dst_roadmap_2020.png

Hey everybody. Just taking a moment to check-in and update you all with the roadmap for 2020.

Please note that roadmaps are provided to give the community a sense on what we are working on and what is driving our decisions for what we are focusing on in the coming year. None of this is a promise or a guarantee. We always prioritize quality over deadlines and all dates and timelines are estimated to the best of our current ability. Many long time fans will know that we often add new things to these plans which often shifts things around a bit, so it is recommended to avoid scheduling your vacation plans around our dates.

This roadmap is subject to change at any time, but as we have done in the past, if any of this does change significantly we will post new information as we have it.

A quick recap of 2019.

2019 was a fantastic year for DST. We added four new characters to the game and we refreshed three more characters. We also had three substantial content updates with Return of them: Turn of Tides, Salty Dog and Hook Line and Inker. We also saw big updates to our holiday events Hallowed Nights, Winter's Feast and Year of the Carrat. During all of that we hit our highest player concurrency record back in April (during a free weekend) and after that craziness had stabilized we just saw our second highest concurrency last week.

For those of you who aren't super into numbers, what that means is that Don't Starve Together is still growing quite nicely. This is also a clear indicator that our plan of character refreshes, content updates and new characters has been working to help keep a healthy community and continues to keep the game interesting for new and returning players.

On that note, we're still very aware that many people want to see events like The Forge and The Gorge come back. While we are not prepared for that right now, we do understand that this is something many of you are interested in and we are still discussing ways to address this in the future.

ReForged and Re-Gorge-itated are both super good so until we have something new we want to contribute, you should check those out.
Re-Gorge-itated: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1918927570
ReForged: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1938752683

Oh, and not for nothing, we took great strides in console support. We didn't always hit the mark, but most everything we can control directly has been working out quite well over the past year or so. We will continue improving console support as best we can through 2020.

What we're doing in 2020

We're going to continue with generally the same plan as last year. More character refreshes and content. However, at this time we aren't going to commit to a specific number of new characters. While the new characters were very well received and successful in selling well enough to help fund development we also don't want to add new characters just for the sake of it. With that being said we are currently in the process of creating at least one entirely new character for the future and we will have more information about them as we get closer to release.

For our update timeline, we expect that we will have something being launched at least once a month. We don't want to do more updates in a shorter period of time so we can be sure the updates are more substantial and interesting. Depending on how that lines up we may see a couple updates during some months and sometimes we may go a little past a month for the next update, but our goal is that you have something interesting to look forward too at least once a month.

Our first character refresh is a bit of a secret at the moment - but you might be able to guess. You will be seeing more info about that during the first or second week of March. For now, enjoy this small teaser from the update trailer we are working on.

whocoulditbe_BG.png

Lore. Yep. I said Lore.

Something we know everybody wants is more lore. I am not going to say much more for now. But we know you want more lore.  It would be smart from this point on to get back into scrutinizing things we put out for secrets. Not everything, but keep your eyes open. Not this post though. There are no secrets in this post. So scrutinizing this post would probably be a waste of your time. Probably. (But really, there is nothing to find here. You'll know when there is something to be found.)

While Maxwell enjoyed hiding little secrets for you to find and seemed to bask in your attention, Charlie has been quite content to work from the shadows, planning and patiently working to put her pieces into play. Things will become much more apparent as her plans become to take shape and she finally takes center stage.

The other stuff.

We're also going to continue doing other cool new things. We really want to work on Klei Rewards more and streaming items have been really popular so we're thinking of new and interesting things to do with these while continuing to support them throughout the year.

And finally.

We're also aware than some players would like us to make more substantial changes to the overall base game of Don't Starve Together and change things up a bit. While this is not a focus right now, we do understand this is something that is being discussed and I invite you to continue those conversations. Don't Starve Together isn't going away any time soon, so keep it coming.

All of your feedback really helps us figure out where we want to put our resources and it goes a long way in helping us decide which direction to steer the ship. You're all a huge part of the growth of DST and we couldn't have done it without you. Thanks for hanging out with us and sharing your fun stories and interesting ideas. Please keep sending us your thoughts and feedback and we'll keep trying our best to build the world of Don't Starve Together in new and interesting ways.

