[Poll] Which character Klei should add next to DST?
All Released Skins (as of now)
I started this thread back in 2016 as a time waster to catalogue every single skin in DST. Since then I've been revisiting this thread and adding more and more as DST's skin system grew ever bigger into the behemoth it is now. It's now 3 years later and I'm still at it!
As of March 2nd, 2019, this thread has now been added as Featured! Thanks Joe!

Yet another Werebeaver suggestion thread (just beaver with me)
I for one am someone that loves the design of the new Woodie, and I agree with the devs initial conservative strategy of releasing something that is not busted at first, to test the waters.
From game design, it's usually better to start off more nerfed than start out straight overpowered, since the community reacts better to "meh" than to "unfair". Bonus that you can always go up from there, baby steps, and it creates the dopamine hype induced rush of the community when each patch hits.
The issues Woodie have by now are echoed across the community: the issues are in the numbers, not in the design of the forms themselves.
Right now Woodie is just a Wilson that chops fast, because the were forms are rarely useful and situational. People understandably focus on the forms, since it's a new update, but his forms now are "on the side" similar to how willow's Bernie is not necessary to be used. It's different than Wendy, who needs Abigail to function. (Also, please rework Wilson to have some revive mechanics, like in the forge)
The problem with Woodie is a perception and expectation problem.
A lot of hype was built into Woodie, he's a much loved boi by a passionate few, and people had expectations from his very powerful Don't Starve classic version, which does all the chopping and fighting you need, with no downsides, and tons of healing, and weather immunity. In my view his DS form doesn't really fit in the DST lineup, due to its sheer strength at literally everything. In DST, characters should be specialized, and if you want to be ok at everything, you have to be a master of none.
With that said, I offer a few routes of tackling the mechanic balance:
1) Route 1: Remove hunger penalty.
Simple enough, I was surprised to see the hunger being negated. It wasn't even mentioned in the patch notes. I don't even know if that's intended? It seems to use same hunger bar for werebeaver, maybe a coding problem, I've seen worse. If that's the case, don't fire the guy, these things happen. But hunger in DST is the key resource that basically represents time, and this is the first mechanic (apart from rot) that seems to completely negate the slow drain of the hourglass. I think it's bad design to have to do intermittent fasting with woodie and keep him at 10-30 hunger at all times just so you don't loose huge chunks of your internal belly. This is my preferred method, and the community might agree with this change.
2) Route 2: Duration increase twofold, or even 3-fold (for some)
The other way if we want to keep the penalty that steep, is to bump up the bang for your buck. The forms themselves have quite the perks, and the duration increase would be the best for the goose. I would suggest doubling goose time (since it's so good to be fast, and time is money), and triple the duration of Moose and Beaver. This would feel good for the community, I think.
3) Route 3: Halve the penalties of the totems (from -20 sanity and -30 health, to -10 sanity, -15 health)
This might not satisfy the community, but I do agree the health cost of the totems is quite steep, especially if you want to spam the forms. 30 health is a lot. 15 health is two butterflies.
4) Route 4: Remove the health and/or sanity cost of the totems.
Another, (stronger) buff would be to remove the 30 health cost, and even the 20 sanity cost of the idols themselves. I don't prefer this method, since I think the health cost is an important offset balance of Woodie. This would put Woodie in a strong position, since his forms will be very spammable. I would probably keep the sanity cost, and he will become similar to Wortox, always having to be insane to use his perks, but I find that playstyle boring after a while. Some people would like it, some would not. Can you double hit shadow creatures? Depends a bit on that.
5) Route 5: More designs!
This is the more hard work route, which means tweaking and changing the mechanics and designs of the woodie forms in interesting ways in Klei fashion.
Some ideas include:
- allowing transformations to use wormholes,
- making moose charge like Wilbur from shipwrecked instead of right click, by running a few meters than he starts in his fast form stampede,
- making goose form be able to fly over water and over cave voids (but implement a method to save your items if you change outside)
- making werebeaver form actually recharge if you chop enough wood (so you can stay indefinitely, like before)
- making moose be able to one-hit rocks/trees, so that you can gather while killing spiders
- making moose charge deal 2x damage compared to fists (to match the DPS a bit)
- increasing goose speed by a bit (+20% more?)
