cause rocks to spike up as it travels and that quickly come back down along the way. They prioritize tracking the player, but have to move in orbit of the mountain. As the mountain becomes lower in health, the tremors orbit slightly faster and faster, and at certain thresholds (75%, 50%, 25%) will add an additional tremor orbiting it. Any player that gets in the path and is spiked will take damage.

2: The Soul will drop rocks in an avalanche throughout the fight that can be detected by shadows marking the area rocks will drop. The Soul will increase its frequency linearly upon taking sustained damage.

3: The Soul will cause a large tremor to be produced from it to the edge of an arena in a line that after a few seconds will create a crevice that cannot be jumped over. This will initially create a line that divides part of the arena but does not cause much harm. As the fight continues, and more crevices are slowly created, the arena can be more significantly limited. There will be a telegraph that lets the player know when a seismic crevice is coming so they may properly plan their positioning in order to prevent the entire arena from being cut off. If the player is already poorly positioned and has been locked into a small segment, the Soul will not fire another one in that area. They can only be crossed by telepoofing. Additionally, Rock Lobsters that are bound to the Soul and hostile the player will slowly climb up from the crevices.

Upon reducing the boss to critical health, a final stand occurs. The boss will begin to shower the area in an avalanche constantly leaving incredibly limited areas of safety that are constantly changing. The player must find windows to hit the boss when a safe area permits it, and must constantly keep moving in order to not get hit.

I don't know what the total loot pool will consist of, but one potential idea is a molten core. This item functions like a thermal stone with no durability, and significantly longer duration of being hot. It will also function as a campfire if dropped on the ground in terms of heating. It can not drop below neutral state into cold, and it will heat up slightly faster than a thermal stone.

Boating:

Spoiler

Assuming that boats as large wooden structures are still vulnerable to fires (think masts and stuff and not the actual cookie submerged in water), a new mechanic can be the player splashing water from the edge onto themselves and the boat. At the cost of severely increasing their wetness, they can cool off and extinguish a smoldering part while also wetting those parts of the boat and rendering them immune from smoldering for a while. This can be a nice way to prevent the necessity of a flingomatic on a boat.

Guano=Nitre:

Spoiler

Creating another point of access to nitre allows for better opportunity to brave summer’s overheating. Plus refining guano into nitre makes sense from a chemical composition observation (I think anyways).

It bothers me that some of them don't make sense. Like the glass eyebrella. How do you make that from bones eye and twigs. They should have at least made it so you could upgrade the regular eyebrella skin by adding a moonshard or ice to it? Or the klaus cap should have required a drop or fur from defeating klaus or something etc

Question: How do I ask emmet to extend his cover of Log Driver Waltz?

$

In the short "Tree's a crowd", Lord Sludge and Wortox narrator Emmet did a cover of the log driver waltz at the beginning. I would love one of the devs to poke Emmet to extend that. It's a beautiful little ditty Emmet made that I would just love to hear more.

3 years later, and the sandstorm mechanic is still poorly implemented

$
0
0

This is the one weather condition that you can't prepare for before it happens, and when it does, you're completely at the mercy of rng to give you the blueprints needed. You can prepare for literally every other weather condition before it happens, and because you can't do that with the sandstorm, it feels really unfair. So not only do you need to slowly slog your way through the antlion desert to the oasis, you need to waste a lot of time doing pretty much nothing while you fish up the required blueprints. On average, it feels like I waste about half of the first summer doing this.

How it could be improved: Let the oasis begin to fill up with spring rain. Not only would this make a lot more sense then it miraculously filling with water when it gets too hot, it would also allow you to fish up the required blueprints earlier. The chances of getting a rare blueprint should also be increased if they haven't been learnt yet. I know this mechanic already exists, I'm just saying the chances should be higher then what they currently are.