Have fun out there!

Introducing, Klei Rewards

$

We are introducing a system that will allow players to collect "points" on their accounts by doing various things like subscribing to our Youtube or following us on Twitter and then use those points to get items. Currently we will be using this to distribute our out of cycle Twitch items rather than selling them as we had previously suggested. This allows players to get what they missed before or just get them without going through Twitch.

The first version of this can be found on our accounts page here: https://accounts.klei.com/account/rewards

In the future we will update the rewards program with new ways to earn more points and pick up cool rewards they may have missed, or even possibly entirely new stuff. Let us know what you think!

playing dont starve together alone is way more easier then muti player, for my case i play with 5 friend, in total 6. I found it impossible to survive, i found there isnt enough resource such as food for that much player in the server, so i wonder, is there any server setting such as increase the food amount will make our situation more playable, and what is the ideal world setting for 6 player?

Decorations, Shrines and Base Designs

Hey everyone! My love for designing is thriving and I've been feeling inspired lately and really wanted a place to share some of the things I've been working on. I love making shrines and designs in worlds whether it's big or small, and adding cute little details to them as well. Most of what I do isn't practical and is purely for decoration.

I was originally posting screenshots of my base on this thread:

But I feel as though my style of basing has evolved into something that cannot be categorized as tidy and I wanted to start a different thread that was for bases/worlds more on the ornamental side like mine. Plus I feel far more comfortable and way less anxious being annoying and posting heaps on my own thread than I do spamming someone else's *nervous laugh* ^-^'

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's a few shrines I worked on last month:

Moon Stone Shrine

Don't think I'll ever be able to do the Moon Stone event ever again because I'll never be able to get a pig so perfectly back in that spot like that ahah, worth it.

Klaus Shrine/Arena

We found every Klaus spawner and plugged them with a firepit except this one, now he only ever spawns here and we fight him on the cobble stone bit to the right. This area doubles as a shrine and a fighting arena, I love it ^-^

The builders project

So, we are all probably isolated because of "The end of the world" aka Corona virus. And we all are probably are berried in homework from teachers (this one if you are a student). But also we all have some free time and we all have already done every thing possible to stain sane. Isolation is not good for people, that's why I decided to create this free participate project:

A lot of you love to create, build, in this game. I am sure that you have wonderful perspectives, so this is the challenge: Each weak I will write here a project that you can build, ether on your world without console, or with the "to many items", then after building it post it here as a photo with the areal view mod. Under the photo say if you did it with or without console.

The project is supposed to be fun, so any one wont compare your build with the buildings of others.

If you have any suggestions for a new project for the next weak then writ it down below!

So if you want to participate, then here is your first weak project: Build a pig city / pig hamlet , also give it a name! The dead line will be next Thursday! :wilson_pirate:

How Viable is Beefalo Domestication?

So, I decided on trying to tame beefalos, but looking through tutorials and reading the wiki, It almost seems like it's not worth the time or resources to tame one. Does anybody have any useful tips for domesticating them, or just have any idea for the developers on how to make domestication better if you agree that it's too pricey.

Time Outside the Constant: A Don't Starve Shipwrecked Theory

What started off as a simple investigation into a simple trinket turned into a short theory that I believe is an important first step to solving the entire Don't Starve timeline. For those who want the cut-and-dry point, skip to the "Get to the Point" section. I've been somewhat self-conscious about my inability to properly simplify the stuff I talk about lately, so if after reading this, many of the points still fly over your head, let me know and I'll provide as best a tl;dr as I can in a separate post. Without further ado, let's dive into the evidence.