- making goose be a taunter (like in the forge, when woodie axed the boar), so that goose woodie can become a boss runner
- give goose an attack, with some perks (taunting?)
- make goose have dodge value (if above taunting sounds good)
Other ideas, feel free to suggest on the design part.
These miscellaneous design changes can be mixed with routes 1 through 4, depending on time and need.
Overall, we as the entitled community have a lot of expectations built up, and I feel sorry for Klei, and I know how good they are as game devs and designers, just look where we are.
Art-wise, this project took a crap ton of effort to make, compared to other things we have in DST, and I am sure the devs are disappointed a bit by the reaction.
But know this: The design, coded and art parts are great. It's not you devs it's us. The vocal minority on the forums cares about the mechanics and whether their favorite character can do cool and powerful stuff, which is normal, we're passionate about the game.
Cheers
The True Problem of DST
I've wanted to have this conversation for a very long time now, but I haven't been really interested in DST for a while now until my big man Woodie got his rework today. Feeding off of the want for improvement, I want to bring forth the biggest problem I have with Don't Starve Together: it's not a multiplayer game.
"What?", you might find yourself asking. "Of course Don't Starve Together is multiplayer, I play with my friends all the time! It's the reason DST exists!". Well, I'm simply pointing out that I find DST fundamentally lacks a good multiplayer component, as in it doesn't function nowhere near well as it should. Back when DST came out, everyone was giddy and excited that their favorite singleplayer game had just come out with multiplayer, and the experience could finally be enhanced by others. The problem here is that Don't Starve's formula actually makes it quite lacking in the multiplayer department, only really functioning if you play solely with friends. What I'm referring to is public servers, and the myriad of reasons of why you'd never want to play on them.
Don't Starve's main feedback loop is it's progression system, which keeps players coming back to survive another winter, or to finally go into the ruins and get that Houndootius Shootius they wanted. While this is feasible on private servers, where you can organize times to play with friends, public servers offer no such thing. Usually, your progression only really matters in the one session you get to play for, because your stuff is probably going to be gone once you come back. And sure, we do have wilderness mode, but that doesn't stop other players from deleting and looting your base, nor does it provide a satisfying answer for how death should be impactful. Since you just need to get back to the portal to respawn, the worst complication you'll face is getting your stuff back, and even after all of this, the server might be gone or reset after a few days. Simply put, Don't Starve Together has no satisfying way to enjoy the game in a single session, outside playing by yourself or with friends.
Of course, this need not always be the case. Forge and Gorge both temporarily solved this issue, with the unfortunate complication that they both might as well be different games. PVP is technically a mode which can be played in a single session, but has always been extremely unbalanced, more so since the addition of Wortox, whose teleportation and healing basically make the system not work, not to mention boats. DST Adventure Mode could also solve this issue, but as of now, there's been no plans for such things. Klei keeps making these interesting and unique enemies, locations, and bosses, but they all end up being underutilized with all the other clutter added to the game. I personally think giving something for people who just want to play the game with randos would really help people stay interested in the game, and allow them to have fun while still embracing the multiplayer element of DST.
Woodie Goose Replacement idea
Ive read the forums a little and from what ive seen, most people are underwhelmed with the goose form and not find it that useful.
I also read other people's ideas and made up my own what form could replace it and make it a more worthwhile transformation.
The wereplatypus
It could have a very similar siluette as the werebeaver. It's usefulness would lie in fast swimming. It could also have a water meter, where if you are near to water you have an option to suck up the water and fill your bar. Now when the bar is filled you get a ranged water spit attack and if you swimming in water ofc it automaticly fills up. So the form would be both land and water centered but it would mostly shine in water. Also it could make woodie easier to cross water without having to build a ship.
My oPiNiOnS about Woodie's Rework and How to fix the problems.
