They appear to have been down for the past couple days, anyone got a clue on why?
Klei servers
Winona rework is interesting and I don't think it deserves that many negative comments
Did community complain about original Winona? Yes. Did community ask for a rework? Yes. Did Klei rework her? Yes. Did community like that? Weeeeelll...
And here's where I come into play.
I've seen a lot of people leave negative feedback about reworked Winona and tbh I don't understand it.
The idea of hunger cost when crafting was being thrown around here way b4 Klei even announced 2019 roadmap. And now y'all are complaining. It's her only downside and it's so manageable it hurts. If you're playing with friends then they can craft if you don't feel like using your hunger. I'm playing Winona solo right now and I don't find it annoying. It's a nice counter balance to everything else she has going for her.
Now about that everything. Tape is fine now I guess since you use it in her crafting recipes and it can still act as a sewing kit.
Her catapult- many people complain that it's cheesy. ...excuse me? Maybe it is but then you should maybe consider Wickerbottom's books as cheesing cuz getting like 5 stacks of recources at the cost of sanity seems kinda op. But I guess since it's old news then y'all don't care.
You also need to know that there's a difference between using what game is giving you and abusing game's logic and physics. For example people call using 36 bunnyman hutches against Bee Queen as cheesing. Well the game allows me to do that I'm not exploiting any glitches etc so why it's so bad? I don't see anyone complaining about being able to just fully tank Dragonfly with 2 bone armors. However using lureplants and Hundious Shootious to abuse Fuelweavers lack of logic is indeed cheesing. It's the same as glitching out of the map and avoiding Autrium's dangers. If it comes at a cost and you need to fairly put a lot of time to achieve then it shouldn't be considered cheesing. Heck it takes more effort to do make 36 bunnyman hutches around Bee Queen then getting 6 players with armor and just pressing F untill Bee Queeen is dead.
Spotlight- this one is really great if you're playing solo but I can see why people that play with friends don't like it. But hey it's the same as Wicker's books in singleplayer. End is night and book about volcanos are pretty useless.
Generators- I agree that it'd be better if we could turn them on and off. Well at least with spotlight cuz I agree that it's pretty stupid that spotlight uses power even durring the day. But if devs think it's better this way then I won't complain. Cuz if you're playing with friends then it's pretty easy to just say "hey get some nitre since you're going to get a few stacks of rocks"
Anyway…
Winona's rework definitelly made her more interesting and unique. Her craftables create new playstyles. Is it perfect? No, but nothing on this flying-through-space ball is. Plus you should also take it into consideration that Klei probably uses this rework as a "testing the waters"-kind of method. Seeing what community likes, what it doesn't.
Well that's my feedback.
Is the Chester snap lense discontinued?
The recipe of Winona's Catapult should not change.
Something I like about Winona's catapults is that they change the way the player approaches the game by making them prioritize resources they usually wouldn't. Each catapult takes 15 rocks to craft, meaning the "overpowered cheese" setups take hundreds. Rocks aren't usually something that you're seeking out in large amounts (unless you're megabasing), but some of my friends have even started using moleworm farms to obtain them in bulk.
On the other hand, since it's just rocks, you're able to craft just a catapult or two if you only want to experiment with using them on different mobs. It's really fun to set up a couple near some mobs before fighting them, just to see what happens. After racking up thousands of hours in the game, it's understandable that one might forget that most people don't use console commands and test worlds to find the best strategies for every new piece of content. But when playing with friends, placing down some catapults near a tall fort and desperately running in circles in an attempt to kill the tallbirds can be a magical experience.
This balance of being expensive in bulk and cheap in small numbers is very good design, and I believe it's what the devs were thinking when they chose the recipe.
A common suggestion I've been seeing around the forums is that the recipe of Winona's catapults should require a less common item in place of rocks, that item usually being frazzled wires or gears. Personally, I believe this is an idea that would only make the catapults worse, and I don't think people have been fully considering the consequences of such a change.
From the perspective of an expert player, the recipe requiring some gears or frazzled wires will not make catapults any more difficult to craft. I'd even argue that it'll make them easier for experienced players to craft, since people already seem to love rushing ruins. If anything, it might require an extra slot inventory during the rush for frazzled wires.