License Plate

So to start off, let's talk about the license plate trinket; the item that started this investigation.
image.png.bdce3b3cd87caed75c9e4da450060eb8.png

On the surface, a license plate appearing in the Constant isn't all that interesting. Cars and license plates were a thing even before Maxwell got dragged into the Constant in 1906. What's unique about this license plate, however, is what's written on it: AYX-28. This is a huge clue with regard to tracking down where, but most importantly, WHEN the license plate came from; different countries throughout the course of history have had different license plate formats. I looked through a whole bunch of countries' license plates in the 1900s, and I was able to rule out almost all of them. Some countries like Kenya only had license plates that started with a K; some countries like Bolivia have numbers before the letters; other countries like the U.S. and Canada (especially Canada) had just numbers for a good chunk of their history, and in the U.S.'s case, even afterwards, the plates with letters were often inserted in-between the numbers.

The best candidate for "country having an ABC-12 license plate format in the 1900s" that I could find is the United Kingdom. Prior to 1932, the UK license plates were given 1-2 letters to represent the region and a number from 1-9999 to represent the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. issued license plate. For example, A-1 represents the 1st license plate ever issued in the city of London. From 1932 onward, the UK started running out of numbers and decided to add an arbitrary letter to their 1-2 letters, which went on for a few decades. In 1953, they started reversing the letters and numbers, and by 1963, most regions stopped issuing the 1932-style license plates.

The point I'm trying to make with all this information is that this trinket in Don't Starve Shipwrecked is a real-life 1932-style UK license plate. I also managed to track down what the actual region of this license plate is based on the first 2 letters of the license plate: it's a county called Leicestershire located in the dead center of England. While I've yet to uncover the relevance of this location to the Don't Starve world, I think it should be pretty clear what's so confusing about this revelation: what's a license plate CREATED roughly around 1932 (let alone the many years it must have taken to be attached onto a car, used by the person who owns that car, detached from said car through some kind of accident, and made its way into the archipelago that is Don't Starve Shipwrecked) doing in a DLC that many people believe shouldn't have taken place much longer after 1921?

Orange Soda

To make sure that this wasn't just a one-off case of presumed anachronism from Klei, I decided to investigate some of the other trinkets in Shipwrecked, notably the Orange Soda.

image.png.1765789ec8f6c197a39b057b2e5d3a1c.png

Turns out the "anachronism" was surprisingly consistent. From my research, sodas weren't canned until 1940; before then, they were enjoyed in bottles. However, canned sodas in the 1940s were one of those cone-top cans which look like this.
image.png.5fdfc4c0e032e8499071a3baef13d85f.png

You can clearly see from the picture of the orange soda that it's a generic aluminum can with an opening tab, NOT a tin cone-top soda can. What type of opening tab this is, I can't say for sure just from looking; it could be a pull tab or a stay tab. The pull tab was invented in 1959 and marketed in 1962; the aluminum can was invented in 1957 and marketed in 1959. The stay tab, on the other hand, was invented a decade later in the 1970s.

For those of you who are as skeptical of appearance-based evidence as I am, look no further than Wagstaff's quote on this trinket.
image.png.4d5ae17e287927ee4ebb8496a5c669d4.png

Wagstaff confirms that there's a unique "opening device" on the soda can that he's never seen before. As someone who is confirmed to have been dragged into the Constant in 1919 during the Voxola factory incident 4 literal decades before the earliest tab's invention, it only makes sense that he's never seen a pull/stay tab before. Additionally, it also makes sense as to why he would assume that this was a tin can instead of an aluminum can; tin cans were mass-produced in the U.S. in 1901 while aluminum cans, as we discussed earlier, were invented in 1957.

Broken AAC Device

Another anachronistic trinket I noticed was the broken AAC device. For those who aren't aware, AAC stands for "Augmentative and Alternative Communication"; they're basically tools for the speech-impaired. AAC devices can either be non-electronic or electronic, and it should go without saying that based on the character quotes from Wagstaff/WX-78 regarding a made-up DR356X001 component and the physical appearance that this is undoubtedly an electronic AAC device.
image.png.66907f271ffff94f2857f2838ca7a432.png

More specifically, this looks like a dynamic AAC device (i.e. a touchscreen device that changes what's on the screen when you touch something on that screen).
image.png.ed47d4d2cb98ef5b3dbdff5481351db9.png

As you can probably predict, this device was made many decades after Wilson's capture; the first of these dynamic AAC devices was made in the 1990s.