So hey beans and means (kek)
Woodie is kinda broken, but don't flame the devs for just making the update not how we wanted.
I would like to give a way to improve the were-forms:
1. All Forms should be able to last longer, potentially as long as player's would want, The Meter won't transform you back into Woodie when it's on 100 points, only at 0 and the Idol's usage shouldn't have a health debuff
2. Moose should regain the meter as he attacks similiarly to pre-rework werebeaver at the rate higher than the drain and it should have a 90% protection because noone will use the form to kite when you are slow.
3. Werebeaver's Gnawing should regain the meter as it did pre-rework but at the higher rate so the drain could still be outdone
4. Goose Meter's normal drain should be slower and could be regained by not being near dangerous mobs ( basically everything with the exception of rabbits, chester and such) at a small rate and It should make Woodie regenerate HP as a way to still utilize the form in end-game where you have tamed beefalos faster than the Goose.
5. Idol-transformation should ditch the sanity drain completely but should take 30-70 sanity to transform.
Anyways Klei, pretty please fix the current Woodie, His forms are pretty meh at the time.
Don't Starve Together for 64-bit?
I have been on the Beta Update for MacOS Catalina for quite some time, and I have not been able to use Don't Starve Together as it is a 32 Bit Application, where as MacOS Catalina no longer supports 32 Bit unfortunately. So is there a planned release for the future for a 64 Bit version? I am desperate
Wickerbottom mains beware! Woodie refresh thoughts
To all of us Wickerbottom mains that don't want character refresh to happen, even more so after seeing what happened to Woodie.
They have announced character refresh for all the characters before they started introducing new ones, meaning even characters that are in a good spot will get character refresh at some point. Its an understatement to say that Wickerbottom is in a good spot, considering how good she is in almost every situation and any good player will dominate with her.
Sending all thoughts and prayers to Woodie mains, hopefully developers sleep for a bit and regain sanity and do some improvements to make Woodie AT LEAST somewhat useful.
I felt bad for all the Woodie mains having to go though years of painful experience, they were almost never a good pick, Maxwell outshined them in gathering wood, plus he was not limited to one resource but could gather almost anything.
I thought that maybe character refresh would make Woodie viable again, turns out i was wrong.
Woodie players deserve more considering in what spot their character was left for years.
There are some delusional people saying that his transformations are strong, they aren't weak but sanity drain makes them obsolete, not even mentioning the hunger. Considering how much you pay to transform and can't even last in that form to make it worth the amount you paid because of the high sanity drain and you also won't be able to regain the so needed sanity like before considering they removed sanity gain for planting pine cones.
Woodie, the new Wilson0.5
Currently Woodie is a Wilson who starts with a bit of a beard and a good ax.
But every full moon becomes a horrifying monster that makes him lose all hunger and sanity.
In short, to play optimally with this new Woodie you have to avoid the full moon and monster meat like bubonic plague.
A half Wilson. A Wilson0.5
One point between don't starve and Dst
So I was thinking will one day klei will join both games ? because honestly when Don’t starve game Together or Don’t starve alone, I always feel that lack content. For example I will play dst and there is an item or a change in a character and whenever I will play alone I miss that character or item, same thing with dst. I think if you put together both games it would become something amazing without having to share content or attention for just one game, because after the cancellation of Hamlet 1.0 worries me that.
this is my opinion
Introducing, Klei Rewards
We are introducing a system that will allow players to collect "points" on their accounts by doing various things like subscribing to our Youtube or following us on Twitter and then use those points to get items. Currently we will be using this to distribute our out of cycle Twitch items rather than selling them as we had previously suggested. This allows players to get what they missed before or just get them without going through Twitch.
The first version of this can be found on our accounts page here: https://accounts.klei.com/account/rewards
In the future we will update the rewards program with new ways to earn more points and pick up cool rewards they may have missed, or even possibly entirely new stuff. Let us know what you think!
Woodie's Design
This topic isn't about balance. I think everyone agrees Woodie needs a buff. I'm more curious about Woodie's fundamental design. Because I've only seen a few people that seem concerned that this new Woodie is so radically different from his old versions.