Also, the fashion goggles are kinda redundant. I don't think they should be completely removed (I'm sure there are people out there who enjoy using them), but I don't think they should be required to craft the actual desert goggles. Needing 2 blueprints puts you at the mercy of rng even farther. The desert goggles should instead just require 2 pig skin and 1 gold directly. Needing 2 blueprints to be fished up just puts you farther into the mercy of rng.

Rat Race Music

While racing the rats, the song that plays kept reminding of me something. I finally realized it was reminding me very much of a song from Battletoads on NES. The song for the Rat Race level.

Could this possibly be a coincidence? If so, it's one heck of a coincidence. ^o^;>

Giants atack pattern

$
0
0

Giants have lots of health and huge damage, some of them can kill you with just 1 hit if there is no armor to protect you but when you have killed thousands of deerclops, treeguards, beargers m/goose, etc their damage is not a factor to take in count since they always atack the same, same patter, same times. To fix this for veteran players i was thinking about this:

I dont know if all of you have experience m/goose doing random movements and atacks, this happens when she is far for his nest and makes the fight a lot more interesting so... what about changing the atack patter for weak bosses to random. Maybe this could be include in world generator or when a world stays more than X days.

Giants will have same stats so there is no rework needed and will make then so much difficult. For example bearger: 3 atacks-kite-3 atacks-kite-2 atacks-kite-1 atack kite=0 damage taken but if bearger do his slam atack when he wants or instead of 1 slash every 3 atacks imagine making 2 in a row.

Do you have other ideas? we need something to make giants less tedious without making it impossible to new people (also its more interesting having lategame changes than just complicate it since begining)

Walani, and why she's perfect for Return of Them

$

Spoiler

Before I get into this, I want to get some things out of the way. I have a reputation for elitist and ignorant idea threads as of 2019, and the threads that encapsulate these I look back with really poor feelings, save for maybe the Willow-related ones. In my previous Walani thread I even popped a joke that was in poor taste. But none of this is going to happen this time, I assure you. I'm also posting a thread about Walani again because JoeW specifically said in the 2020 roadmap that they're listening to conversations about new content, and I want it to be known that there's an audience for her to be added to DST.

Im not writing this at midnight like the last thread, so there's actually good thought put into it this time.

Let's talk about Walani. More specifically, let's talk about her possible relation with Return Of Them.

RoT is based on ocean exploration, focusing on the lunar island and other materials / spoils you can gather from the ocean. However, traversing the waters is slow and clunky. That's where Walani comes in. She could be the character that allows players to easily explore (and focus on) RoT content, since she as a character is also inherently based on the ocean, with her being a surfer and all. She would of course require a refresh similar to Warly as her Singleplayer perks/stats are just... awfully bland. However, I am not going to give ideas for said perks and stats, because ultimately she'd be based around the ocean, and only Klei can possibly know the end-result of the ocean, meaning only Klei can possibly know how to make Walani the most fun and balanced.

Before you cry "OP" about Walani being able to b-line towards Lunar Island, Woodie can reliably and consistently find Lunar Island on the first day or two with his goose form. In regards to Woodie not being able to interact with anything while in Goose form, Woodie doesn't *specialize* in the ocean. He is a generalist that has the ability to get to Lunar Island. Walani, on the other hand, WOULD specialize in the ocean, allowing her to reap all of the ocean goodies without the hassle of sailing. Maybe Klei could even make Walani favor a boat base in some way, who knows?

I *do* have some small ideas regarding a Walani refresh. Some are salvaged from the previous thread, some are newly thought up (ily @Axelocke)

Spoiler

*She could make surfboards, big shocker, but could make different versions, such as a Driftwood Surfboard which gives a use to Driftwood other than it's very limited crafting recipes. This version of the surfboard could be faster than a regular surfboard, but could have less max durability. Another upgrade beyond that could be the "Sea Queen's' Surfboard". I salvaged this idea from the last thread mainly because the name sounds cool, BUT it could be used in mid-late game, giving players a reason to keep playing as her. It's crafting recipe could call for, say, living logs and gold?

