When hallowed nights came out, every character got a unique Halloween skin, each mostly for fun and just for play. However, Maxwell got a skin of Krampus, and since Krampus is half demon, and Maxwell being evil with a number of characters calling him that, along with being called a demon by some, it is pretty easy for a player to turn a blind eye to the subject entirely. With an examination to the story of both, this costume actually holds some symbolism to him all together. In the story, Krampus is the contrast to saint Nicholas (Santa Claus) and would take especially naughty kids back to his lair. In the story of don't starve/Don't starve together, Maxwell tricks the main protagonists into building a portal which traps them in the world of this game. With the various given bits of lore of the series, Maxwell promised each character something, such as Wickerbottom wanting magic, Wendy wanting to bring her sister back from the dead, and Wilson, who desired greater knowledge. What ties this together is that by trusting someone like Maxwell, these characters let their greed and desires get the best of them. This is considered a "naughty" action, and with them being taken to Maxwell's world, or "lair" Maxwell has effectively become a Krampus-like being in and of itself.