Should Woodie's established lore matter to his design?
Now, we don't know a lot about Woodie. That's part of the disappointement in the animated short, but it's beside the point. The point is, what we do know, is that Woodie is a lumberjack with a talking axe, and at some point he was cursed, turning him into a werebeaver. Nowhere in the lore is there a hint that Woodie has the ability to transform into something other than a beaver. It seems we are supposed to think he gained this ability because of the recent events around the moon and the lunar island, which, frankly, sounds like a total ***pull to me. There's also the fact that the beaver is supposed to be his curse, but aside from full moons, it's now really easy to choose between staying human or transforming.
Should Woodie's established identity matter to his design?
All the characters in this game (at least the ones from the singleplayer game) have a certain identity. Something to make them stand out from the other characters and make you want to pick them. Woodie's singleplayer identity has multiple facets, like the mystery of how to best manage and wield the werebeaver's power, or even what his secret is to begin with if you haven't seen Woodie in action before.
Regardless, I personally think this new Woodie doesn't maintain his old identity at all. Ignoring the fact that his forms are extremely weak, because that's sure to change, the dynamic between Woodie and his forms has changed. Now that Woodie has (almost) full control over whether he stays human or transforms, there's no mystery in figuring out how to use them.
Having multiple transformations I think also weakens Woodie's identity, because each individual transformation is now less special. Celebrating his new forms just because they're stereotypical canadian animals paired up with a stereotypically canadian character seems like a very superficial reason to me.
Should Woodie have to plan ahead to not transform?
Speaking of Woodie's identity, having to think before you chop was part of what made Woodie interesting. Now I know people are going to disagree with that seeing as that was a big point of the reason people wanted the rework. I understand that wood gathering is an inherently weak niche and one that is already close to cornered because of Maxwell, so I don't think it's unreasonable to want this drawback to be altered or tuned down. However, there is a big difference between to only have to think about something a little and not having to think about it at all, as with the current Woodie.
People of the forums have celebrated that characters like Wormwood and Warly have interesting, impactful downsides. Yet Woodie is now a Wilson that's better at gathering wood, because there's no reason to use his transformations. Yes, I know his forms are going to be buffed to be useable, but that only worsens the problem that he doesn't have a significant downside. Remember, in singleplayer his perks were "Has a lovely axe and a terrible secret" implying that his drawbacks were built into the werebeaver. Now I'm not saying that werebeaver should be something to be avoided, then we'd just be back at his previous DST version. Ideally, I'd want the beaver to be tricky to use effectively and even harder to master, which brings me to...
Should Woodie's design be simple?
I like that the singleplayer characters are simple. A good design should tell the player immediately what they are about. Now that doesn't mean that every character should be easy to use, nor that some characters shouldn't be complex. I'd argue that some characters, like Maxwell, aren't as complex as their designs seem to imply. Also, just because a character is simple in concept, doesn't mean that they are simple to use. Look at wormwood, not being able to heal is a simple downside, but leads to interesting gameplay.
That's what the singleplayer version of Woodie was. Even though the game doesn't tell you what the werebeaver does, as soon as you transform, it immediately becomes clear what it's supposed to be about. There was a clear risk in transforming, but if you knew how to use it you could turn it into an advantage. The last multiplayer version was not like that. Not only did human Woodie have lots of unneeded perks, but the werebeaver was counterintuitive.
Now look at the new version. It's style over substance. The new forms look cool but they don't let you do anything you couldn't before. They add more complexity but they don't interact with each other at all. This is a trend we've seen with Willow's and Winona's reworks too, the team handling these reworks just can't seem to settle for something simple. Someone made an on point comparison to Riot Games (oh god I can't believe I said that).
To sum it up: Should Woodie have multiple transformations?