But for a beginner? Winona's biggest and most fun perk will be locked behind a horde of splumonkeys, depths worms, and clockworks. You can get either item from tumbleweeds or graves, sure. But both tumbleweeds and graves are RNG-based, with the latter being nonrenewable
If the only options are ruins or an RNG grind, experienced players will be unaffected and beginners will be unable to use the catapults to their fullest. It's important to look at all perspectives when trying to balance a game; players of all skill levels should be considered.
Is There Anyone Making A Gorge Mod?
The Gorge was really enjoyable imo, and now that we know we might never see the event again. I was asking if there's anyone you know that's making a mod so that we can play it again.
Thanks if you can.
Moon florid postern was a mistake
The Winona rework already shows why.
Tryhards are now comparing every character in a "Is it better to just plop special structures down and switch to Holy Trinity?" way.
Bacause right now this can be a legit strat.
There used to be some consequeces that you stick with the character you've chosen forever. Right now you can just switch them like socks cuz it ain't hard to do.
It also cteates umhealthy (imo) playstyle of switching to op characters to do something dangerous (ruins, boss) instead of trying to learn how to do it with character you've chosen
drop history
hey guys.
i was wondering if there is any way to see your drop history
thx
The unintented "bosses nerf" with catapult is actually a good thing
With the recent addition of catapult it's become fairly easy to defeat almost all of the bosses, considering the required recourses are amassed. Thus the outcry over "the new cheese" has been quite vocal for couple of days.
Not arguing here, most of the fights are a joke with this new setup. But this is actually a good thing and healthy for the casual community.
Have you considered how many players actually killed said Toadstools, Bee Queens and Fuelweavers without any form of cheese or abuse? I’m pretty sure the number is about 5-10%. And this is the number of, let's say, hardcore players. What about the others then?
With this new addition more casual players will get a chance to beat those bosses and get the loot, and even get better with time. New content will be here soon so it’s a good thing that more people will actually beat the old one with some not game-breaking mechanics and feel encouraged to explore new horizons. Also, it’s a common practice in MMOs to nerf old dungeons when new ones are out (I’m not favoring such approach though). But Klei actually managed to "nerf" old content without it being watered down, so I think it’s a good change overall.
(P.S. 5 hunger penalty for crafting is absurd, either make it 1-2 or remove it completely)
Theory about Wagstaff and how he might play a big role in the Don't Starve lore
Disclamer: This is all speculation from my crazy mind. I base it off evidence, but at the end of the day we don't know everything and I am certainly wrong about some parts.
With the reveal of the "next of kin" short, not only do we learn how Winona got into the constant, but also what happened to Robert Wagstaff, the found of the Voxola Radio Company, the factory Winona works for, who also made the radio Maxwell used to communicate with Wilson, and create the Divining Rod.
First off, let's just get the record straight: The person who got pulled into the machine as Winona entered the room is Wagstaff. Some people think it's some random factory worker, but if you dig deep enough, you will find the evidence that would prove it was infact him:
Flash back to 6 years ago, Kevin made this post regarding The Voxola radio Maxwell used to communicate with Wilson:
QuoteThe radio is a Voxola PR-76, manufactured in 1919 by the Voxola Radio company of Sidney, Ohio. The radio offered revolutionary sound and reception quality for the time, and was promoted by an intense national marketing campaign. Very few units were actually produced, because the factory was destroyed in a fire only days after production began. Voxola founder Robert Wagstaff went missing the night of the fire, and the company declared bankruptcy soon thereafter.
Wagstaff indeed went missing the night his factory burned now, merely days after he started production of the Voxola radios. Perhaps pulled into a strange realm by strange machinery he created? Let's backtrack a little. The short appears to take place before Charlie took the throne, as she is not wearing her Queen attire and her personality still seems to be overpowered by the shadows. So this most likely took place while Maxwell still had reign of the Constant. It had to have been. The radio's were only in production for a few days, Wilson could only have obtained one before the factory burned down, meaning the short takes place before even Wilson was captured.
Now, why is Wagstaff involved in all this? I think the answer is rather simple: He already researched the shadows and technology/dark magic they protect. That's how he created radio's that had the ability to let someone from the Constant communicate with real world. He had to have obtained the knowledge somehow, as Maxwell most likely couldn't have given him the knowledge without the radio in the first place. If you look on his wall, you'll notice this news paper article, with the design for the radio next to it:
It's a little hard to read the text, but I'm confident it reads "Do evil shadow monsters lurk among us?", with a picture of something that looks similar to a Terrorbeak, eating someone. My theory is, Wagstaff saw this news paper and researched the matter, and eventually learned about Charlie and Maxwell's existance in the Constant, and created these radio's specifically to help theml communicate outside the Constant. Whether or not he knew what Maxwell would do with these radio's isn't known of course (i.e telling people how to make a machine that traps them), but that seems like the more conceivable explanation.