Get to the Point

Don't Starve Shipwrecked has occasionally been viewed as an uninteresting DLC from a lore perspective. However, what I've just shown here suggests otherwise. The 1932-style English license plate, orange aluminum soda can, and dynamic-display AAC device together reveal the uncomfortable truth that as of the events of Shipwrecked, decades have passed in the outside world to the point where the MINIMUM decade outside the Constant is the 1990s. The fact that Klei was consistent enough to show not 1, but 3 "futuristic" real-world inventions making their way into the Constant suggests that this "anachronism" was intentional and not anachronistic at all.

Looking Ahead

If it is absolutely true that many decades have already passed in the outside world during Shipwrecked, which canonically occurs prior to Adventure Mode, this information can be used to solve a plethora of other mysteries and possibly the Don't Starve timeline itself. For those who don't know what I'm talking about when I mention the "Don't Starve timeline", I'm referring to this specific post from Kevin Forbes many years ago.

One particular issue I was looking into was how time flows inside the Constant relative to the outside world. I've done quite a bit of research to solve this question, and I do have a few ideas. Unfortunately, I've yet to come up with a conclusive argument explaining the flow of time and/or the perception of said flow of time within the Constant. If anyone wants to know what information I've found that may be relevant to solving this mystery, the links will be below in a separate Source list. One thing I can say for certain though is that contrary to what many, myself included, have suggested, evidence suggests that the flow of time within the Constant actually is abnormal and cannot be explained by "we're on a different planet".

If you made it to the end of this essay, thanks for reading. For those who've miraculously digested everything I mentioned, I only have one last thing to say.

Rest in Peace, Maman Angeline.

Abigail's Demise: A DST Lore Analysis

$
0
0

Obviously, there is quite a lot of lore to unpack from the recent Wendy short. I'm still doing research to figure out what happened afterwards, but I think I've nailed down Abigail's death and what happened prior to what we see in the short. As with my previous threads, I'll present the pieces of the puzzle and then put them together at the end; feel free to skip whichever sections don't interest you, but keep in mind that some of the points I bring up at the end might make no sense without that context.

For anyone who hasn't watched the Wendy short yet, please take a few minutes to watch the whole thing. Aside from just being an emotional rollercoaster of an animation, it has a couple of details that are important for this theory.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ozRwX35fHE

The William Carter Puzzles

So as with most lore puzzles, you have to make sure the old matches the new. So I decided to go back to the old William Carter puzzles from 2013, the same puzzles that established a connection between Wendy and Maxwell.

So, just really briefly for those who aren't caught up in the lore, in the 3rd puzzle, you can see a post card from Jack Carter referencing his mother who "hasn't met the twins yet". Many have already pointed out that this is in reference to Wendy and Abigail, and both this puzzle and the short show that Jack Carter is Wendy and Abigail's caretaker and possibly father.

However, what the 3rd puzzle also tells us is that Jack dislikes the urban setting: "the city was too much for me, so I've gone west - It really is amazing out here - maybe you could visit sometime?" This sentiment is consistent with the setting we see in the Wendy short; an isolated abode on top of a cliff.

image.png.ddbc46a31991074800bc034d3f8feb8b.png

In the 4th puzzle, however, we see a reply from William (Maxwell's real name for those who aren't aware) after the mysterious train crash that started William's descent into madness. The thing to note here is the address on the right of the letter: Jack Carter, 33, 4th St, Corona, CA 91720. What this tells us is that Jack Carter and his family lived in the city of Corona, CA within the Riverside County at the time of the incident. Keep this address in mind because it is the single most important piece of evidence in this theory.

 image.thumb.png.c7e2dc83e5793312829a24db0e9e6e6b.png

The Wendy Short

For those who didn't notice, during the scene where Abigail trips and falls over the cliff (safely into a bush), you can hear the sound of a car tire screeching as Abigail falls in slow motion.