I personally don't think so. I didn't like the idea when it was first brought up, and even ignoring the clear balance issues I don't think merely buffing his forms would help. Unfortunately, because of how much time was spend creating the art of the new transformations as well as an animated short focusing on them I don't believe this update is gonna get reverted any time soon. Even if he's buffed to where he actually plays well, we have to deal with the fact that the Woodie I and many others loved is dead, and has been replaced with an impostor.
Mom said it's my turn to talk about Woodie's rework
I'll try to not repeat waht's already been said: Woodie's rework doesn't feel that great and is in need of a mini-rework.
The ideas that the rework presented are not that bad but the way they were implemented is. For example Klei had a choice to make transformations long and mediocre or short and powerful. And they went with short and mediocre.
Here're some of my ideas. Idk if they're good or bad but hey at least it's feedback.
-Remove negative effects of transformations. Seriously I'd much rather have fun while being a Moose/Beaver/Goose and then suffer something like -30 hp, -75 sanity and -75 hunger then just knowing that the longer I stay as that form the lower my sanity will drain.
-Choose one of the 2 options I mentioned above. If transformations are ment to stay as they're now then make them last a lot longer or make their durration depanded on the player. Plus give Moose and Goose health regeneration and the ability to fly above map boundaries respectively. If transformations are ment to be as short as they're now then make them a lot better. Turning to Goose should allow you to outrun a charged Wx-78 with a walking cane on a road (plus the flying thingy). Moose should be able to take on Deerclops with only 1 totem and the charge attack should be able to instantyl kill enemies like Spiders and Splumonkeys (Deal 100 dmg)
-Wheather you choose I think that Goose should have the "intimidation buff" of a real life Goose. Basically when you're Goose most of basic hostile mobs will avoid you.
-Beaver needs to uproot stumpts with one gnaw. Cuz right now Maxwell with his puppets are probably still better at gathering wood
-Human Woodie needs some sort of negative trait.
Moose/Goose nest generation
Anyone play DST through a VPN? Has anyone found how the client checks for VPN?
Hi folks,
I've been wanting to play VPN on my work laptop, but the client never goes through VPN. Anyone know how the client acquires proxy?
I am getting "Can't connect to network, play offline" even though browser and steam is all fine.
Company uses a PAC file for reference.
Anyone know how this part of the client works?
Thanks.
A Woodie thread has appeared!
Alright, so I thought about Woodie's rework and I think that it's a good concept, but it needs some tuning, so here are my ideas:
Weregoose:
- Tweak his speed to be above a charged WX-78's with a walking cane
- Give him a hability to swim for better exploring
- Give him a way to attack/intimidate mobs
- Give him a hability to get a speed boost for a short time
Weremoose:
I actually don't have any ideas, except for stat changes, so nothing worth reading
Werebeaver:
- Make him able to gnaw stumps in one bite
- Make him able to gnaw Glommer's flower out of it's statue.
- Raise his damage against tree guards to dark sword damage
- Make him more likely to be obtained when eating monster meat/during full moons.
In general:
- Give the wereforms a way to regain the weremeter/make them last longer.
- Raise the crafting cost of the idols
- Make the idols not take away health and sanity.
- Take away his hunger instead of making him at starving point.
- Give Lucy more quotes
And those are my ideas for Woodie's rebalence, his rework could make him a more interesting character, but the wereforms are quite underwhelming. If you have any other ideas or changes you would make, feel free to comment!
The Wood War isn't over
Yeah I know that the "WODIE" keys has been massacred recently on all our keybords :
But there is once thing I wanted to talk about, and I wonder why this is such ignored :
3 hours ago, thomas4845 said:i think woodie has become the cursed rather than the lumberjack which is my problem because lumberjack should be his main abilities but rather then that i think you just over-simplified woodie down to how you would play it
- The Woodie's Refresh didn't changed a single thing about Lucy, and this is fine cause she's dealing well with Woodie for cutting the trees fast
-
(Btw it is me or she's not very talkative now?) - Now that Woodie have no more Beaver-Meter, you can cute trees just using your axe and not your Beaverform for as long you want to.
- He don't have to eat wood if you don't want to turn to a Werebeaver
Now... With these 3 points, do Woodie harvest more wood ?