So Wagstaff had already researched the shadows, the Constant, etc and made those crazy radios.. Now, why did build the machine when he likely already knew what it would do? I think the answer is, he wanted to go to the Constant. My evidence? Wagstaff's character description from the Hamlet roadmap:
QuoteNew Characters
Beyond Wilba and Wormwood, we will be adding two more characters to the cast: a globetrotting adventurer lost and alone, and a mysterious inventor who finds himself exactly where he wanted to be...
A mysterious inventor, who finds himself exactly where he wanted to be? He let himself get captured, and let his glove slip off when Winona tried to save him. Why he wanted to be in the constant we don't know. Perhaps he had some sort of plan to help try and save Charlie and Maxwell? Winona definitly was not supposed to get captured, Charlie specfically says she did not want her to come to the constant. We don't know yet.
Thanks for reading my crazy theory. Hopefully when Wagstaff gets added to DS, more light will be shred upon this subject. Wagstaff obviously has some sort of big role in the story.
Game Update 314835, The Player's Change-log!
This is a full list of changes, including stuff klei might have glossed over in their patch notes!
(note: this is only code changes, it would be far to taxing at-least at this moment to go over image and animation changes)
The following items/entities got code added for current/future skinned items:
- Ice Flingomatic
- Bug Net
We actually know what the two skins for these items are,
For the Ice Flingomatic we have the:
Amazing Snowball Juggler, which is a twitch drop(that is presumed to drop next week).
For the Bug Net we have the:
Ravenous Spidernet, which is a proof of purchase skin(is presumed to be something that you will get from the Klei Store).
The following are minor changes or tweaks to the game:
- Certain things that took fuel, that were un-ignitable before can now be set of fire.
- Entities that get unloaded can now keep their target when they get loaded again.
- Fixed a bug that caused medium mushtrees to not get desolation spawned(when just none exist in a large radius)
- Fixed pickable entities getting one extra protected harvest(where they can't wither regardless of temperature).
- Fixed the game saving at a certain point keeping a ride-able beefalo alive when they should be dead.
- Fixed the houndius shootius targeting the player under weird edge cases.
- Fixed the poop flies sometimes making noise when they shouldn't.
- Fixed volt goat herds merging when they shouldn't be able to
-
Fixed the Pig King not starting the wrestling match due sinkholes being right next to the Pig King
- As a side-effect, the Pig King doesn't search for walls(or anything with the "blocker" tag) anymore, so feel free to place them wherever you wan't inside the "previously un-placeable" range
- Fixed the wrestling match sometimes not un-pausing the hounds.
- Fixed frogs being a little quieter than intended sometimes.
- Fixed beavers being able to take knock-back.
- Fixed being able to heal entities when they were dead to duplicate drops.
Summers are now 8.2% darker(before it had a brightness value of 0.7, now its 0.65).
Bee-Boxes got a few more describe strings(depending on how full/empty it is).
The Breezy Vest is now slightly waterproof.
Now for winona's stuff:
We have "Winona's Generator":
Crafted with 1 Trusty Tape, 2 Logs, and 2 Nitre.
This provides power to any structures within a radius of 5 around it.
This takes two Nitre to go from having no fuel to completely fueled.
When fully fueled, this generator is rated for 1 day's usage(each nitre is half a day of rated usage).
We have "Winona's G.E.M.erator":
Crafted with 1 Trusty Tape, 2 Boards, and 2 Electrical Doodads.
This(just like the other generator) provides power to any structures within a radius of 5 around it.
This takes 3 gems to go from no fuel to completely fueled.
When fully fueled this generator is rated for 6 day's usage(each gem is 2 days of rated usage).
Now, for how fuel consumption works for these:
For every connected structure that consumes power the power load is increased by 1
For example, if you had 4 structures that consumed power the power consumption rate would be 4, which would mean you would take the rated usage time and divide it by 4, to determine how long the generator would last.
BUT, something interesting exists, where if a structure is getting powered by multiple generators, each generator splits the cost of running it.