image.thumb.png.17b251472bff58760af212202c7b3b4e.png

Another thing to note is the setting itself. As I previously pointed out, it's in an isolated rural setting which is consistent with Jack Carter's disdain for the urban setting from the 3rd puzzle. However, what's also worth pointing out is the background. The house is situated on a cliff overseeing a large body of water with a likewise large island in the distance.

image.thumb.png.3659139358ea372cc5e7b61beccb6afb.png

image.thumb.png.769d8df8a2dd71b95d6c5008735eeafe.png

With the addition of the Wendy short came a Klei announcement where a snapshot of Wendy's belongings (not unlike the William Carter puzzles) was shared. While there are a ton of noteworthy things in this picture, the main one I want to focus on is the date presented in Wendy's diary: April 16th, 1914.

image.thumb.png.64e7ef7f57b18a32efa54029583967a9.png

Real-World Research and Analysis

So with all of the game info on the table, I started off by looking at the address; not just the city, but the actual address. For those who aren't aware, the ZIP code is basically a mailing address for your local post office, but the code is also tied to the delivery routes from the post office. Because those routes can move around, the ZIP code can change as well. I bring this up because the address in the 3rd puzzle technically does not exist with the given ZIP code. HOWEVER, it does exist with a different ZIP code. I feel like whoever made the William Carter puzzles was absolutely aware of this because within the same postcard in the 3rd William Carter puzzle, Jack says, "The post is dreadfully inconsistent out here".

Anyways, the picture below shows the location of Corona, California. It's a city located in Southern California, southeast of Los Angeles.

image.thumb.png.52cc55e48402fba35654160606f36400.png

Here is the city of Corona itself.

image.thumb.png.07128e3f534a9e87d67d8d14b45a375a.png

Finally, here is the actual present-day location of Jack Carter's residence at the time of the train incident in the 4th puzzle.

image.thumb.png.a279cc0a853447a49e810dd404faa7b6.png

I will come back to this in just a bit. For now, let me provide a brief summary of the relevant parts of Corona's history. This is why I said earlier that the only thing from the Wendy snapshot that I wanted to focus on was the date: April 16th, 1914. While the specific date seems irrelevant, the TIME FRAME that the date fits within seems interesting.

Corona was actually called South Riverside before 1896; it was renamed Corona after the Grand Boulevard was built. The Grand Boulevard is a beltway (i.e. a road or series of roads that go in a circle) well-known for being almost perfectly circular. The Grand Boulevard is the EXACT SAME circular road that you see on the map right above this paragraph. At some point after this road was built, the city wanted the whole world to know who they were, so they hosted international car races using the Grand Boulevard. They ended up hosting 3 races, with one on September 9th, 1913; another on November 26th, 1914; and the last one on April 8th, 1916. While extremely popular, these races were a nuisance to many nearby residents who disliked the fans who left trash on their yard, not to mention the car noises. A vague, minor accident supposedly occurred during the 1st race, but a major accident occurred during the 3rd race that took the life of one of the drivers, his mechanic, and a security guard while injuring 5 spectators, resulting in the termination of all future Corona Road Races.

As you can see, April 16th, 1914 fits within the races' time frame, specifically after the 1st race and before the 2nd. Clearly, these road races are involved in Abigail's death, and if you put all of this information in context, it explains why Klei decided to choose something as "random" as a car sound effect during a serious supposedly-life-threatening moment in the animated short.

All of this also explains why Jack and Wendy are living on a cliff in the middle of nowhere; they are no longer in Corona, and both of them have every reason to not be in Corona. You can see from the map above that there is absolutely no large body of water within the vicinity, so we know for sure that wherever Jack and Wendy are in the animated short, it isn't 33 4th St. This brings me back to one of the first pieces of info that I brought up in this thread, which was the setting. It's clear that the house is situated on a cliff, but judging by the flora in the area and the large islands that are unusually close to the coast, I think it's very likely that the body of water in the animated short is a lake. I used the satellite option on Google maps to look at some of the lakes in and near Corona based on the criteria that there has to be islands in the lake AND that the lake has to be large enough for you to see the horizon. The best candidate I could find was Lake Mathews.