Even from the start, you didn't needed to eat the wood you collect : You just have to cut trees with Lucy and keep doing as the Werebeaver, it's was fine
Now it's the same but you only use the axe, and to be more correct, you can still go in your Werebeaver form but this will result in dropping your food to 0, so doing that will simply make you loosing time, the duration of the form can't be maintained, only slowed before returning in the human form.
So yeah, this refresh isn't an improvement for the Lumberjack side of Woodie.
And you know what I'll be about to talk now.
- Maxwell's Efficiency
- Maxwell's Power Cost
Who's the true lumberjack of the game ?
My Feedback on the New Music
Hi. Changes were made to the music in the game for the season of Autumn. This is my feedback on it. Because this is music and I'm bad at this type of stuff, I'll do my best to explain why, even if it sounds like a baby babbling, particularly at me trying to identify instruments.
If I make a mistake anywhere or missed something, please let me know. I'll might also include some artificial gameplay as well to see the difference in actions, but that may take some time and will depend on my mood. I might include timestamps for the music too, but that's also more work.
I'll start with what I like and then what I think could use some improvements. I guess @dansorce is the person of interest for this too? Keep in mind that I'm listening to the music and comparing them while writing this as well.
The Fighting/Danger music:
This music plays when you are fighting normal mobs (aka not boss mobs like Bearger or the Shadow Pieces, which have their own music).
- This is the old sound.
- This is the new sound 1, 2 and 3. (It chooses any of the three at random, but I don't notice much of a difference, which is fine).
Feedback: I have zero issues with it. In fact, I like it a lot more than the old one. It sounds like I'm fighting in the season of Autumn. Nothing too intense, it's just string instruments that sound like Autumn and I'm fighting something.
Same level of intensity as before (you're in danger/fighting) and the more "intense" parts of it has some flutes playing instead of the drum cymbals from before, which still keeps it rather calm/not super intense. Again, zero issues.
Now for the music that I think needs improvement.
The Busy/Working Music:
This music is played during Autumn on the surface when you're chopping trees, mining stuff, digging stuff, and what I would consider to be very important, crafting stuff.
Feedback: I really am not a fan of this new music and I'll try my best to explain as best as possible.
Autumn itself is a cool, chill, and relaxing season to play. Under the old theme, the music was rather slow-paced, it was somewhat subtle, and the choice of instruments makes it rather calm and relaxing (I hear some calm wind instruments, some calm string instruments, a trumphet-like sound here and there, and I think a xylephone?).
It felt like I was frolicking/being busy in the wild in the season of Autumn. Chop a tree/mining something? Rather chill. Make a few boards? Also rather relaxing.
Now, with this new work music, it just sounds so I N T E N S E. In fact, I feel that it's more intense than the new fight music and makes it feel like I'm in danger instead. It also doesn't make me feel relaxed anymore cause of fast paced it is.
Go to chop some trees? I'm working like there's no tomorrow. Mine some rocks? Mine like no tomorrow. Refining some stuff, like rope or boards? I gotta refine a million boards to match the intensity of the work music. Need to work hard, faster, and as efficiently as possible, like I'm working in a workshop or in a city.
It would fit perfectly for Hamlet when you're in town being busy, but not in DST for Autumn work, where I think the calm, relaxing busy music suited it best :'(
I also think the instrument choice is playing a role too. The sounds overall sound so much "heavier" too. It's like hard bells being hit, very deep string instruments, deep xylephones/piano sounds. It's not like the instrument choice from before where everything was lighter in tune and intensity that made me feel like I was frolicking/relaxing.
Oh, and at the timestamp here, the music gets super intense, like something dark and brooding is occurring, even though I'm just making some boards.
And yea, that's my best way at trying to explain it. This was harder to explain cause I'm listening to the music side-by-side while writing this and I'm not good with this type of stuff, so I can only really get the emotions across unlike Lua where I can say line XYZ is the issue. I'll try to provide time stamps/improve upon this post, but I make no promises.