For example, if you had 2 generators running 1 structure that consumed power, the power consumption rate would be 0.5 for each, so each generator would last double its rated usage time.
Lastly, the generators consumption rate can never go below 0.2, which means that if one structure was getting powered by 6 generators, rather than each generator having a consumption rate of 0.1667, they would still have a consumption rate of 0.2.
We have "Winona's Catapult":
Crafted with 1 Trusty Tape, 3 Sticks, and 15 Rocks.
With a max range of 15(radius) and a minimum range of 4.75(radius), doing 42.5 damage per hit, and attacking every 2.5 seconds.
Whenever a catapult is hit, it attempts to target it(if its outside its min range, and inside its max range), but regardless of whether or not it can target it, it share's that target with all the catapults within a radius of 15 around it.
Lastly, it can target anything within its range of 15, as long as one of these things is true:
- The player is targeting that entity
- The entity is targeting the catapult
- The entity is targeting a player
Over the course of a whole day, it will go from 0 to max hp(400).
We have "Winona's Spotlight":
Crafted with 1 Trusty Tap, 2 Gold Nuggets, and 1 Firefly.
It will target somebody within a radius of 12 around it, and will keep a light on them until they leave that radius.
If you want smarter spotlights(that makes multiple spotlights not target the same person) check out this mod by my good friend @Mobbstar Smarter Spotlights
that's all the changes for this update, expect these with every update that klei pushes!
for a more technical overview of this update checkout Game Update 314835, The Modders Change-log!(coming soon)
Previous update: Game Update 304366, The Players Change-log!
As always, if I got anything wrong, or missed something, let me know and I can take another look at the code.
Sorry this took me so long, I'm trying to be more thorough, which means these take longer.
Mobs running into the sea
Can we fix mobs getting stuck into the sea barrier so we actually need to use stuff like boomrangs and darts or teamwork to hurt koalefants and the likes?
I feel their bugged AI removes a big chunk of the game.
A thought for current Winona
Seen diverse opinions about the new character update and having that as basing, here's an idea:
-Only Winona’s Catapult, Spotlight, Generator & G.E.M.erator cost hunger.
-Other things created with her don't suffer this penalty.
With this, we avoid a "nerfing" for the catapults and the posibility of abuse him (aka create 20 or more catapults with no effort in few days), at the same time. We fix the constant issue of having hunger by crafting even the most simplest item (Ropes, Boards, etc).
And finally, this allow a more friendly path to begginers player (who just want make a football helmet and a spear, for now) or experienced ones with not much interest of use exclusively a lot of catapults.
Auto Event is not working
Hey, guys! I have a big, but very strange problem with my DST server.
My server was with auto event at settings, but after reinstalling the windows system and after coping setting my old server to new slots my server become server with winter feast event only. How did it hapeened?
Can I fix it?
Will this game get Shipwrecked Together?
I have a very vague memory of someone from Klei mentioning they wanted to add Shipwrecked into DST. Has anything been said about this? It'd be awesome to sail the seven seas as a monkey with some friends.
Game Not Starting
Whenever I try to launch the game, I get a black screen and the pinwheel loading icon then it instantly crashes. I have tried verifying cache, unsubscribing and deleting all mods, uninstalling and reinstalling and checking for updates and new drivers but nothing has worked.

Question: How do I change day type?
During the creation of my world I set day type to short day, but after playing for a while, the shortened nights really bothered me. Is there a way to change it back to default?
I have tried: TheWorld.topology.overrides.day = "default", in console but it didn't do anything.
Screenshot showcase
A thread like this existed before but I'm afraid it fell deep into the archive, so here is a new one. You can post funny, odd and terrible pictures that you made while playing DST.
Here are some from my collection:
Love this one because it looks like as if the third bunny from the right (not counting the bunny behind the hut) is throwing the small bunny.
My dear Wolfgang managed to trap himself while being sane and of course I mocked him by taking a screenshot and weeks later finding myself trapped in this too while being sane.
Wigfrid is able to fish in carpet. Who would have guessed.
Winona's machine arent bad, they just need to interact more with already exist machine.
Her genrator could refill flingo.
Generator double effect of iceboxes.
Generator increase crafting speed for everyone if it stay near a craft station (any type of craft station)
Lightinng rod could refill her generator.
Light from spotlight will change color base on generator gems.
Caltapus need to refuel with minerals (rock/flints) instead of infinity damage.