* Sanity Auras and modifiers would have less of an impact on Walani, possibly both positive and negative. Instant sanity changes could also possibly be affected) The only item that isnt affected by these modifiers would be sleeping, which goes well into the next idea.

* She could create a hammok, which works like a tent except stats increase/drain at a faster rate. This means that you would go hungry faster, but gain health/sanity faster as well. This sorta alleviates the downside of sleeping (and why you don't see pros doing it), which is the fact that they are a time sink.

*For the next Hallowed Nights, she can be a Slurper.

*Not directly related to Walani, but the ocean could have naturally occurring waves like SW, allowing Walani to surf on them for extra speed, but move around boats without an anchor. Waves are already in DST (Malbatross and the gnarwail's horn) so it shouldn't be *too* hard. It may even be a secret planned feature, which I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case.

If you have ideas or opinions on DST Walani, share them here. Let's hope this doesn't turn into a dumpster fire like the last time.

Soooo....what's this?

Alright so i've seen this thing a bunch of times now, as I imagine most people have. I've been wondering what it is. Here is a pic (object circled in white)-

Texty_20200220_182529.jpeg

My wife thinks its the reflection of the sun/moon, which would make sense. She did point out that on top of the "reflection" remaining the same all day/dusk, it is shaded the same as the silhouettes of the fish under water.

While I have seen the object multiple times during the same boat trip before, we just saw it multiple times over an extremely short distance in drastically different positions-

Texty_20200220_182620.jpeg

Texty_20200220_182733.jpeg

(We both had rotated our screens, but note the objects position in relation to the Crockpot)

While I am slightly turning the boat in the first of those 2 pics, it was only very briefly and my course was more or less straight. If you note the day clock you will see the two screenshots happened very close together, and the objects were pretty much as close together as possible without appearing on screen together at the same time.

So what is it? I could accept it being the reflection of the sun I guess, with the possibility of a serious continuity error due to a simple programing mistake, or the difficulty of depicting the reflection of the sun on the water in game. But I feel like it is something else. What, I don't know, but it has been bugging me. Also we haven't tried fishing it yet.

Problem with fps during boss fights

$

Hello, I have experienced weird fps drops during Bee Queen and Toadstool fight. Espacially during Toadstool fight, fps drops are MASSIVE. The longer the battle takes, the more fps drops. When Toadstool was on like 20% of its health the game was almost unplayable and I took unnecessary damage, which, of course, leaded to my death. It seems that simple relog fixes the issue for a while, but sometimes it's just impossible to quit during fight, and I am afraid that the boss will vanish when I leave. Did anyone experienced such low frame rates during boss fights? Is there a solution for this kind of problem?

Decorations, Shrines and Base Designs

Hey everyone! My love for designing is thriving and I've been feeling inspired lately and really wanted a place to share some of the things I've been working on. I love making shrines and designs in worlds whether it's big or small, and adding cute little details to them as well. Most of what I do isn't practical and is purely for decoration.

I was originally posting screenshots of my base on this thread:

But I feel as though my style of basing has evolved into something that cannot be categorized as tidy and I wanted to start a different thread that was for bases/worlds more on the ornamental side like mine. Plus I feel far more comfortable and way less anxious being annoying and posting heaps on my own thread than I do spamming someone else's *nervous laugh* ^-^'

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's a few shrines I worked on last month:

Moon Stone Shrine

Don't think I'll ever be able to do the Moon Stone event ever again because I'll never be able to get a pig so perfectly back in that spot like that ahah, worth it.

Klaus Shrine/Arena

We found every Klaus spawner and plugged them with a firepit except this one, now he only ever spawns here and we fight him on the cobble stone bit to the right. This area doubles as a shrine and a fighting arena, I love it ^-^

[Problem] A Powdercake Dilemma

Here's a question that's niggled at the back of my mind for so long already:

Assuming these conditions:

 - it rains twice (with each instances of precipitation lasting for less than a day) in Autumn,

 - Winter spoilage slowdown is in effect