You also mentioned sailing music? I didn't hear anything different from the above music, though I could have missed it or its in the RoT beta. I need to play around with it.
Is there a mod to do that food does not give health back?
I'm trying to create an ultra-hardcore server. I found some interesting mods that add bleeding, head trauma, breakage legs and wrist, which prevent health from instantly regenerating and more. But I would also like food not to give a health (or to laugh about it very little), do you know any mods that serve the purpose?
Ancient gateway and moon theory
After seeing the discussion about the gateway in the data mining thread, I have had an idea about the way the gateway works, as well as some other stuff.
Before we begin, I must say, why does nobody seem to care about Wortox's quotes? After reading through them I must say I think Wortox knows more than Maxwell does!
Anyway...
In Hamlet, we saw the Aporkalypse calendar starting and stopping the end of the world. When the calendar is spun, the world spins with it. When the sun and moon and this other shape
When the Aporkalypse begins, we see there are four celestial bodys the calendar seems to control. The cone in the center is most likely the ground we stand on, (hovering above a shape that looks like the nightmare lock in Maxwell's throne room) while the shapes orbiting it are the sun, the moon, and an unidentified sphere. In the trailer we see this sphere pass in front of the sun, causing a solar eclipse, while simultaneously beginning a lunar eclipse.
This sphere blocks the light from the sun, which normally keeps the shadows away, and changes, or corrupts the light from the moon, causing the shadows to become more powerful, much like how the shadow pieces can only be summoned in the absence of the moon.
Therefore, I believe there are three things orbiting the constant, and most likely they have sentience. @Zeklo said in one of his lore videos "And what better place to stare down at your entertainment than the sky itself?" I believe that the unidentified sphere is the real "Them".
And that brings us to the Ancient Gateway, the thing that seems to have started it all, and is most likely the thing They need to achieve victory.
Many have speculated that the Gateway is powered by the Moon, based on the appearance of opal gems in the Gorge, but the gems never appear in the other keys.
The key in the forge seems to have a yellow gem in it, while the key in the constant seems to have no gem in it.
Let's look at the forge first
In the forge, we see a lot of lava, and the realm is said to be very hot, (The forge smells like "bacon and sweat.") Wortox says "From lava floes bellow this glimmering yellow." when he examines the yellow gems, and the only time we see lava is in the forge and in the dragonfly setpiece, which is brought about by the summer sun. Wortox also says that the forge portal is fire powered, another cross with the sun. This has led me to believe that the "Sun" is more than it seems, just like the "Moon".
This suggests that the gateway has a different power source in different realms, the "Moon" powers the gorge end, the "Sun" powers the Forge, but what powers our end?
To be honest, I haven't been able to find much of anything that can answer that question, but I do have an idea: Life.
We've seen that thulecite is probably made of the remains of the Ancient people, after their souls were sucked out and turned into terrorbeaks. The thulecite seems to be what the key on our end is made up of, and then there is the way we get the key. When the ancient guardian dies, shadows fly out of him and leave behind a giant chest, containing the key. The key could have been charged by the guardians life force the same way the gorge key was charged by the moon.
So that takes care of the power source for the three realms we have seen so far, but what about that third celestial body we saw in the calendar? We've never seen it before, aside from the hamlet trailer when it blocks the sun.
I believe that we have yet to see it because we can't see it. A black orb in the sky, against a black night? Maybe the only way to see it, is if we know what to look for...
Which leads to a biiig stretch. In D&D in the Dragonlance world, there are three deities that control the use of magic, Lunitari, Solinari, and Nuitari. They take the form of three moons orbiting the world, one red, one white, one black. See where this is going? The white and red moons are visible to all people, but only evil people can find where the black moon is in the sky. I think that the reason we can only see two of these things on the calendar is because the last is not visible to us, unless we fill some criteria we have yet to uncover.
My guess is that the third event, the one after the gorge, we will see a key with a purple gem in it, or a nightmare powered gateway. This third event will be based around fighting Them, and possibly a way to "win" the game.
That's all I have for now, sorry for the long read.