image.thumb.png.dbac0669a65af8968a19757f17b931d3.png

So to reiterate:
1) Abigail's death is tied to the Corona road race of 1913. I suspect it's an indirect cause, however, since the real-life deaths and major injuries took place in the 3rd race, not the 1st
2) The timing of Wendy's diary entry makes sense if this is true, being only 7 months after the road race
3) This theory is consistent with what little we know about Jack Carter's personal views
4) This theory explains the random car sound effect in the animated short AND the relevance of the date in Wendy's diary
5) Jack Carter's Corona, CA address being located within the Grand Boulevard circle of all places isn't much of a coincidence anymore

So, with all of the information and analysis out of the way, this is my interpretation of Abigail's tragedy based on the info I covered in this thread. Jack Carter, a man who enjoys the simple quiet life out in the countryside, decided to move West and eventually settle down in Corona, California with his twin daughters to get away from the bustling noisy city of New York. Unfortunately, he chose one of the worst possible countryside spots to live in, not knowing that the automobile craze would be exceptionally popular within the Grand Boulevard beltway; the same beltway that he's smack-dab in the middle of. 7 years pass after the 1906 San Francisco "Earthquake" that took William and Charlie from our world. Jack is getting a bit annoyed with all the car noises going on in the neighborhood and all the car fanatics leaving trash on his yard; it kind of reminds him of the urban hell hole of New York. One of his daughters, Abigail, on the other hand, feels the complete opposite. Some time within the period of the big Corona road race spectacle, Abigail, being the happy-go-lucky, carefree child she is, decided to play with Wendy on the Grand Boulevard belt line much like how she played around with the edge of the cliff. Unlike that cliff, however, there was nothing to protect her from a rush of automobile fans in their death machines coming from outside the city. Seeing what the city has done to his family, Jack decided to leave Corona behind and settle for a lake house.

Also, sorry for the bad title; the joke was probably too soon, but hopefully all of you are doing okay. Wash your hands with soap, especially under the nails.

It's 9 in the morning, and I don't have the processing power right now to come up with a better title nor the will to prolong this since the last time I prolonged a large thread, all the pictures got corrupted.

Anyways, that's all I got. Let me know if there's any information that I missed or any information already covered that could viably be interpreted in another way.

Do you know any game mechanic that could not be very popular, you use for your advantage and could let us know?

For example: If you feed a pig x4 monster meat and kill it, you get 2x meat and 1x pig skin; two out of three ingredients to prototype hambat, also, you can repeat the process to get pig skin without destroying pig houses.

Hello, another thread.

So most objects in-game have a single model shared by all. Bolders and trees are a good example.

There are some objects however which have multiple sprites. I'm talking about driftwood and berry bushes.

And I was just curious what are your opinions on this. Do you want more variety in objects' models or not.

Wolfgang rework from scrapped Wendy's rework?

Scrapped Wendy idea- the lower her health the more damage Abigail does.

Take that and stick it onto Wolfgang. The lower his health the more he fights for his survival.

Remove might from food. Hunger low- wimpy. Hunger normal- normal. Hunger full- still normal. That's his downside.

Mighty only when hp low.

Differentiate Wolfgang as a glass canon and Wigfrid as a tank.

[Discussion] Wickerbottom Rework Ideas Thread

Though personally I am not the best person to discuss, I've decided to start this thread such that other people can discuss Wicker's probable rework.

Before anything else I'll list some of the rework ideas I've found commonly discussed when it comes to Wickerbottom:

 - Nerf her book costs as they're ridiculously easy to get

 - Nerf her book-reading capability to prevent her from reading books while out of sanity (I think this nerf should expand to the rest of sanity-draining magic items too tbf)

 - Expand upon her elderly side by granting her downsides befitting an elderly person

I personally think Wicker should have a specific character-based item (think of Mourning Glory) which can only be acquired by performing  a specific set of actions, required to craft her books.

What about you guys? What are your thoughts regarding this matter?
